Is axe DPS possible?
If you look at the skills from axe you will notice they are more condition oriented and off hands are usually condition oriented as well except axe off hand and horn.
Imo axe is the worst direct damage weapon rangers have unless you happen to fight 2 enemies at once all the time, then it becomes “average” at most.

lol what? If you look at the axe skills the ONLY condition oriented skill is the #2, so idk what skills you’re looking at…
@OP the axe is absolutely a good direct damage weapon, it’s really good for crit builds due to the +10% crit damage trait while you have a mainhand axe equipped, it’s actually quite powerful, not to mention if you hit an enemy that’s standing near one other enemy or near a wall/pillar/tree the axe can bounce off of you deal double damage with your 1 skill.

Axe is so powerful for direct damage that it does the least damage among all weapons, that defines itself how strong it is. It has 3 skills, one is condition damage based, one is a chill and the other one is autoattack. I didn’t say they were MOSTLY conditions.
Even if you happen to hit twice your main target with the bounces which won’t happen that often it will still deal low damage and give you less utility than other weapons.
It also depends on the traits you use but you really have to love axe in order to give it any real use with a direct damage build.

actually, when it double strikes it does significantly more damage than all of our other weapons auto attacks, and less utility? Yeah, ok, not like we have 30% uptime on chill from our 3 skill alone (chill makes it so enemy runs 66% slower and their skills take 66% longer to recharge), and then i believe it’s 100% or nearly 100% uptime on weakness, which has a 50% chance to make them deal 50% less.
It has plenty of damage, and as i said, you want to use it more for crit builds than raw power builds.

Well, when hitting 2 targets yeah it might actually do more damage (on the main target only), but that’s quite unlikely to happen since usually it’s a single target or 3 which rarely makes it bounce back to your main target.
I like axe but it really needs a certain build to “shine”. The chill is decent but in PvE it hardly matters, as for PvP it’s nice but i prefer other skills, it’s a matter of taste.
It depends on the traits, gear and what you want the build for…axe is not ideal for everything.

Forgive me but where is this weakness on the Axe?
@OP Axe works just fine in a power/crit build. It’s bad for single target but as a kiting/utility weapon for groups and to balance out your sword it’s fine.
I’d suggest considering Shortbow instead (though it’s single target and not AoE) since either you need 2 separate offhands or you suffer from joint CDs on your weapon sets. Torch isn’t good for a power build. Horn is fine though with the change coming to SotH (25% move YAY!) horn will lose some of its ommph and that leaves dagger.
Weakness comes from Winter’s Bite on pet next attack.
I utilize it as a mini AoE when I’m waiting on my main AoE and the situation calls for it. Plus you can use birds which auto attack, and you can then toss Axe into the fray.
Or, when you need to hit two Dolyaks, making sure you get full Karma… Situational.
Or, running into a keep that’s being attacked.. so I can hit more than one attacker while speeding in…. That sorta thing.
It has its uses. Now, I wouldn’t go PvE’n with an axe, generally speaking.

Crit/Conds builds work really well with Axe/Torch Combo, with the right sigils + you want the weapon swap bonuses, you will hit allot harder with a Crit build then wasting 30 points into power.
Axe/Torch, Sword/Horn make a nasty combo for SPvP and WvW. I recommend using Crit/Conds build and use QZ+SS combo with your Sword/Horn.

I always forget that some attacks do things for the pet. Mostly because it only shows up in the text and because pets are unreliable so I just consider it a bonus and not a selling point.
Thank you for pointing it out. I can’t believe I used an Axe for 300+ hours on my ranger and didn’t know that… :-/
Axe DPS is kinda weak, even with a straight power/precision build with the 10% crit.
Axe is by far my favorite pvp weapon. I love hitting thieves with it after bouncing it off someone else. Mesmsers with illusions/ phantasms/decoy spam + stealth, It completely ruins their day.
I never understand the obsession with torch off hand tho, I prefer axe/ axe, it wont do much against smart players (or so I’ve heard), but I’ve come across plenty of not so smart players.

Offhand axe is amazing against the many ranger, rifle warrior, and shortbow thief babbies who prior to fighting you did not even know that rangers could wield an axe in the off-hand.
Other than that it’s pretty lackluster, and I can definately understand why people prefer the warhorn or the torch over it.

It can reflect a thieves dagger storm and as such end up causing their elite to turn into a death sentence lol!
Ah… i remember when they’d reflect endlessly until someone ran out first… then the thief would implode eating his entire elite (amplified slightly each time the projectile was reflected) all at once, good times….good times…

Whirling Defense is essentially Dagger Storm’s kitten little brother. The difference in cooldown hardly justify the fact that Dagger Storm is ten times better.
1) It allows the caster to move while channeling;
2) It gives the caster stability
3) It lasts several seconds longer
4) It throws a chickenload of daggers which cripple and bleed
5) The daggers actually bounce when hitting a target, essentially making each dagger hit two targets
Absolutely absurd.

Well the fact that dagger storm is ALSO an elite skill where as off hand axe is just a weapon skill also factors in lol… and if you reflect a projectile that pierces/bounces/etc it still does that, so if you reflect a dagger storm into a group of enemies you’re going to be essentialy turning that thieves elite onto his team mates..
Once again, dagger storm is an ELITE off hand axe is just a weapon skill, which are supposed to be weaker than utility and elite skills… so yeah…

Weaker, aye. But the difference in power between the two skills is just absurd. There are plenty of elite skills out there which are arguably weaker than some utility skills or even weapon skills.

Such as? because i haven’t seen a single elite skill that’s weaker than a utility/weapon skill, keep in mind i’m talking about in the situation the skill is good, i mean, using tornado for a support skill vs spirit of stone would just be stupidly biased towards the spirit.

Main hand axe definitely has it’s uses. Treating it like a mini-AOE seems to work very well. It’s clearly at its best with multiple enemies around.
Both main and offhand haxe benefit greatly from having combo fields around. It’s a great weapon for use with the trap fields or for cranking up regen with healing spring.
If I go to run an axe, I’ll probably run Axe/Horn and GS, or Sword/Axe and Axe/Horn. In both cases the axe is a skirmishing weapon for opening the fight or backing out of it. With GS it’s mostly a way to use the horn, since the GS has the long gap-closer.
Could also use Axe/Hord and a bow if you’re adverse to melee combat.
