I’m not expert in the game, not even close, but that is what I see –
I have a ranger lvl 55, deals 170 damage per attack with the long bow, and around 100 with the short bow, and I also have a necromancer lvl 40 that deals around 400 per autoattack and he is having more critical chance (don’t know where to check exact numbers, but he has around twice as many crits as the ranger) which deal 800 damage – why is the ranger so weak?

it depends on the stats on your gear as well as what area of the world you’re in. some maps are lower level and restrict your damage. some armor stats allow you to deal more damage than others while some armor sets allow you to tank more damage than others.

they’re only constant if you’re testing your damage on the same mob in the same map wearing the same armor

they’re only constant if you’re testing your damage on the same mob in the same map wearing the same armor

I meant, they are constant because I have changed armor and bows and lvled up to lvl 55 obviously in different places, and the damage never have been in any situation even remotely close to what the necromancer have in all times.

Ranger is not to weak if using other weapon with swap with bow. This is where many have problem. They think stay at range and shoot bow. Because it seem safe. This is why I do not suggest new player play ranger. They get bad habit to have pet tank and stand away and shoot bow. They do not learn to do melee combat which is where higher damage number are. The name of ranger does not always mean have to shoot bow from range. Instead it is different.

ANet doesn’t balance the professions skill by skill or weapon by weapon. Sometimes, a strong auto-attack will mean something else is weaker or a weak auto-attack will mean something else is stronger. You want to compare the overall impact, not any small piece of it.

Also remember that ranger longbow damage varies by distance. If you’re using it in melee range, you’ll get weak auto-attacks.

Long Range Shot:
Damage Damage if range is greater than 1000: 317 (0.9)?
Damage Damage if range is between 500-1000: 263 (0.8)?
Damage Damage if range is less than 500: 211 (0.7)?
Combo Combo Finisher: Physical Projectile (20% chance)
Range.png Range: 1,500

You’ve also got to look at rate of fire. Shortbow damage numbers appear lower, but it fires faster and there is additional damage coming from bleeds if hitting the target from behind or the side.

And this just irks me so much. The bow damage should be at it’s highest the closer you are to the target as it will have the highest energy at release.

I love my ranger. Set up right at max range, a longbow ranger can melt things.

A Condi Necro and melt people faster.

Ranger damage is tuned to accommodate having a pet with you 100% of the time. If you look at the ranger’s weapon skill damage in a vacuum, it’s going to be lower across the board than every other profession. This is generally the case with pet based professions in pretty much every MMO ever.

Those armadillos would be a lot cooler if they looked more like real armadillos. mmm armadillos

Ranger damage is tuned to accommodate having a pet with you 100% of the time. If you look at the ranger’s weapon skill damage in a vacuum, it’s going to be lower across the board than every other profession. This is generally the case with pet based professions in pretty much every MMO ever.

Unfortunately (and likely due to their fear of bots) the pets are nearly never taken to account when they design encounter numerous one will wipe the pet with little or no way of preventing this. I recall someone stating that they (Anet) could not design content around one profession and yet they somehow missed how much reflection trivialized the at launch content (and much of the added as well).

The pet system feels like a rush job and one that no one in the company wants to tackle as it is most likely viewed as a waste of resources.

Pets have been hidden due to rising Player complaints.

It’ s the most unbalanced profession in this game.
if i were in you i would play a different profession and enjoy the game since ranger is not viable at all

The easiest to play – the most difficult to master.
And even if you put 5 times the effort into your play – ele will just right-click the mouse to outDPS you.

If you want efficiency – this class is not for you. If you want challenge – that is the only reason to play this class.
For challenging content you never needed 50 bucks to buy HoT.
You just needed a Ranger.

But I guess one could say it is quite important, the glassier your longbow build is, the more important it is to always have proper positioning/movement between you/pet and your targets, as your skillset alone wont save you. If you misuse LB #3 and #4 (and they can sometimes be a bit buggy) you’re more likely sc#&4ed. Again, from a PvP perspective of course.

That’s just my definition of “skill-cap”.
Rangers do not possess the vast store of mechanics as any other class of choice. Our abilities are complex with no real set of combinations. Which makes us the easiest to play.

But without the mechanics – you need to catch up to other classes with sheer awareness, timing and positioning (and your reposition mechanics can be harmful to you). That is what is the most difficult about Ranger.
Being able to compete with other loaded-with-mechanics classes without having any yourself. Warriors’ abilities are all better-supporting than Rangers’ and are reliable.
