Lack of Pet?
Are you complaining from a cosmetic standpoint only here? Because I think think as far as abilities go, it’s fine… We have it pretty good compared to other classes F abilites.
I only ask because your “smoke and mirrors” comment. They aren’t going to give us a unique ability for every single pet.. That would be out of hand.. If that comment was aimed at pet skins, well then you’re just spoiled.

I haven’t found this to be a real problem. That being said, my ranger is still relatively new, and I find I don’t need anything but my bear to get me through thick and thin. haha.
Anyone else feel like there is a lack of pets. Sure there appears to be a great amount, but its really just all smoke and mirrors. When it comes down to it.. theres really only 9 land pets, and 3 water pets.
12 pets to choose from in a 2012 game.. come on now. thats super nintendo status…
Not sure if serious…. each pet has their own little twist due to their F2, so you need to put that in there too… like a fern hound is quite a bit more supportive then a Hyena… and according to you that’s only 1 pet

I do feel like they could have had more pets in terms of looks but the one thing i hate is the one pet i wanted the marsh drake looks nothing like its picture its just a green pudgy thing wheres the one in the picture!?
I have no complaints here. In other games the selection is basically the same or in a lot of cases, worse. (I’m looking at you, WoW, with your only THREE pets when it comes down to it)
I have at least one pet that I can ideally use in any given situation that it suits best.
My only (tiny) gripe is the number of “pig” based pets. They all have identical stats and the same “forage” special skill…which is pretty much completely useless in a fight.

Actually, the pig pets each have a different forage. That is, each has a specific set of 2-3 items they choose from, completely exclusive to the species. I don’t remember which one has what off the top of my head, but you can test it in game if you’re curious.
Yes, the Pigs seem lazy. If they all had different F2 abilities, their inclusion would feel more justified. Who cares if they all forage different things? Most Ranger players do not seem to like Forage as a concept even, so give us better variety (eg Pigs get all forage options, then the others get all-new F2 options).
I am personally horrified by the lack of Raptor pets. Seriously, how was this not blindingly obvious? Who does not want a Raptor pet? It would be sweet!
In terms of what we do have, however, I feel there is a good selection. I do think some pet families need further differentiation (eg birds at the moment just feel like weak felines), but largely it seems a good selection. Once you have a family you like, there are then dramatic variations within from the F2. I love the Fern Hound. It has all the juicy all-roundedness of the canine, but with better survivability.
I wouldn’t mind seeing the addition of a hoofed pet like a Ram, Stag, Dolyak etc.. or even some non-combat pets that are fully supportive but don’t actually attack
I like how each Forage is split up into a group of 3 items that share similar functions. That makes the result randomized but still somewhat predictable.
I think the flow of picking an item off the ground is a bit awkward generally speaking and working with pets in specific. In general, because you can’t just buzz by something and pluck something off the ground in one smooth single motion, you have to pause for a moment to bend down and pick it up. In specific, because mid battle porcine item usage ultimately requires a choice between bringing the pet to me and pausing it from it’s DPS/Psuedo-tanking, or endangering myself to go get it. It’s pretty incidental in open world PvE, but in Dungeon scenarios I rarely ever want to do either of those things.
I kind of wish during the cooldown of Forage, you could press F2 again and have your pet throw you any environmental weapon near it. That way you not only get to have your forage’d item conveniently delivered to you, you’ve also got a free mobile environmental weapon snatcher.

Am i missing something? i count like 45 pets?
Got no complaints here. True, we only have a few pet families, but we have a great variety of actual pets. The F2 ability is really what sets them apart. Not all Moas are created equal. One chills, one gives the party fury, one…you get the idea. Learn to use them all and you’ll realize they each have a niche.

@Vox Hollow, that… would be amazing!! I’d love it if i could get Sir Oinks A Lot to throw me environmental weapons!! It’d be so boss!! As for the forage thing, personally i think it’s fine, i either will dodge in and grab it, or i’ll call him back to me so i can grab it.
On a side note, your allies can pick up the forged items, so in a structured group you can dig something up and have an ally use it for you, same effect faster, that and it also allows you to be super supporty with the pig, he digs up stuff that heals the user/makes them invuln so you can leave them there and let very injured allies pick em up and get healed up and continue fighting!!

Looks like Durzlla & I are on the porcine bandwagon. 2 threads in a row supporting them! Yea, in a dungeon or DE have a pig dig up a health regen or elixir of heroes and let your melee “tank” use it.

Yeah i tend to let the gaurdian in my group of friends use it since he has only melee weapons and needs all the help he can get in some fights!
