My Ranger is nearing level 80 so it’s time to put some thought into her gear choices. I’ve been running a 0/20/X/0/30 build focused around my cat pets (without totally neglecting my own damage) and I’m loving it. While I like Greatsword and Shortbow the most, the silly synergy between Axe/Warhorn and Rampage as One is too good to pass up most of the time in PvE.
Anyway, would Precision/Toughness/Condition Damage armor and weapons make the most sense? I had someone recommend Power/Toughness/Healing Power but it seems like I might be a bit too dependent on my pet if I took that route. And what about runes? If I want to be really really cheap, could I get away with a full suit of Grenth karma armor?
I plan on doing a fair bit of WvW roaming with the character but I want to keep my options open as I dabble in a bit of everything.

Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
For WvW roaming you can go for a combination of rabid, carrion and soldier armor. But you need to change your build. While you could do good in 5vs5 fights you will do bad in zerg fights because your pet will die in an instant. If it’s a good zerg that is. And if you attack it’s core. And if you have no pet your damage output will drop considerably. You could switch to traps. I’ve been playing a trapper for quite some time now and people actually pick me for their parties.. Atm I have combination of carrion, rabid, rampager and berserker armor but I will switch the berserker soon. It’s very bad for WvW. For anything actually.

Theorize and tweak to your heart’s content before you spend any gold/karma/badges/etc.
Personally for WvW I like a solid health pool of vitality and toughness. Throw in Healing Power you can find your Happy Spot on the survivability vs damage scale.
In a zerg, consider changing your pet to a ranged pet (spider/devourer). Just a thought.
Melee pets can die quickly if not managed and swapped quickly.

Hmm, ok. So it seems like I should shoot for some defensive stats. Does the Ranger do better with Power, Precision, or Condition Damage as their primary damage stat, though? I know you can run any of them but I’ve heard conflicting things about which seems to work best in practical situations.
Also, the Rune sets I’m looking at are:
Grenth (free with the karma armor)
Thief (good if I were to go 0/30/10/0/30 and focus on flanking)
Hoelbrak (really good for my Rampage as One setup)
Which of these make the most sense? I’m sure there are better runes but I’m on a budget.
