How would you have approached this scenario different?

If you had moved in and secured the kill after the first down, you probably could have avoided the rest of that encounter. All it took was Viper’s Nest! (Or just stomping them.)

Haha. Yeah, can’t believe you went for the NPC the first time the dude was down. Was it intentional or did you switch target by mistake without noticing?

Send in pet, come in behind pet, start finish move.

Someone told me that during a sPvP game when I failed to finish them. At first I thought maybe they started to trash talk but then they came back and provided some good tips

Doesn’t work on Rangers because our downed #2 is an AoE stun not a single target directional like Warriors or Engineers.

Still, you could stealth stomp no problem, just make sure to pet swap just as you are about to finish the stomp otherwise they can use the stun on your pet and hit you even in stealth. Pet swapping breaks their target thus avoiding the stun, unless they have autotarget on. Or in this case you could send your pet to attack another nearby target, again to avoid them using the stun on it in order to hit you.

I do regret not getting first stomp. I had stealth available. I compromised for scout for whatever reason. I’ve had several upsets recently when going for stomps that it makes me cautious. A downed ranger shouldn’t cause this unless they packing wolf on swap :-(

Well, as long as you had fun, that is all that matters. Or at least that is how I play when something similar happens to me.

In both cases you could have stomped him quiet easily. You have half the tools, stealth and fear (no stab).

If you want to kill a guy in camp, you have first to be way more offensive. Don’t pay attention to the NPCs and don’t forget they give you retaliation. In both cases you uselessly used SoS, all too soon. You should have kept it for the stomp i guess, same for the wolf, go in the camp, pew pew him, use stealh to approach and switch pet while stomping to keep fear if you need it. You should have taken RAO too the second time.
