i’ve seem some odd claims: such as instantly one-shotting anyone from 1,500 meters, no chance of survival, and even one-shotting bunker guardians(in what scenario can a bunker guardian die?), but choosing a ranger over a warrior in pvp due to effectiveness? that’s just absurd.
shoutbow is a better longbow ranger than any ranger. it doesn’t melt in ¼ of a second, it brings significantly more personal and party utility, and its melee is actually dangerous enough to cause people to run away.

Forget about logic and go and actually try it in real pvp and you will understand.

I love when I run into rangers running something terrible like that in PvP, especially when I’m playing condi anything.

Time for a change.
Can you run a twitch stream and post a video of your ranger “eating up the cheese”?

You havent even tried the build and you are already drawing these conclusions…
These thieves run when they get hit 1 or 2 arrows its not a big deal they only counter you if you are far away from you’re allies so they can keep dodging until you run out of cooldowns. The rock dog will protect you from their initial hit too.
Teamplay is the key here when players are busy fighting you’re team it usually just take 1 rapid fire to finish them off.

Glassbow puts up a very good fight against d/p thief.
I was duelling a very good one in the obsidian sanctum and beat him most of the time. But I wasn’t running full glass the entire time, I ended up going into WS and nature magic.

“The LB build I’m running now is super cheesy. Like the p/d thief of ranger builds, only it beats p/d thieves pretty easily. I’ve played ranger since launch and I think its probably the strongest/easiest 1v1 spec I’ve ever played.”
Cheese Cheese Cheese. Like the OP said. Y’all talk a different talk to each other and deny it.

^Glassbow is a 1v1 build
I think literally every profession has a 1v1 build that can beat or be on equal terms with a longbow. I guess if you’re bad you might have difficulty, after all how can I deal with a rapid fire when my ele only has 9k health and no defensive cds?
“gasp” a gimmick build is good at the one thing its designed to do? OH NO. How bout this. FEEL FREE TO NERF IT. The second you make it so that we dont have to sacrifice 6 trait points to have the weapon be even slightly useful in wvw or PvP.
Edit: Bloody hell ill take a 10% dmg nerf across the board on every skill if read the wind becomes baseline.

It’s a little OP in 1v1’s fought in the middleground area of forest of niflhel because of the limited LOS options, sure. It’s still far from unbeatable there, however. In real PvP scenarios there’s usually plenty of LOS opportunities so it loses it’s edge and dies to a LOT of things 1v1. It also blows up in seconds when focused down by 2+ decent players.
As for the main point, I honestly don’t believe longbow is OP. It’s cheesy when used in lower tiers of play, but it’s skill ceiling is certainly no lower than the skill ceiling of other classes. That said, I wouldn’t at all mind if they nerfed the damage, as long as they give rangers other decent burst options as those are really lacking atm.

Absolutely agree with this, that would open up so many build options for us.

We don’t “have” to. You can easily pair the lb and gs into a 06260 build for pvp and the weapon will still be viable. It obviously plays different, but that’s irrelevant.
Not that I would mind if RtW becomes baseline in exchange for a damage reduction.

Much like the cheese a turret engineer can bring on the Temple of the Silent Storm map, no? How many of those boys do you see jumping into the fire and strategically placing their turrets?
Every class has something. We have all already stated it several times. It was broke, now fixed. There are plenty, more than enough, ways to counter the LB Ranger. At this point if you actually die one or two things happened.
1. You didn’t have good situation or map awareness
2. You just lost to a better player
Just because you had to respawn doesn’t mean the class that killed you is running a cheesy build or needs a nerf. We really have to get past this way of thinking.
Johnny Johnny – Ranger (Ehmry Bay)

I play a ranger and i must say i do agree on how broken rangers are. Fact that you need to waste both your dodges to not get nuked fully is bad enough and I honestly doubt both your dodges will charge up as fast as the CD on rapid fire. And the fact that the range is 1500…which btw i was testing around i honestly thing its further then 1500 range.
Next is the 25 stacks of invul within 3 sec, this is beyond absurd that is an instant 25% dmg increase.
Lastly Sic Em…well i think its pretty self explanatory…
People use to complain how disgusting shatter mesmers were well it requires alot more then pressing one button to deal what rangers can do now, then there is the necro press 1 in DS dmg, well considering necros cant escape for kitten they deserve the dmg they dish out.
Point is we all know anet struggles to balance out classes but honestly tho if anything there is 2 options either nerf the damage or nerf the range having both is just too greedy…
and its quite funny how many people base build changes solely on sPVP alone which is quite comical because there is WvW as well…and with WvW being such an open space battleground it leaves very little room for counterplays when the range is soo ridiculous…
But hey i play a pew pew ranger if they never nerf it well hey more killings for me i dont mind its hilarious sniping people off when im behind tower~
(edited by PH Law.4063)
you don’t dodge twice thats like giving me a sign of KILL me.
use your defences correctly Take a defence weapon, curtain/block/shield ect don’t rely on dodges to save your kitten, use one dodge and weapon skills.
never ever use both dodges vs a RF, you are better off using one for CC and then using a weapon skill to or port interrupt to cancel out the RF , its also the same for rangers those that use RF properly need to CC you to slow you down so you can;t make it to cover or use skills effectively , Avoid those and you’ll be fine , people are still talking about one build set up .
also the 25 stacks of Vunrability requires full marksman 6 points, pet and ranger hitting for 10 stacks , one misses its only 5 and then 10 from RF one dodge Rather than two reduces the Vun stacks from 25 to 5 , Do not Rely on condi clear to remove Vun stacks when it is so easy to avoid in the first place , don’t waste your utility skills.
also if your comming across consistant Vun stacks that is allowed because of the trait Remorsess ( ages ago people said this skill was worthless untill i again suggested a build on the fourms that is very effective because of remorseless+soimoth(stealths)
that requires a trade of 10% damage dps from Rtw for a controlable % vun boost if IT hits! , thats the risk no hits no boost .
in the end Double dodging will be the death of you , build some weapon defence , since Traits only reduce damage not prevent.

I love my longbow/greatsword ranger
the only problem i have with longbow ranger (being someone who has played it nearly since launch) is that currently it just doesn’t have as much skill involvement as other builds/classes. however, that also means that against a very good player, the build will do extremely badly.
what longbow doesn’t need is nerfs, it needs more involvement in it’s skills to raise the skill roof higher and make it so you actually need to understand the class to pull off a good burst.
it’s the same problem heartseeker spamming thieves had. against bad players, it was extremely op. press 2 over and over and get a free kill. play against a good player though, and they’d shut the thief down.
It isn’t broken. You have to dodge just about every other classes rotation. This isn’t just a rapid fire thing. Dodge is a massive mechanic of the game fighting dynamics. So again, not part of the broke perception. It is but one way to evade Rapid fire.
Just like:
retaliation
wall of reflection
ambient creatures
land
List goes on and on of which any can and usually does negate rapid fire. You want cheese? Go to the Mesmer forum and complain about how broke the moa is.

I question all these Ranger “mains” who think LB is skillless/OP. Play against good players and you’ll find out it’s pretty on par with the rest of the classes. God forbid Rangers be decent for once, lets nerf them based on Rangers nobody ever heard of talking about how cheese they are. Lets not worry about Heartseeker spamming thieves or turret engies and how mindless they can be.
Most classes have a build that can be mindless, however theirs a difference when played by someone good.
It’s so OP that’s why we see a whole 1 played competitively. Pretty sure Ranger is the least represented class in the competitive PvP scene.

Thanks for the feedback. I honestly think that at 1500 + range there should be a damage debuff for longbow. I can understand why a ranger has this range however the damage output and the distance required to gap close for some classes to engage the ranger is just nuts.

Edit. Not every class will have an issue with longbow rangers. The classes that do will still raise their concerns either way.

I started playing gw in 2005, I started gw2 during the early betas. I have tomes saved up to insta level a revanent to 80 the day it comes out, do you really think there is a class I don’t play?
I can beat a longbow ranger on any class because I know the profession inside and out. No matter what variation of the build they are playing they have a weakness, if you are a good enough player those weaknesses are easy to exploit.
” These people” have rangers they likely leveled in pve and have little to no experience using them in combat. By combat I mean an actual fight, not ganking someone when they are fighting someone else and already at 50% health.

Fine nerf it non-use, then what’s next shortbow rate of fire is still too high, sword too sticky/swings too fast.
This clannish campaign to destroy one profession by hoping the develops will placate a crying, immature, and selfish community has too stop. And if you are having such a difficult time in dealing with a profession ask within your profession of choice’s subforum about how to overcome a particle strategy used against you.
If is threads like this why they could not keep a general profession balance subforum around.

Look Bran, it’s just an opinion, not a personal vendetta against Rangers. Some agree in this forum and some don’t. Thanks for the input.
You do realize that threads of this nature are never going to result in a positive discussion as the general wording of aforementioned opinion could very well be view as an attack.
I will point this out those if longbow on ranger as a whole is overpowered and reflection nearly complete shut it down then by definition would no reflection then too be overpowered as well? Futhermore there are numerous non-projectile based ranged skills that are not effected by reflection, which by shutting down longbow on ranger, is overpower thus rending those skills regardless of what else they do overpowered by bypassing an overpowered mechanic.
I think that they need to look at reducing the damage on longbow at max range. It’s just stupid that we can sit back and pew pew people with little to no consequence at 1500+range. Yes I main a ranger although I also play thief and mesmer.

I have a hard time believing that someone who mains the ranger think the different LB specs are too “op”. You should be more than qualified to know how to counter it.

no, it really doesn’t. only if the d/p is exceptionally bad, missing steals, not blinding, mis-timing the re-stealths and openers, etc. im not saying the glassbow is entirely powerless, but the spec relies on luck. im also not discussing 1v1 capability, as this is entirely pointless in conquest. im saying the d/p can jump and kill any glassbow at the worst possible time, because he has the tools to do that. it’s what happens in higher ranks anyway.

Glass longbow vs. glass thief is about as fair a fight as you will find in this game. Ranger has ways to counter thief stealth, evades, cc’s and interrupts. Thief has gap closers, evades, cc’s and interrupts.
Both will have a hard time escaping the other if they try to run. The fights come down to timing and skill.
LGN
the thief will always have timing on his side. so I agree, it is about timing. just not in your favour. killing a d/p when hes not paying attention or training someone else is easy, but killing him when he’s stealthed and hunting for YOU is not. you guys must be new.
getting off topic. to summarize my original point, d/p is a hardcounter to the glassbow, as hardcounter as it gets. so if glassbows bother you, get good at d/p and proceed. glassbow needs a few more buffs to be competitive, not nerfs.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
Yeah, once a d/p thief stealths up and closes the gap, a LB ranger is pretty much screwed. Not easy to keep up in melee wearing glass unless you deal quite a bit of damage first with LB.
The one thing I love about them though is that they pretty much announce when they’re about to go stealth using Black Powder. Just start a Rapid Fire before they can HS and if they’re below 50% hp they should go down. There’s a lot of thieves that don’t have the situational awareness to check when they go in stealth if they’re being targeted by a channel. Even if they dodge out of it taking minimal damage, it prevents them from getting multiple stealth applications on the Black Powder.
I’d say in the end, a d/p thief has the advantage 1v1 especially if it closes the gap. However, in a team fight I think the longbow ranger has the advantage especially if you’re able to free cast from the side.
Well lets do a small comparison on bursts…
rapid fire = 1 skill pew pew, 1500+ range
shatter mesmer = requires multiple skills and positioning, close range
backstab thief = requires multiple skills and positioning, close range
warrior kill shot = 1 skill boom, 1500 range
ds lich necro = 1 skill boom, 1200 range (reduced dmg)
fresh air ele = requires multiple skills
medi glass guard = requires multiple skills, close range
now lets narrow it down…
RF = 2 dodges and still take dmg
warrior kill shot = dodge once and no dmg
ds lich necro = 1 spam cant really dodge out of that
break it down to even more specific
rangers = 1500+ range attacks with sic em with escapes and decent mobility
warriors = 1500 range kill shot with healing signet and amazing escapes and mobility
necros = who are we kidding what mobility…you’re a floormat for zergs or small groups…
and so the winners are!!!!!!

I have 0 problems killing d/p thieves. They are in no way a hard counter. A good cele ele is a hard counter because of their ridiculous sustain. Thieves die easily if you know how to use your melee weapon and pet to fight them, rapid fire is just good for finishing them off when they try to stealth and run.
