Q:

Is there any consensus on Magi’s stats for a bunker/regen/tanky build?

Cleric’s seems to be standard, and obviously more toughness makes your heals go a long way. You can however get a full set of magi’s armor and accessories from karma vendors, which would make it a much cheaper route to go. Unless of course it’s total garbage……

No point in having vitality if you dont have the toughness to stop burst.

Could you elaborate? I’m well past the point I should be asking for “GW2 Stats and Why You Want Them 101”, but…well, better late than never.

Basically people can live long with cleric gear because toughness lowers the damage you take and healing power increases your healing amount.

Vitality is just a buffer.

Basically cleric gear and magi heal the same. But cleric has toughness so it reduces the damage you take so its easier to heal it. Magi has more health but it doesn’t matter if you can’t heal yourself to 100%.

Example let’s say you can heal yourself for 500 health a second. The enemy does 1000 damage a second. Would you rather increase your health from 16,000 to 22,000 or decrease the enemy’s damage from 1,000 to 700.

Other side of the coin… Condition Damage bypasses Toughness, so Vitality and Condition Removal are needed to weather those attacks.

Magi includes Precision while Cleric provides Power. Consider how one benefits your plan over the other.

Finally, the third option, Apothecary, is out there. It lends itself to bunker builds more so than the other two (Cleric and Magi) imo.

Here’s a build that I am fussing with (can’t afford it yet, but planning on something like it).

Yeah I was thinking Magi’s could work because conditions wouldn’t rip through you as quickly. You might also still have enough health to soak up a burst, and then heal back up again.

I’d just go and test it out myself, but you can only get cleric’s or shaman stats in the mists, and while it would be less gold to get a full set of magi’s it’s still a ton of karma.

I run Magis with Cleric Weapons, and Cleric Jewels totaling ~2.6k armor and I wanna say 25k health, with 1300 or so healing power, 44% crit with my perma fury (24% without my fury), and 2390 attack and 45% boon duration.

I’m extremely tanky, and was able to face tank the blue MF boss for almost the entire fight (had to still jump over waves obviously) with my longbow + Sword/WH set up.

Do I do a ton of damage? Not really, I do a decent amount, bubbles cleaves through things like a champion though an that’s all that really matters but I can tank extremely well, am able to ignore a lot of boss mechanics due to my high health medium-high armor and my high regen, and in WvW I am not even bothered by people in 1v1s, they can’t touch me, and being a ranger I don’t give up very much damage due to pet.

For zergs I can run through them and attack people pretty easily but I tend to try to sit on a siege weapon because I find them more fun.

NOTE: I do -not- have a full set of runes (only 4 altruism) my jewels are greens, and my sword/warhorn are rare not exotic, you could absolutely get better stats than me by using a complete set of gear for PvE.

Altruism runes might be a bit under-appreciated. They are great, imo.

@Durzlla,
We must have the same type of fun with our rangers.
Except I like to run through the Zerg to get the siege weapon AND its operator.
Axe+Torch/Shortbow with lots of condition, armor and healing.

Magi’s got more of a point in PvE than it does WvW.

The only other Healing-based options have Toughness as a secondary stat, and toughness has a yet-to-be-defined-but-still-observable relationship to Mob Aggro. So wearing Magi’s over the other two gives you more freedom to, say, meander away from combat and stick a Spirit in a clever hidey hole or Rez somebody without a mob trailing along behind you to mess up your plans.

Ultimately it’s comparable survivability to Cleric’s and Apothecary’s, despite Healing power lacking the same synergy with Vitality that it has with Toughness. It’s just different; with Cleric’s and Apothecary’s you’re a healy juggernaut that can dive into the thick of things and laugh it off, with Magi’s you can ghost around the edges of combat and you’re diving in and out with precision strikes.
