Make Smoke Cloud blind foes!
It will also compensate for the extreme nerf to our blinding trait in druid.
This here is pretty much why I ended up enjoying the smoke assault f2 more. Smoke Field without a blind just makes me scratch my head. At least the cooldown is short.
Yes please. The blinds like it was berfore the swap would be very welcome as a sustain skills. Druid without a zerg around has a very weak survivability, worst than a ranger because you exchanged one trait line for druid.
More skills like those in the other pets would be a very nice first step to flip the hate for the ranger and the pet.
OP, you can use Axe and just auto attack and blind.
The Smoke Cloud ability gives the pet a 5-second evade on use, as long as the smokescale doesn’t leave the cloud. That’s its primary purpose. That it counts as a smoke field for combos is just a bonus (though when the pet was auto-dropping it on top of fire fields in PvE it didn’t seem like much of one, but I digress…).
That’s how combo fields work. They don’t do anything unless you combo off of them. They are a secondary effect tacked onto another ability. And this ability happens to be a pet defensive cooldown.
Other smoke fields happen to be attached to abilities which blind. That’s not a set-in-stone rule. Meet the exception.
Again, what Koja said. And said well. +1
we got the smoke field back, yay! -.-
Without a blind on it like blinding powder, this skill’s only purpose is to provide stealth if you happen to have a staff or greatsword, basically.

actually it’s kitten invuln for your pet as well as a blastable smoke field. Enjoy!
5 seconds became kitten for some reason….
I don’t think it’s supposed to keep blinding enemies. It’s an ability that a pet uses to keep alive. Not every ability needs the same functionality.
We have lots of Projectile finishers to make it a blinding utility.
It’s the smoke field with lowest CD for highest duration. You can’t have everything and I don’t want to have it nerfed just like everything else we asked to be buffed.
I could see like 2 or 3 blind ticks over the duration of it. Would this be too strong with 16 second CD (using BM)?
Am I good?… I’m good.

Using BM already blinds with using it. You’d most definitely only overwrite the 1st tick for longer duration since both the trait and field would potentially tick together.
I wouldn’t find having it on BM the issue. The thing is it might potentially cause an uproar from enemy players saying how broken it already is if you go for full disrupting build (with bursty pet). Having blind on it is not the problem. Risking an overkill of synergy is.
I think it should have a one-time blind application at the start. A blind field would be OP imo.

This doesn’t sound as a bad idea. No synergy overcap with BM risked, only longer blind duration. And more utility for the Ranger without any blind at all.
Yes, I’m up for this idea.
Or revert it back to Smoke assault. I don’t want to be a stinking casual that stealth away to escape from enemies.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
Would like to point out that the elec Wyvern’s static field does nothing as well. No damage, no stuns, just a field to combo through.

Because its hardcore to let them kill you instead?

I don’t think it would be too strong personally. I would love for something like this to happen, it would be great for stomping and avoiding some damage. It would feel more of a utility pet with this change which is cool.

Not exactly the best thing in the world if your build does not run an Axe! With a blind you can stomp players, you can’t stomp while throwing axes.

Which means the F2 serves no purposes for the player if he don’t have any cooldowns on his weapons (apart from weapon autos of course) . I think having a blind field with a few ticks is much more useful than having a smoke field that requires you to blast in to get something out of. I’m speaking more about PvP in general, PvE might be a different story. But if they are going to make this skill a huge cooldown one because of this change, then they should just let it as it is or else people will rage over the mighty 5s increase on the f2.

If you’re dying because you don’t have 3 seconds of stealth, then it is probably best that you switch class.

How about you ask for buffs to the other pets instead of only your best pet.

The Wyvern’s skill does something beneficial for you and itself in addition to it’s field. The Smokescale’s skill only helps itself in addition to it’s field.

Sure,
-Bristleback: f2 needs to be fixed so that it can land on targets 1cm higher than it is.
-Drakes: Make the f2 easier to track the targets, like Bristleback currently does.
Reef Drake and Salamander Drake need an increased range aswell to reliably land or make them bounce just like River Drake and Marsh Drake do.
-Devourers: Put another skill instead of Devourer Retreat, pets evading while doing no damage is plain useless. Increase the damage on the autos aswell.
-Bears: They just need more damage.
-Wyverns: Need to have faster auto attacks in order to be able to land their damage reliably.
Fire Wyvern F2 needs to be buffed because almost nothing lands on targets. The duration of the burning is too low.
Birds, dogs, cats and spiders are already solid I feel, altho I’d like cats to have a slightly lower f2 cd, they just don’t bring anything more than what birds do except having a leap finisher which won’t benefit the player.

That drake change would be so strong lol. But I’m down!
Imo, the fire wyvern F2 field should last longer and the CD should be reduced a bit. Would be a dank pet for some might stacking.

I wasn’t saying that the field shouldn’t blind because the electric field doesnt do anything. More pointing out that both fields don’t really do anything (except the smoke field makes the Smokescale invlun when it is in it).
I would love damage/stun/vuln procs added to the electric field and a 1s blind (pulses every second) on the smoke field but not if it gets nerfed to compensate,
Anyway, those are my thoughts on the issue.

oh mer gerd smoke field that grants 2 seconds of stealth on blast! so good….. /sarcasm
AoE stealth. Get it right.
Plus 5s of immunity to direct and incoming conditions. Makes “Protect Me!” pretty awesome now, since it can be combined with this and you have total immunity 6/48s. As well as SoR, since you can use SC, then the active on SoR and the pet will take no conditions.

Smoke Cloud only causes attacks to be evaded, it doesn’t make the pet immune to damage. I just tried this combo and the pet still took the redirected damage.
I suspect it would also take the redirected conditions as well.

Well, that sucks. But it does state evade and not immunity. I would still think that it would not get the conditions from SoR, though, because it does state immunity to incoming conditions. Maybe another one to test out.
I was gonna test this and went to the NPCs, when I tried my pet was out of range. Nothing makes me angrier.

Tested it in a pve setting and it does seem to treat it as an immunity to conditions. They simply vanished rather than being transfered.
Engie and thief both have smoke fields that blind with relatively low cooldown, both relatively spammable specially thief, but engie has mutiple accesses to them.
If smoke cloud would stay on 16sec, then i’m OK with blinding.
If smoke clould would NOT stay on 16sec, (we get a nerf on CD) i rather don’t have blind on it.
That’s why we have blast, twirl, projectile finishers.

Well, that is nice to know for sure! Cheers for doing the test.
The description itself says it evades attacks and makes immune to conditions. Working as intended, I guess? I might have missed something in the discussion, though.

It would appear that it works exactly as the description states. I just read the description wrong, thinking it would affect all damage. SoR/SS make a nice pair at least.
I was really hoping it would work with “Protect Me!” too, because I use that with SoR and LR. Oh well.
As others have probably pointed out, it does blind if you combo on it with a whirl finisher.
Offhand axe, anyone?
I just feel like Smoke Cloud should really have some blinds in it since it’s an active skill which are generally strong ones. Just a smoke field with no blind is simply not strong enough personally.

Yep, even though I might find it a really amazing tanking ability. I haven’t yet tried it but as soon as I get some nice and willing people to test it with me – I’d definitely like to have it a tanking pet.
But you are right. Currently it’s not just like any other field we use. Not sure if we need it to be the same way as other fields but I can see why so many of us want it to feel more … Self-sufficient in combat.

I would love if a little something extra was added to Smoke Field, but at this rate I think it would be nerfed in either duration or cooldown if it did anything extra.

Pure experience talking, eh?
That’s what I’ve been thinking for a very long time now. With lots of things. And I keep seeing stuff happen. Healing Spring treatment comes to mind.
Yes please, stealth is nice and cute but that’s not enough to be a f2, adding blind would be great.

Yep, I’m afraid to ask for a fix on something that isn’t broken.

Yeah, Lingering Light gets a 400% nerf and then Smokescale gets reverted and GG.
How is that balanced? It’s like giving a child a huge candy bar, letting them take one bite, and then stealing it away from them again.
I can handle the nerf on Lingering Light, maybe it’s a little overboard, but I could handle it if I could blind more, as much as other classes can.
Sylvari Ranger – Anvilrock (ikr…?)
Bump. Irenio, please give us at least this after all the nerfs.
It is kind of hilarious to stand in the field, rapid fire at whoever is bursting you, and watch them miss every swing. Then again, I’m forced to run LB if I want to do that. And I’d rather not run LB.
Pulsing blind lets the smoke field benefit a lot more builds. Why not?

Because having the field benefit for everyone and running longbow at the same time results in pretty much toxic “f@$k you” field.
And we would have it nerfed either in duration or cooldown. And no, neither of us wants that.
Well if you’re relying on your pet for a lot of Utility like blinds then just trait into Beastmastery and grab “Go for the Eyes”, it’ll blind in an aoe around the pet when it uses its F2 skill.
Like other have stated, what the skill does right now is give your pet some evade time and allows you or team mates to leap through the field for stealth.
I personally liked it’s other F2 skill as it was a nice burst attack that hit pretty well in WvW.
