Make way we can play only with Ranger
Rangers are a pet class.
If you don’t like it, play a different class.
Hah… The same situation. I love bowman classes independent of pets. After GW1 I was hoping to see the same here. But …
I’m more afraid of scale of this problem. I try to explain that the percentage of pet’s influence is too high, and people answered to me “not as high as you say.” Those who are satisfied with the situation can not understand the problem of absence of options.
Use a pet with the most vitality and it will almost NEVER go down. Besides, pets do a kitten ton of damage.
He is don’t want to use pet at all. Like it was in GW1. This game supposedly offers unprecedented options. Warrior wanted to shoot a bow – got it. Magician wanted to hit in close combat – got it. Ranger wanted to play without a pet ….. He wanted to tank the mobs by his own …….. where is the option?
I’ll be honest. In GW1 I wished I didn’t have to waste a skill slot just to bring a pet along. Want to heal it too? That’s another skill slot. Oh, you want it to do something snazzy? That’s another skill slot. Heal yourself too? Well of course, another skill slot. Now I have only half of my bar left for my attacks. In GW1 you generally had to spec for BM or your pet was just along for the ride, taking up skillbar space.
I like how in GW2 I get to have my pet all the time without having to sacrifice. On top of that, the pet adds awesome utility and a body shield. Why wouldn’t you want it? You don’t have to spec into your pets. Let them die and don’t bother with them. But they do quite a bit of damage.
If you truly hate the pet, go Thief. They’re another medium-armor class with a nice mix of range/melee attacks and good burst. But I’ll be honest….Rangers are better.

Thieves and Warriors can both use bows without pets. Are they as effective? Sometimes, but they don’t have a pet. Pete said it best.
Well…let’s think here. Has anyone who has argued against pets realized that with pets, rangers effectively have four extra skills at all times? Not to mention the incredible amount of versatility we get with them. And I don’t think rangers were ever designed to be lone wolves – they always have their pets by their sides.
There are two options you could try, they wont get rid of your pet but might let you play closer to the style you want. first you could choose the ranged pets like the spider, they will stand back and lob poison while you melee. Second you could set your pets on passive and just use the brown bear and fern hound for their f2 cleanse/heal. This might not resolve your issues, but will reduce the emphasis on pets. (sorry for any typos, apparently the forums dont like my phone)
4 low damage ability? Do you understand that ranger itself can not reach dps of any other class? And yeah… Both pet can die. And they can not attack in some situations. Then the ranger just a character with a vary little dps. Is it grate? Transfer damage from these abilities on the ranger’s abilities and will be fine.
Soo.. you picked the wrong class, go roll a thief if you want to wear medium armor and do crazy ranged damage all by yourself. Just don’t coma back here crying about being insanely squishy because you don’t have a meat-shield to soak up damage.
Pets are easily kiteable and arrows too (you lose a BIG amount of damage here) , greatsword has been nerfed to death and dagger is badt, longbow have some nice skills but is TOO slow and is really easy to avoid , in skirmish short bow is good but you have too few CC (24 sec a 1 sec stun with low damage…) to counter other players CC.
We can talk about obstructed and not in range , when you are in front of your enemy too…
I know that you can hide your pet, but I’m not sure if you can do so in combat. I’ve never tried.
Honestly I like the pets a lot and like having mine running around with me. However I am not happy with how dependent we are on them for damage.
I feel like they should do less damage and we the Ranger should do more. The balance is off atm because of the poor AI and the ease of which pets die. Unless you make a build centered around your pet, they are weak vs the reliance on their damage.
Either buff Pet survivability/fix AI or nerf pet damage and raise Ranger damage. If A.Net wants our pet to be a huge factor then an easy fix for pet survival would be to reduce AoE damage to the pet, that is my biggest complaint.
Although maybe it would be cool to have a one non-pet build say the 20 pt trait removes your pet and does some stuff to compensate, I would be open to that.
@MeGaZlo – pet’s do not have 4 low damage abilities. Their damage is clearly not small, otherwise you woudn’t be upset about having to rely on them for dps.
1st: some pets have skills that can CC and buff parties, some can self-heal, drop threat, cleanse conditions, etc.
2nd: if pet dies, swap to 2nd pet & gain quickness
3rd: ranger has just as much dps as any other class.

No, they has not. What classes you played at 80th lvl? Ranger can only compete with Mesmer and Necromancer. Weakly. Those, on average, have 10-15% more damage without pets. Guardian, Warrior, Elementalist makes triple(!) more damage than a ranger without pet.
Ranger should be the best with bow, but is one of the bow users with less damage….
I used to think the same as you but I’ve since grown to love Mr Snugglesworth and Lord Woofington.
Still would be nice to have the choice to load more into yourself and less into the pet.

Going by that logic, why can’t I have all the Theif’s stealths on a Warrior? Wheres the choice for elementalist to drop its attunements and have weapon swaps instead? Wheres the option for mesmer to not have all its weapon skills be based around summoning clones and phantasms?
Why does it seem a Warrior with a longbow does more damage and has no ill effects for shooting close range like a ranger does? I don’t understand. Also, they shoot 2 arrows with their basic attack, and seem to have more control abilities with a bow then a ranger ( a class supposed to be specialized in range. )

Pets can do impressive damage one on one. Show some love to your pet by getting those traits from skirmish(30% more crit damage, speed and life gain on crit) and Beastmaster tree and you will see how strong they are. The life gain from crit is so good that my usually-fragile-kitty is able to tank mobs on its own for quite a while dealing nice crits. Hell sometimes they have more durability than me =.=
But I have to agree with current condition of pet AI that you will need more micromanagement for them to be effective. A crippled on the target usually works like a charm, preventing target from avoiding those damage from my cat.
If you only look out for yourself in game, it’s inevitable that your pet will be useless.

I don’t know why it seems that way to you, but it’s not a widely held opinion.
The warrior longbow autoattack does not outdamage the ranger version, particularly from long range. Hell the warrior doesn’t even have long range with a longbow – it’s only 900 range for them. They don’t have more control abilities with a bow, either. They have an immobilize vs the ranger’s knockback plus AE cripple.
Also, the ranger in GW2, unlike the original guild wars, is not a specialized ranged character, nor is the warrior a specialized melee character. You may not have noticed, but every single profession has access to both melee and ranged attacks. Arenanet didn’t give warriors access to longbows and rangers access to swords just to be goofy. They are intended to be useful and, at least in the right circumstances, powerful. I don’t think you be proceeding from the assumption that rangers are supposed to be better than warriors with a longbow.

There are so many pets with so many abilities, that i am fairly sure you can find one that suits your needs. If you dislike pets in general, i would advice you to take 2 small birds. They take up the least screenspace and don’t walk infront of your feet most the time, they also seem NOT to shoot over when you stop walking… I personally like pets, but i dislike some of the things mentioned above from other pets, so I run with 1 raven most the time. The other pet is a Hyena, which i draw out when i notice i’m being overwhelmed, i quickly hit F2 and get another Hyena… between the 3 of us we tend to do fairly well … but my Hyena friends get nothing more than what they kill and a pat on the back, when i stow them away for my Raven… they are way less of a ‘burdon’ (see, the name in it self offers the sollution … pets annoying? = Burd On

Why allways black or white.
It would be nice if we could stow pet untill we activate it again and gate a small bonus in other stats.
Another thing is that eg marksmanship has a alpha training and that kind of thing fitts beastmastery bransh.
You played ranger in gw1. You want to be a character that is a neutral and a nature person, AND you do not want to be a criminal. Ranger has all skills you like and everything exept you don’t want a pet with his own will running around and die. If they would do something so you don’t have to play with pet why would that bother you, you can still use it if you want.

If they gave them some max-range options such as rifle or longbow, I would have. >_>
Mid-range is bleh.
A shame fun things could not simply be fun.
you can ignore your pet or use a non-tank pet. just like a mesmer that never shatters illusions, thief that doesn’t use steal, necro that never uses death shroud etc. you can be a ranger that doesn’t use the class mechanic. anet’s not going to remove it though.
So this is like the 140th topic about this.
Can you please use the search option from time to time ?
I do agree you shuld be allowed to permanently stow your pet, but you should gain no buffs from doing that, it should be purely cosmetic and more of a handicap. Everyone should be allowed to play the game the way they want even if it isn’t the best choice so why not ? Just no buffs.
more deadly than any that walks this earth. Put aside the Ranger.
Become who you were born to be. I give hope to men. I keep none for myself.

I like Ranger the way it is personally. But I like pet classes.
In FFXI, Beastmaster was one of my favorite jobs after all.
In GW2 I would have liked it if there was a Bow class with no pets and a class that uses pets by charming them, similar to current rangers. Tho I’d like pet abilities to be expanded on more for better control. Along with more pets.
Would be nice to see future expansions break off certain classes into two types. Say a ranger that forgoes the use of its pets and one that further enhances pets abilities and control over said pet.
I never played gw1, so I have no clue how likely this might be.
