Asura, of course.

Charr have a reputation for training war beasts.
Norn revere the spirits of the wild and are likely to run with their animal counterparts.
Sylvari are walking plants with a special interest in all other forms of life.
Humans train all kinds of pets. Nothing special there.
Asura may probably be the race with the lowest amount of rangers among their midst, except for those who study fauna or want to get away from the typical Asura society, which usually values technological solutions over a more natural approach.

Of course, this is just my point of view.
Many other views are likely to exist as well.

Ranger really works with all of the races, just like every other class.
I suggest creating a simple backstory for your ranger and then going with the race that suits you best.

Asura.
Best animations, their small size is a huge advantage in WvW/PvP, and they have some useful skills that work really well in ranger builds, like the synergy between technobabble and moment of clarity.

If you care about big shiny weapons and armor, go with one of the bigger races…but the Asura animations are the best by far. I have both an human and an Asura…the human mostly for vanity’s sake (as the weapon/armor skins are best on humans…ANet loves the easy to design around race). So when I want to run around looking awesome, I’ll play the human but the Asura is my favorite.

Norn works well for those human armors too … just a “bigger human” for the most part … so easy to skin for … and they don’t just stretch it (that would look awful if they did).
