Making sword better
There is nothing that Arena.Net can do to fix this unfortunately as it feels perfectly fine for me. This can only be resolved by getting in touch with your local government official to try and promote faster/cheaper internet access within Australia.

Not true at all, the issue is that the current implementation of the AA requires an extra server roundtrip in order to work out whether the leap connects with its target and then to leap you to that position.
It’s a badly conceived and implemented design, I know this because up until last year I was a snr server dev for a major mmo, and I can verify the behaviour by artificially inducing higher latency.

Well I want to believe what you say Scerevisiae, but 99% of the people who play MMOs/Online games are computer experts or developers
However; if you are correct, then I would recommend you find the correct means to provide detailed feedback, with your experience/knowledge in how to professionally combat this problem, within your thread.

I thought that’s what I just did.
Hornet Sting is fine how it is. Works great in combat and isn’t very hard to get use to going forward with on both leaps.
I think hornets sting should be a 1/4 second cast time actually. Make that evasion more controllable.
- the #2 ought to be the leap forwards
- the #3 ought to be the leap backwards
- serpent’s strike (the evasive roll currently on #3) ought to chain off the #2 forward leap.
- if the above changes were made, there wouldn’t really need to be the root/leap on the #1.
I don’t like that “improvement”
Sword two you already have two leaps you can use to make a combination of two leaps of either backwards/forwards, backwards/backwards, forwards/forwards, forwards/backwards…
Sword three helps me evade on a point where I don’t want to leap off somewhere when I fight people in cliffs/tight spots.
I’m not saying what we have now is perfect but the change proposed seriously gimps ranger mobility and usefulness as a PVP weapon.
HoT = WvW players forced to PVE
I don’t think anything much is wrong with the sword. it just is what it is. it could use tweaks like reducing cast time on #2 or making the evade last longer, but it has a role in both power and condi builds. there are other weapons that need real revamps, like OH axe and SB.
I’d just want the cast times reduced on both #2 and #3
I usually get killed at a time where I should be evading.
And that’s not user friendly

In practise you can only go forward on both leaps when escaping or closing a large gap, in that it takes valuable time to stop, turn, then leap backward. the last thing i want to be doing when charging into an opposing force is to stop, turn, backward leap, then turn, select appropriate target, leap forwards.

Could always just bind a key to the 180 degree turn command.

I do have a key bound to the 180 turn. Using it together with the reverse leap is really unreliable.

Workarounds needed to deal with shoddy design/implementation welcome to ranger.
Of course it’s a work around, you are doing something the skill isn’t really intended to do. You see Thieves do it all the time with Withdraw, or Mesmers with Staff#2, and while it’s easier because it’s just one roll it doesn’t change the fact that this isn’t a Ranger thing. If you want to use a backwards roll to go forwards then be prepared to put in the effort.
Personally I think it works fine… use about-turn and hit #2.. then as your character is doing that you can turn your camera normally and by the time the second leap is actually ready to be used you are already facing any which way you want to go. It’s easy.
That said.. I agree the delay on the first leap is a little annoying, especially since it’s an evade. Having a delay on an evade is an odd design choice to me. I also wouldnt mind the #3 doing more forward-ing and less sideways-ing, like the Dagger#4 does. As it is, I don’t use the Sword#3 all the much except at point blank range or if my target is to the right of me, simply because it’s not in any way productive otherwise.
