Too many times we look at a weapon and focus on the damage number. Maybe its because WoW and its clones have tainted weapon perception too much. In those games no matter what weapon the players uses they keep the same abilities/skills resulting in weapons simply being “stat sticks.” Max DPS = this weapon+this tier gear and that was that.

In this game, we should be looking at the effects that weapons bring and how we can use it to impact a fight. In WvW, running a condition based bunker BM build, I use axe to throw bleeds, chill and some damage. Paired up with a torch and then a sword/dagger and I have a very effective condition build. Granted I could choose other weapons like short bow or great sword for conditions but that is based on my preferences and play-style. I’m effective with that build. Do I punch out zerk level damage, no. Why? I don’t want to. Instead I choose the build and weapons needed to support how I like to play.

Remember in GW1 where whiling defense was a stance and you could move and do other things while it was active? I miss those days.

I would like to set the record straight for you and everyone else who is saying ranger main-hand axe does horrible DPS.

I am a long, long-time ranger player, and have found that ranger main-hand axe is the absolute best DPS zerker weapon against mobs in dungeons. Sure, it has horrible single target damage, but if you put 2 enemies next to each other, you instantly get 3x more damage.

I run a full glass cannon build, and do an average of 1.5k damage on critical hits per bounce. That’s regularly 4.5k total damage per axe toss. I obviously don’t use axe against bosses or single enemies, but against mobs in dungeons, main-hand axe is king.

Remember when we actually had stances? And preparations, and useful spirits, and were feared for our control abilities?

Yeah, GW1 had a lot more depth.
