So I just started my 2nd ranger (deleted first one when I first came to game) decided to give the ranger another shot in SPVP. I wanted to play longbow/greatsword power precision build. I made my build nothing special. 30 20 20.

A few things I have noticed. The longbow feels clunky as hell. The number 2 ability rapid fire, what is up with half of the arrows being obstructed? In fact a huge chunk of my auto attack and rapid fire arrows are obstructed. What is obstructing them? Am I doing something wrong?

Second thing is that the longbow is just awkward for SPVP. The auto attacks are slow and hit hard, but when a thief gets in your face and is heart seeker spamming you, trying to circle strafe and move while firing arrows doesn’t work at all, the auto attack is so slow for close up. I’m fine with switching weapons for close combat, but nobody stays at range in SPVP. I had real problems trying to land and fire shots on warriors and thiefs that are in my face. I’m trying the kb on longbow, but the enemy or myself usually strafed out of it (cuts the corner really tightly strafing me close) causing the shot to go on global cool down. Anyone have any advice on how to fix this?

Greatsword I don’t mind I haven’t had an issue with it, auto attack is critting for 1.2k and hitting normally for 600 which seems a little on the low side. Arena net has the policy that melee weapons should do more damage, then why does the melee greatsword on a ranger hit so much weaker than a warrior? Both classes have to get in the mix with these weapons, ranger has lower life and armor.

My last piece of feedback that I noticed is about pets.

Holy hell they did fast. They get destroyed by any type of Aoe, how is this ok? Every few seconds my ranger says no my old friend. They are dying quicker than I can switch Pets out!

Thanks for an input just wanted to leave a little feedback, if anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it thanks.

i would say something to comfort you..but i got nothing to say.

ranger has been broken for a while, and even more so with the last few patches buffing other classes, warrior in particular.

rangers been forgotten and left behind, despite we promise we were given that turned out to be a lie.

ranger melee was nerfed a long way back and has been something of a joke.
as for that obstructed thing, we have told Anet about it again and again but havent gotten a fix or response.

for now i would suggest you let ranger go and play a longbow warrior. with Anet choosing warrior as their favorite it already outmatches ranger in ranged dmg.

apparently this next patch is supposed to have the fix for ranger, but based of the last patch that was supposed to be the same thing, i wouldnt get your hopes up. Anet doesnt want to change the ranger, and the only way the ranger will be worthwhile is if it undergoes ALOT of changes.

if you dont believe me find a GM, and notice what class they are playing. 90% of the time it warrior, 10% it varies but isnt ever ranger.

The question is, why are you using longbow autoattack? Why not shortbow?

Longbow does get obstructed a lot. Terrain seems to be the culprit, but nobody really knows for sure except ANet and they’re not really volunteering any information. Second, longbow isn’t a great primary weapon for sPvP. It’s pretty good for a support weapon, but if you’re trying to make it your primary weapon, you’re going to continue to be disappointed.

Greatsword has WAY more utility than the Warrior greatsword, which is why it does less damage. Sword actually does more damage for Rangers, but there’s an entirely different set of issues with using a sword and unless you’re familiar with the weapon (or have the time and patience to learn the intricacies of using sword) you’re probably not going to be able to jump right in the mix with one.

Your pets are dying fast because your build isn’t focused on pet survivability (or your
own, really). Without any points or traits in BM, your pet is going to die. A lot. That’s just how it works. If you focus on doing damage with your bow, your pet and melee abilities are going to suffer.

I am not a big fan of the condition damage playstyle. I like to play a heavy hitter, not necessarily a glass cannon but I prefer damage over conditions. shouldn’t we have this option?

Even if you’re going for direct damage, short bow is still your best option. Sadly, the longbow is pretty much inferior to the short bow in almost every way.

I already have a warrior, and I absolutely love that class, I decided to try a ranger because I’m a big fan of archers as well. After messing around with the ranger for a bit, I just couldn’t believe how far apart on the spectrum these classes were about effectiveness. My warrior has swiftness all the time , HUGE melee damage and HUGE ranged damage, 2 sets of endure pain (invulnerable), plus shield stance for an additional. 3 seconds of invul, as well as axe main hand eviscerate for gap closing. The greatsword damages couldn’t be farther apart, which I really don’t understand. They are both melee and more than likely both classes are going to take damage while in combat with these weapons. My warrior GS hits for 2.5k Crit and my ranger 1.3k Crit (same gear and Crit damage and percent). I do understand there is an evade on ranger #3 attack of auto chain, but it is EXTREMELY hard to time that to be useful.

Nldixon said my pets were dying because I didn’t spec into them, do I really have to spec pet trait line to just keep them alive!? Doesn’t that seem wrong to you guys? I understand speccing beast mastery line for increasing pet damage, or pet boones, or recharging their abilities faster, but Have to Spec to keep them alive? What the hell is the point of the class mechanic if you HAVE To spec into it just to keep your pets in the game and not killed?

Really? Aw gawd that’s terrible to hear. I love the idea of the longbow, but it was pretty much a waste in SPVP, thief steals, and starts attacking and strafing you and you will never get those abilities to fire in the angles players are moving. Auto attack is worthless up close.

They have done a bunch of Upgrades on the way elementalist and other classes abilities responsiveness, like the KB in earth, fixed the responsiveness, allowing abilities to flow into and after it better. I think they need to go over the responsiveness of the long bow, it seems really clunky and awkward.

Well Longbow has great utility. It’s 2 is decent burst, vulnerability from 3 is nice, 4 is nice, 5 is nice…but it’s autoattack is soooooooooo uninspiring. If you plan on mainly using autoattacks, shortbow would be your best bet. It does less damage but the firing rate is so much faster. Even if you ignore condition damage, I’m pretty sure it out damages longbow (by just autoattack). And in addition, you have a interrupt on 5 which is so so so useful.

Either spec into them or start swapping them every 20 seconds. You can also use a ranged pet or a bear to try and make them last longer.

That’s about it.
