So I would first off like to say that I am in no way upset about this game. I am not familiar with Guild Wars since I never got the chance to pick up the first one. This game is great and I know there are a few builds out for Rangers that are quite confusing. Leading to my question; what build should I go for?
I tend to lean more towards the DPS class on every MMORPG I get my hands on; and yes they are all similar in some sort of way. I am only Lvl 20 so I was wondering if I could get some tips and maybe some of the DPS builds you guys are running. Like I said before, I barely know anything about this class in particular and I am very unfamiliar with this game. I can say this though; I am looking for a DPS build for questing. Not so much PVP. Indeed I will eventually need to look into that as well.
But yea thats basically it. Any information will help me. As far as point distribution, weapons, and what spells I should be using. (Currently using long bow and great sword). Any crafting suggestions would be great too!
Thank you and I appreciate all answers and advice!

Well, then I’d suggest Speccing mainly into Marksman and Wilderness survival, and toss 10 into Beastmastery(By level 80, I mean, not all right now). Go towards equipment with power or toughness. Condition damage might be good if you want a little added flavor for your traps. Pick up entangle as your elite.
But maybe someone who plays the same style could be more specific. I’m using a condition build, so I’m just making educated guesses here.
Well, you’ll probably get a lot of posts about this, because it’s mostly true:
True DPS builds (High damage, low defense) pretty much do not exist. Trying to go glass cannon will get you killed a lot more than you killing a lot.
You need to mix it up a little. And your playstyle heavily factors in – specifically, do you prefer long-range with a melee panic button, or the other way around? How are you with your pet?

Basically I play from a distance with my bow until mobs are aggro, than I set traps and go to melee with great sword. Once I feel like I wont last I dodge back and start off from the top. All while my bear tanks.

Still does make quite a bit of sense though. I’ve been wondering as to why I have been dying so much but I don’t think I was spec’d for my play style. Thanks for the advice!

I find at low levels that buffs and traits aren’t all that important, but mostly slap power, toughness and some vitality on my armor. What is more important in GW2 compared to older games is movement:
- Make sure your key bindings (don’t click your skills) allow you to circle strafe and fire off your skills at the same time.
- use the mouse to turn and not the keyboard (a lot of people still do this)
- dodge/roll is your friend, not only to evade, but also as a gap opener – My first five trait points went into Wilderness Survival to get the minor trait Natural Vigor that speeds up the regeneration of endurance (recharges your dodge/roll quicker).
