Hey everyone! I am new to the game and decided on a ranger to start. I came over from wow and have no real clue what I am doing. Any tips, tricks or advice for a newb?

Just the general MMORPG advice. For a Ranger, build on Power and Precision as well as Crit Damage and you’ll be great. As for the traits, most people do what they want and decide what works best. If you’re not a person that likes to do that, there are multiple builds on the forums all over the place. Other than the general advice, hoard money like it would save your life one day, because it probably will. Hang out with people that you like and start leveling with them/doing quests. At level 35, start doing dungeons to level up and gain money quickly. Hope this helps

Thank you so much! Any help i can get is awesome! i don’t know anyone that plays yet. I joined because i got tired of WoW and it looked like a lot of fun.

The ranger can wield short bow and long bow, and i personally use just those. The sword and warhorn is nice for teamplay (buffs) and some fightning, and the Great sword is cool looking and fun to play but yea.. not so effective and we have reduced armor. Dual axe looks good but yea.. better with bows lol
Personally i just go with the bows.

Try out different pets and their skills. Its fun. But for most dmg then go feline. For kd`s and cripple use dog or wolf. For snares it is spiders and for tank it is bears. You can have two pets that you activate as you please, but with recharge timer.

Ranger is king in pve. Not so much in pvp.

My tip is to make your ranger with good armor and some hp. Your dmg is good in pve almost no matter what you do. But upgrade weapon and armor every 10 levels or so.

You can also try out pvp and www from early lvl so just go for it and try different things.

Ranger can use a lot of weapon Shot/Long bow Axe sword 2Hsword torch dagger.
Choose 1of love weapon and sub weapon for any fight we can do anything but not expert on everything untill you get grand master traits you will see what you can do.
Focus on high end skill or jack of all trade it’s up to you.

About skill spend skill-point wisely at first start because you not get a lot of skill point easy at low LV think first what do you like to suit your style play.

BTW ranger PvE is not hard we can go everywhere but PvP or WWW ranger is handicap cleass you must use skill more to handle another enemy class and I feel sorry no easy mode for ranger lol~

You have EXP about WoW right GW2 is not hard all LV up come from dig-mat,open map, kill monster, Do event,Craft item(Craft item match your char LV is very good for play you got both LV and gear.Ex go LV> farm some mat>got mat>craft item>go LV at higher place).

First part of that post in maybe the worst advise to a new ranger ever. Never use power, prec and crt dmg build ( bers ) on ranger, cause you will die in seconds in www and pvp. You may try that in dungeons, however I don’t see reasons behind that as well. Rangers in this game are NOT like rangers in other MMOs. The can’t produce tons of damage even in bers spec and are easily outdpsed by ranged wars. Our class have major issues discussed in a nearby thread named “Robert Hrouda…”.

So, sir, i personally will recommend you speccing in a trap or BM build. Both these builds have detailed explanation on forum pages and in google. Also consider watching some videos on YouTube. You might as well want to visit a thread named “Little Ranger Tips” nearby.
But never use a glass cannon build on Ranger in this game – it pretty much lacks cannon actually.

Thank you for the tips. I will check those posts out here shortly. I have always been a caster class in all other games i have played so i am way outside of my comfort zone here.
I have been looking into the BM build. I think that is the direction i am going to go in for now.

My pleasure, Ms. ) I suggest you try elementalist or mesmer if u have always played “caster” type classes. At the moment they are way better in every single aspect of the game.

glass cannon rangers are really bad . You do half the damage of other GC classes .

What ranger does great is mobility and consistent damage .

If you want to go for a condition build (spell caster) you would want rabid or rampager gear . Axe + warhorn and sword+torch . Trait up 30 in skirmishing and upgrade trap traits . 15 in beastmastery for the fast swapping . Rest in wilderness survival.

Alternatively you can go for a more power less condition , i would suggest full knight gear with 30 in wilderness 25 in skirmishing and 15 in beastmastery .

At the moment you should put at least 15 in BM because otherwise pets will be completely useless , but they still are considered at least 30% of a rangers value .

My fault, I left out the PvE at the end. Use Power, precision, crit damage in PvE, definitely not in PvP. And, I ,as well, suggest playing an Elementalist. I have an 80 Elementalist that destroys in PvE and PvP, I just like the way they handle certain situations that pop up. So, yeah, if you’re more comfortable playing a caster class, play an Elementalist.

I d rather say play Pow prec crit in solo PvE. Because in dungeons and FotM it is useless as well.
