New WvW Ranger here - my impression

I have now played for some days with ranger. While I still enjoy it and have learned to utilize some of the skills better, I have one issue with the profession. And that issue is responsiveness.
Especially Sword #2 (the first in the chain) takes ages till it reacts. So one has to preemtivly use it, in expectence of an attack. If u start using the skill, when u see the enemy anaimation of the atack u want to avoid, it is simply to late to do it. That lack of responsiveness is increased by the Sword #1 root, as mentioned in other threads already. Timed dodges are very hard and u have to spam the dodge button if wanna get out of the rooting of #1 and dodge.
As pets I use the wolf for fear and the bear for condition remove. Those two skills, while they are very awesome, take also a very long time to trigger. Making it hard to utilize those skill on time.
I feel that the ranger could be even more fun to play and more competetive, if the response time on those skills would be improved, so that fighting feels more fluent. As it is now, you have to know your opponent (as a multy profession player, I actually know often, what to expect from other professions) and preemtivly try to avoid attacks. With no other profession I played this kind of opponent behaviour prediction is needed to play effectivly. If you predict right, you still can compete very well, but if u guessed wrong it results in a wasted evade and you soon are a corpse to lay in the grass^^

sword 2 is hit and evade skill (with poison) so if anything to bring evade quicker we need to be able of make this “hit” faster….

At first I liked the sword/warhorn build, but sword 1 and sword 2 react “weird” to me. It’s not an attack you can alwyas use like the warrior auto attack 1 of sword or even the auto attacks from both bows. The weird jumping and hopping makes it annoying imo. Why cant I just use sword skill one while moving instead of the weird hopping.
I guess I don’t understand why people seem so against the Sword 1 auto-attack chain. In WvW it is extremely valuable. It allows you to stick like glue to your opponent, they simply cannot run away.
I’ll admit it is unnecessary and somewhat annoying when using it against mobs. You also need to be careful using it cliff ledges… but I think the unique “stick like glue” feature far offsets this when fighting human opponents.
I haven’t really noticed any unusual delay on sword #2 myself. Only if I’m in the middle of a leap in the #1 chain. Could that be it?
Some say it helps to turn off auto attack to get better control of the #1 chain, but I haven’t felt the need to do so yet.
I definitely agree with the f2 ability. It often feels like nothing is happening at all. That or it takes way too long before the ability goes off.
Happy to hear you’re enjoying your ranger, though. My ranger is my 4th lv 80 and the one I enjoy/play the most atm. At least it’s great for soloing in WvW, which is what I’ve been doing lately.

I turned off auto attack, so I can run away from zergs better in WvW^^. Deselct target and jump werever u want. So I tunred it off for #2. And here is my problem with the delay. I mostly fight with Longbow. When I but are in too much trouble and my Lightning reflexes are in CD, then I need to get away with #2. So I switch and use it. But here my ranger is stuck for (it feels like) an eternety in the prejump animation, making it easy to get hit by a quick stun.
However, when fighting 1v1 it happens often that, when I use sword, I am stuck in #1 animation. I see that Guardina rais his hammer. I know he is going to smash me down, so I try to evade with #2 (again, if lightning reflexes is not availabe) and it takes too much time, so I am hit and smashed into the ground. And mostly, that ground tastes horrible.
However, I had with my guild some tornement matches in PvP. My first time with ranger^^. But it was awesome (sam build I use in WvW, glass cannon berserker rampager mix). But again, sometimes it would take ages for my wolf to fear the opponent from the spot… that is really annoying…

And btw don’t underestimate the ability of our tier’s players. You might be suprised. We are few, that doesn’t mean we’re all scrubs.

nope sword 3 is evade and hit with the poison
(2: hornet sting hit/poison(sorry my mistake no poison at this point ) and evade backwards – chain to leap back to the fight 3: Seprents strike dodge around Your target and hit with poison)

I’m impressed that TyPin could find out all of these issues so quickly, yet Dev can sit there and tell us we are all newbs and need to learn how to play.
Edit: Dev Hrouda : “Ranger toolbox isn’t just utilities, folks, it’s your 1-5. And between LR and QZ, there’s a TON of utility power in just those two alone, leaving a third open for whatever you feel you may need in the fight and to better define your play style. Shortbow is full of utility and also does really good sustained DPS, so I stand by my statement of rangers having an expansive tool box.
As for Ranger DPS not matching thief burst… yeah, that’s pretty obvious – I don’t think I’m rocking some boat by saying that. I accept that trade-off of lacking burst potential for having a better toolbox of things I can do to survive while outputting consistent DPS. I can see the longbow as maybe being a bit spiky, but nowhere near what a D/D can do. Maybe a trap ranger can get a bit bursty if they hit all 3 traps at once on a glass cannon, but Ranger to me isn’t a burst class – it’s a sustain and survive class” ala: Learn to play.

atm thief is the best survivor. perma stealth any time and bb. or maybe guardian. dmg and survive.

Well I dont see it like that at all. I might be using it wrong be the whole chain never seems to hit anyone, I just look like an idiot hopping all over the place and not being able to stop the attack. Maybe it’s good against someone running away in a straight line from you, but who the hell does that in wvw. If someone gets cornerned against a wall or cliff then the sword chain does do a fair amount of damage..
I wish the GS was a bit better, the jump with that is perfect to catch running foes.
Ever turned arround chasing a foe, hit sword #2 face him back and hit #2 again? It’s like mesmer Phase retreat: Used the right way you can go anywhere with it^^

Ranger in WvW is one of the most fun I ever had. I don’t know for sure yet, how competetive the ranger is in the spectrum of skills needed in WvW, but for sure I can say, that I find it the most fun profession to play atm.
