New player , first char. Ranger
-When 80 you have enough hero points for everything so it wont matter as much what you spend it on on a low level. (And you can change traits etc whenever you want)
-The race is not really important its just a personal preference of what you want to look like.
-You could just watch some ranger gameplay on youtube of different things like wvw, pve and pvp content and maybe learn some tricks that way.
You’ll get enough Hero Points by the level 80 to unlock everything. Try using the gear that has POWER stat on it (Strong/Berserker’s prefixes), get yourself a greatsword – it’s good for leveling, take any trait line for your liking – you’ll have enough time to learn pros of every of them LATER. Most damaging pets in pve scenario are cats and birds, canines are pvp oriented, bears/drakes are tanky – quite good for soloing stuff.
When you reach level 80, you will have more hero points than what is required to unlock all the skills and traits (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hero_point)
As for the race, it really depends on your personal choice. It does not have any impact on the performance of your character. The only difference between the races are the “racial skills” (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Racial_skill).
As for the other professions, it depends on your play style / what you like. For me, I prefer to use a ranged/caster character than a melee character.

I prefer melee characters personally. And melee ranger is a lot of fun (if you can learn to play around that crappy sword auto attack). It definitely has a higher skill ceiling than a pewpew longbow ranger.
I’ve been trying ranged combat again with a necromancer, but I still find myself rushing into melee range, even with lich form and death shroud having mostly ranged skills.

Hi
Good advices, exactly what I was seeking , I didnt think about a ranger melee , ill have to give it a try
Thanks
On a side note, Norn is actually a pretty good choice for Fractals once you reach that stage in the game. Their racial elite solos the cooling room (although Ranger can do it without it anyway).
You’ll see what I mean when you get there.
Norn is good for WvW for access to stealth + 2200 range Dash+Pounce on the Snow Leopard racial elite. For PvP though, I wish I was smaller so that my animations were harder for enemies to see. I did buy a makeover kit so I could shrink my Norn Ranger down to the smallest possible size.

I’ve never been able to solo the reactor room as a ranger at scale 50. Though I think it’s because entering the reactor room replaces your weapons with those useless skills, which also removes any agony resistance on your weapons (even though it shouldn’t remove the agony resistance).

Im playing with sword and dagger , its alot of fun , I always thought from past games , ranger = only bow
I was wondering whats your favorites weapon combo ? Like axe , dagg etc. Do you keep a shortbow for weapon swapping ?
