I was looking for some advise on how I should set myself up. I never played the game and I chose ranger. I am level 11 or 12 not sure if I just dinged. I have 1 trait point and about 6 weapon skills to spend. Coming into game I had axe main/dagger off as those were the weapons that dropped. I just killed Belrick and chose a small crossbow. I didnt have a chance to review between greatsword longbow and crossbow so I took what I figured would have the fastest attack all things being equal and not beable to keep things at a distance.

Basically I want to know is what would be the most viable setup i should strive for and what skills i should try to obtain.

Any and all information would be greatful. (little background played Ranger in EQ this ranger is nothing like that, WoW main was mage and all others secondary leveled max as of the time i stopped, also have diabo 3 all maxed but mostly DH).

Still getting used to moving around as I find it clunky running then using keys to look left or right but it appears as a strafe instead of turn in direction, having to stop face then run a bit of a pain.

Well nothing is overall more viable than others, that being said I’d try to make it so you can do ranged and melee (there’s a lot of mobs later that can reflect projectiles so it kinda makes you have to wait or kill yourself).

That being said idk how to help you out unless you give more info on how you wanna play.

The most important thing is to experiment. Experiment with all of the weapons that a ranger can use and decide what you like the most, then build from there.

For me, I liked long range combat and bows so I built my ranger as an archer. As I played with a lb/sb set up, I didn’t like condition damage as much so I opted for direct-damage instead and geared accordingly. If I felt like I was going down too often, I tweaked my gear to accommodate for more toughness/vit. I chose traits based on what I wanted to do and worked with many different ones to complement my playstyle.

The whole point of what I’m trying to say is play your ranger in a way that is comfortable with you. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t find your perfect set up anytime soon; I sure as hell didn’t find my final set up until weeks after hitting 80. Make it a goal to try everything out that a ranger can do and see what fits your playstyle.

I’m new too. I started as a Thief but wasn’t enjoying it all that much so changed to Ranger. Am currently level 17/18.

Main hand: Sword (Could use axe too)
Off Hand : War Horn ( Love the Hunters call and call of the wild adds Swiftness, fury and might to you an nearby allies )

Second weapon set : Shortbow

Slot 6 (Healing): Troll Unguent (Heals you & pet over time)

Slot 7 & 8 (Utility skills) : Vipers nest ( Trap, seems to do plenty of damage) & Entangle ( traps enemy in vines ) (It shows as an elite skill for some reason on sites but I could have it at like level 11)

Currently Have 7/8 points in Markmanship trait for added power and Condition duration

And that is me as of right now. Works pretty well in PVE. The Melee weapons are damaging and the shortbow is quick with decent range and a skill that allows you to jump back and shoot which comes in handy.

I use Shortbow most of the time and try to lure them in to vipers nest and use entangle to help me escape powerful single targets.

As for traits I think My next lot will go into Skirmish for more precision & Crtical damage and then have some in beast mastery for healing and Wilderness Survival for toughness.
