New to Rangers, any tips on managing pets?

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding something. But you don’t want the mob to attack your pet. But then you don’t want mobs to target you? I’m confused by your statement…
Also, what kind of pet do you have exactly? Pets should still attack perfectly fine when they are being attacked (Barring, of course, death).
I am a PvE player.
I really want to get the mobs off my pet so that it becomes extra dps instead of being a tank. However, I use a mainhand sword. I tried pressing F3 so that the mob gets off my pet and targets me instead. However, it doesn’t work for me.
Try using sword/torch and just laying down as much damage as you possibly can. There’s no foolproof way to make sure you have aggro or your pet has aggro. Threat isn’t fully understood in GW2 and it also varies from mob to mob. Some mobs generate more hate towards melee attacks, some generate more towards ranged attacks. You just have to figure it out on a case by case basis.
Alternatively, you can go heavy into BM and just let your pet do it’s thing while you whittle away at the mobs. With the right build, pets become killing machines in PvE and are very difficult to kill.
No. I want the mobs off my pet so mobs attacks me. I re-read the OP again and I don’t see what is wrong with it.

Later on you won’t have that problem since mobs tend to target you more often than your pet, but i guess if you have 15 points into BM you could just swap the pet and therefor lossing aggro (just a guess), you also gain 2 seconds quickness which helps melting down mobs. The 15 BM points are mainly to swap every 15 seconds, you can do it without any point into BM, just not as handy.
Aggro on this game is simply weird, seems completely random.
I tend to find that if I attack first, the mobs will tend to aggro me. However, this only really happens when I’m using my greatsword. If I’m using a ranged weapon stuff tends to focus my pet or me depending on the weather or something.
Jaguar is probably right up your alley.
He’s nicely vicious, and his F2 turns him invisible.
Supposedly toughness is a factor, with more toughness meaning more aggro. I don’t really know that for sure, but it’s worth playing with at least.
…I’ll admit, there kind of isn’t a good answer here. Pet aggro is currently managed with all the finesse’ of a claw crane. Given how different the aggro in this game operates because of the lack of the holy trinity, this was really an area of pet mechanics that was begging for an innovative approach.

I strongly recommend changing the keybind for your pet abilities from the F keys to something easier to reach.
Also, the key to performing well with pets is understanding your full aresnal of pet abilities and bringing the right pet to the right fight. Some fights you need some extra CC, some fights your pet will need to be extra tanky, and some fights it’s just better to have something that attacks from ranged.
A jaguar can bring some great dps, but if you have to pull your pet out to prevent it from dying frequently, then you’re losing more dps than you gain by having a glass cannon pet.
Threat mechanics vary but there are some rules of thumb. This (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Aggro) might be a good read for you.

Heh. Get to level 70+ and go to Orr. You’ll never have to worry about mobs running anywhere other than straight at you again.
