No real rare pets is a problem.
Well, there are certain pets you only -iirc- get as rewards for GW1 completion. But, overall, I do see your point, and it could be quite fun to have a subset of “exotic” pets to use as a long-term play goal.

I have to admit, I’d love to have my Rainbow Phoenix back. I miss that flamboyant rascal.
The way the pets are rare and given to Ranger is different from said “Rare pets” is WoW. In Warcraft, it’s a mob which is strong in general and you have to do some thing to tame it, but it’s in open world in general.
Back in GW2 there were some rare pets (some are still avalible via HoM), but they were more like rewards for completing certain challanges the game provided, the hard thing wasn’t the mob but spawning it. I believe they might want to follow this model in second game
