To be honest, if the rest of the traits we get new are like that… I mean, what the actual kitten. A grandmaster trait for something that should already work from the beginning? You don’t even need to dodge, simple sidestepping and you’re safe… For what does the longbow has this much range if it won’t work. Welcome to the ranger. When I look at the mesmer’s one, I’d like to puke. "The new trait for mesmers allows them to gain additional benefit when disrupting enemy skills. Power Block will be introduced to the Domination line and will change the recharge of an interrupted skill from 5 seconds to 10 seconds. "

This! I was beginning to think I was crazy because this is so baffling.

This feels like I’m getting hustled. Like I just bought a new vacuum cleaner that only turns on half the time and when I call customer support they say, “We have a fix for it, but in order to receive it, we need you to send us your favorite pet kitten.”

At least make the thing a major trait. It would only make sense if they really buffed longbow’s damage because as it is, my autoattack pales in comparison to other classes’ autoattacks.

The most frustrating thing is that they could have discussed this in the CDI and received feedback or something (because I really wonder if any of the balance team seriously plays ranger enough to have an idea of what the player who mains ranger experiences.)

You guys do know that in Guild Wars 1, it was difficult to hit someone at max. range with a bow in that game too. That’s why skills like read the wind in that game existed. It was Anet’s mistake for not giving that option from the start in GW2, but other than that…. why in the actual kitten do you think it should be different in this game?

Because the ranger is weak. Exceptionally weak. Especially with a bow. If rangers were the only class that was able to reliably hit people from range then good. Maybe they would be worth taking then!

I would mention that the Engineer can’t take advantage of all its Rifle traits either. Apparently that doesn’t matter, since you and other people on this thread let go of your common sense and let emotion take over.

Engy rifle sucks worse than ranger LB though…

Edit: Full disclosure, I made a rifle engy and my ranger almost always has a LB on switch.

Don’t knock it too much until we try it. Yeha sinking it behind a grandmaster is frustrating, but it’s an improvement. I almost feel like they listened to my suggestion some when I suggested something like this a while back. I just wish they would consider also my suggestion for adding a function to the AA that is built into the longbow itself where you can hold down the button for a longer range and higher damage shot (but it would only be that one shot, pretty much like drawing back a real bow for a long distance, well aimed shot).

If you’re going 30 in Marks, you’re taking signet of the beastmaster. It doesn’t even compare. If you don’t have signet of beastmaster, you’re not beating any thief. This should have been a skirmishing trait.

Totally disagree with this. Typical thief encounter, see thief in distance, he stealths, you estimate time for him to get in backstab or C&D and sword 2 away. Immobilize him and in the same instant you hit him for half his health he breaks out. He shadowsteps to you, you dodge away and knock him down. He gets up and either your pet CCs him a final time and he dies or he stealths and you’ve already started rapid fire. He reappears somewhere downed.

There are like 5 other choose your own adventures I can do with this but you get the idea. It’s always berserker vs berserker and thieves are not good at that vs ranger.

who knows, maybe the skirmishing trait will be something along the lines of revealed on crit?

Also, yes i totally agree that SotBM is better by far, but think about it, your strongest “anti thief” weapon is LB 2. Currently the thief can just strafe sideways and 6/10 shots misses. With this trait, 10/10 should hit unless the thief actually dodges.

Oh come on now, someone posted a thread of what class you most like to engage in WvW roaming and thief was number 1. They’re one trick ponies. It’s not theorycrafting, it’s how it goes down because thieves have a predictable pattern. I’m sure many will relate.

I have never been able to get TS or video recording to work on my computer, but if no one vouches for me on this I will make a serious effort to video me killing thieves 1v1, because it’s important to me to show LB rangers are roaming-viable.

Edit: And I am talking about the backstab thieves. I refuse to acknowledge the existance of perma stealth thieves. I will even go so far as to WP away from them.

D/D thieves are just as bad. You can’t kite a good one because they will just CnD off the pet. They aren’t impossible to beat but a ranger with base armor and 15k health isn’t going to cut it. Not when I can still take 6-7k backstabs and 4k heartseekers with 2800-2900 armor.

People like engaging thieves because they are hard to kill 1v1. It’s a metric of one’s skill. No one is going to vote for cheese bunker roamers because those fights are long and boring and more about who traited for better sustain than who played the best.

Video isn’t working for me, but I don’t see how invulnerability is better than LRs, if this is the typical basilisk venom. I see a ton of ranger roamer videos not using it, and I would never dare to as a berserker. Pure suicide.

Also, I’m a little weird in that I don’t roam for the fights, I roam for the server. So I have cons, stacks, and guard buffs up, and now defensive infusions on all ascended gear. If I can cheap shot someone I will!

15k health isn’t going to cut it. Not when I can still take 6-7k backstabs and 4k heartseekers with 2800-2900 armor.

I roam with almost 23k health in full berserker, but I promise you someone can post a video of them killing a backstab thief in 15k berserker armor. Edit: IIRC it’s actually 17k, but whatever.

We already have a few traits for the longbow in the markmanship line.

IMHO the trait eagle eye and piercing arrows should be merged together and both moved to master trait. After the patch, the new GM trait will conflict with eagle eye or piercing arrows. Many of us know that if you play longbow you have to take both traits in order to make the weapon actually useful.

And lets be honest, merging those 2 traits would really not be op. Remove the 5% damage modifier if you want and there we go.

In the context of our existing trait lines, it feels like a step in the wrong direction. As a long time ranger main, I am praying that it’s a sign of a major trait restructure.

That said, others are right. Don’t panic/freak out until the patch hits and we see what we actually get.

No. The trait shouldn’t help only 1 small aspect of the class. Longbow. The guards don’t get 3000 HP when they only have a shield out.

It should help the class as a whole, not 1 tiny part of it. I don’t use a longbow. Ever. This trait is pointless to me.

Well you have to take other considerations into account before you say 300 vitality is amazing.

For instance..Would anyone here actually use a 300 vitality trait if it would put into Wilderness Survival?

I know i wouldn’t, for the same reason I don’t use Barkskin, because Empathetic Bond is that needed…So while that 300 Vitality trait is good, Guardians might actually have something completely better they could get

Merging Eagle Eye and Piercing Arrows would go a long way towards helping the sorry state our longbow is in currently. They could even remove the 5% damage modifier as you suggest and add it back to Read the Wind. Although, for a GM trait that only affects the longbow I would think an added 10% damage modifier would be better.

Sorry, wasn’t clear, I was saying THREE THOUSAND HEALTH was better than us getting a slightly acceptable autoattack, not disagreeing.

Also in zerg WvW the arrow speed doesn’t matter, which denigrates it even further. In PvP, the biggest application would be sitting on top of a cliff in Silent Storm, but you wouldn’t need it there anyway because your team mate is on the point and the opponent can’t sidestep.

I think the description on our amazing new trait is more acuratetly:

Ranger: Your arrows are slow and underpowered, and in most scenarios they are not as fast as they need to be and your enemies can walk sideways to avoid them easily. With Marksmanship’s new Read the Wind, you can sacrifice signet affects, damage, and range so your longbow arrows will fire at twice their base velocity, allowing for acceptable accuracy at medium range when you are bearbowing.

first this is a thread about ranger not about engis.
i did not write that ranger is the only class who has that problem. its just uncool too have too many traits for one weapon. my opinion and nothing more.
and at last dont write something like that to me that it looks like i am a typical ranger qq whiner. i am not.

i tried lb in pvp today
i have not the feeling that this gm is needed. the arrow is fast enough and the problem that projectiles are easy to evade are a general problem. just look at guard scepter AA its very easy to evade with moving side by side.
all in all this gm is okay. nice trait and maybe too fast imo but other traits in this line are better to choose.spotter for teamplay. piercing arrows for “cleaving” in wvw or anti minion builds and SotBM for pvp/zerg rushing. eagle eye in general but i like this trait since headstart ao its my opinion.

So after reading the CDI and getting feedback about how this is a pet based class and not an archer from developers, we are now moving towards being an archer instead of a pet based class? I feel like you guys as developers should be less confused than the players who didn’t create the classes. This sounds like the worst possible skill ever at this tier, aside from the other already terrible ones unless I’m missing something.

I see no reason for them to withhold that info if it is indeed the case. So I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high.

It has looooong since stopped having that damage boost when in pvp though.

This will work exactly as Read the Wind does in GW1 pvp and will be just as unused and boring as it is there.

The fact that they literally copy pasted this skill should tell people about how much thought went into it.

It’s like they saw that using “A” and “D” to dodge arrows was a problem and just decided to solve it the same exact way they did in a game where you couldn’t attack and move at the same time and trolling a Ranger meant you couldn’t use skills.

If you can’t tell how effective a trait that halves the flight time of arrows is then you need more hours on a ranger.

For months we have strugled to get some attention to the ranger we have begged anet to fix the ranger and make us on par with the other classes. Finnaly we are heard and it looked like there was some hope, but then half way trough the Ranger CDI we realized anet has no clue about how to fix the ranger and they actualy care very little.
They promised a fix and some decency.

Then they are tryng to fix the longbow arrow being slow problem with a fudging grandmaster trait? It shouldnt even be a trait it should be implemented right in without being a trait. Now we have to use trait points to fix a ’’bug’’? And the trait itself is so bad its insulting. This whole thing is insulting compared to what other classes get.. The ele gets a healing that will make them the most wanted in dungeons and mesmers getting a cooldown increasing skill that is going to be so overpowered that people understood how bad it is by just reading it. Longbow arrows being faster is not going to fix how bad the ranger is. So yes am i mad? Im super mad.

I wasn’t being sarcastic. watching videos like that reminds me of how poor the ranger performs in wvw and how fun it would be to own face and troll people.

Markmanship has enough good traits and read the wind will have less Impact
Which two traits should we choose from Piercing arrows, spotter, eagle eye, signet of beastmaster and read the wind? to have 3 longbows trait in a line where we only can choose 2 is not clever. and as we can see in the Picture to see how the new System Looks, we can see percing arrows, spotter and eagle eye are still there

I would mention that the Engineer can’t take advantage of all its Rifle traits either. Apparently that doesn’t matter, since you and other people on this thread let go of your common sense and let emotion take over.

Why do I get the feeling that you were upset when Ranger was chosen over Engi for the CDI

first this is a thread about ranger not about engis.
i did not write that ranger is the only class who has that problem. its just uncool too have too many traits for one weapon. my opinion and nothing more.
and at last dont write something like that to me that it looks like i am a typical ranger qq whiner. i am not.

Its just freaking hilarious that people are complaining that we now have to decide on what bow traits to bring, when other professions have been doing it since the game released.

i tried lb in pvp today
i have not the feeling that this gm is needed. the arrow is fast enough and the problem that projectiles are easy to evade are a general problem. just look at guard scepter AA its very easy to evade with moving side by side.
all in all this gm is okay. nice trait and maybe too fast imo but other traits in this line are better to choose.spotter for teamplay. piercing arrows for “cleaving” in wvw or anti minion builds and SotBM for pvp/zerg rushing. eagle eye in general but i like this trait since headstart ao its my opinion.

The problem with projectiles being easy to evade by moving out of the way has existed since Guild Wars 1. Its never going to change. Giving Rangers this new trait does makes it alot easier to hit someone at 1500 range (by taking eagle eye)

Another thing to consider is that you can now change traits out of combat whenever you want. So, if you are roaming, then suddenly join a zerg, and find that you need piercing arrows instead of eagle eye, or you want the damage boost, but you are close enough range where double projectile speed isn’t needed, you can switch traits on demand for free, and do it (out of combat)

There is not a situation I can think of where I need all 3 bow traits in Marksmanship anyways. Piercing arrows is going to be used at close range where it is more effective, which means that Read the Wind won’t even be of much use. You guys need to actively decide how to maximize your build now instead of just taking all the traits you can and running with it.

With the new changes coming, I can literally take a Gear set for Roaming, and a Gear set for Zerging, and a Gear set just to screw with, and while it will take about a minute to fully switch (because there is no saved builds in this game), its still a thousand times more convenient than it was before!

I don’t like Piercing Arrows with Longbow currently, I like it with Shortbow more – I’m more likely to tag more people with Shortbow.

So if I wanted to go for a Longbow trait arrangement, Piercing Arrows would get the kick. And I didn’t trait for Signet of the Beastmaster anyway, so giving up something I didn’t have is fine with me.

Seeking assistants for the Asuran Catapult Project. Applicants will be tested for aerodynamics.

I’m actually quite annoyed about that change. Having to change build immediately before a fight sounds like uneccessary micro management.

You don’t have to change anything if you don’t want to. It’s an option.

You don’t have to change anything if you don’t want to. It’s an option.

It’s as optional as changing your utilities before a new fractal, i.e., not optional if you’re a team player. HOPEFULLY and almost CERTAINLY they will add templates like they did in GW1.
