Thanks solrik. We finally got to fight. the rounds went fairly quick. Solrik was trying out a trap build that didnt work out to well, mainly because imo traps are just weak overall. Hopefully we have a rematch soon though.

It was an SB build with Spike + Flame trap and LR + Entangle, both with the CD reduction traits. Tried to find a build that works with SB but I’ve given up now…

I might suggest, solrik, that SB just doesn’t suit your playstyle at all, hense your problems with it.

A trap build should be a fair counter to Bakkeys build since he can’t actually do much damage at all beyond ~300 range. If you had Rabid gear, Sb, Flame and Frost trap it should be relatively easy to just stay at range for a large portion of the fight and wear him down, which is the whole point of a Trap / SB setup. It’s not a condition burst, it’s a slow kiting picking away whilst keeping out of their reach, as oppose to an A/T+S/D setup with geomancy sigils (like his build) which is all about getting up in someones face and bursting them.

If thats how you like to play then SB is never going to work for you, because thats not what it offers.

There is unfortunately no space in pvp that is good for SB because a wall or boundary is quickly reach.

I will, however, say that I use a SB and S/D for roaming in wvw and it works, but it has it’s reason. First, the build uses rabid gear and condition duration weapons together with krait runes to achieve 100% bleeding duration. Utilities are 3 traps (not poison) and Rao pluss TU. It works because the bleed applied is too much to handle and anyone who comes close gets eaten by traps while they see me rolling with the sword and fly away after a while only to switch to SB and restart the rotation.

In pvp, I can’t get 100% bleed duration, eat the 40% duration food, fly great distances and no cond duration weapons.

(I’m one of those who kite by moving directly away from the enemy by strafing left/right, not backwards)

Well, I guess that’s my point then. Even in WvW you are using the SB in a burst setup just trying to nail someone with insanely long bleeds and all 3 traps and then “tactically retreating” with the Sword and hoping the conditions are too much to handle, rather than staying on the SB and giving them the run around.

Perhaps it was a little arrogant of me to say “this is THE way to play SB” before because you know… who am I to say :P … so this is just my opinion, but there it is. Just stick to whichever weapon you do feel works for you. For me, it is the SB. I am comfortable fighting anyone on any build with it, but I don’t really like fighting people with a GS unless they are melee as well. Everyone has their thing ^^

I updated the original post with ItIsFinished’s handicap suggestions at his request. I think they’re pretty reasonable. Is the no armor thing really still a thing for PvP? I thought the builds had been condensed only in to amulets, and you could no longer take your armor off for PvP?

I usually only switched to sword when I started healing myself and the evades gave me some “free health” as I call it. But it was in no way a burst build but a constant bleed.
This was over 5 months ago though and I haven’t really roamed a notable amount of time. (Stopped playing because I got bored of it. The constant running was boring (don’t mix that with “constant deaths” ) and I hate zerging mainly because there are too many “average players”, as anet calls them. But the loot from an organised zerg is heaven!)

I really hoped this event would become something that lasts but it seems like people have no interest, for some reason.

Maybe if we created some site for it? Then we could redirect people in the game

I’m extremely interested and would love to take on the NA champ (dueling ItsFinished is always infinitely entertaining haha).

Unfortunately, I have busy college student “team no sleep” problems 24/7 and log on for very brief (only a few hours at a time compared to my old 6+ hour a day gameplay) periods of off NA hours time late at night after I’ve finished all of my work.

Still, I can try to find the time, because I love the concept and the idea, so I’ll work it out this week.

Oh, on a “rules and observations” note, I personally love the idea of the build restrictions as to what can be changed, it adds the very specific strategy of allowing the option to go with a build the most directly counters the current King/Queen, however, upon a “dethroning,” that build may be so specific and particular that it has glaring weaknesses elsewhere.

Observation wise, people should pay particular attention to that detail. There is a King/Queen build posted in this thread that is extremely well suited to the rules and is setup as a “jack of all trades” build, and I’d imagine he is pretty well aware of that fact since his build is setup with almost no weaknesses to speak of when we’re talking ranger vs ranger specific matchups (not meaning that it’s unbeatable, but it’s certainly designed to turn any duel into a “skill matters” fight, and also not insinuating that any person having lost is a lesser skilled player as the builds versatility plays a definitive part in its success).

SO, I’ll try to work something out with you ItsFinished, you and are at least both more free in the evenings. If anybody else gets around to that beforehand though, be my guest, I’m just submitting my interest!

Very good duels, SadKeanu.3491. It was close both fights. I’m not sure what build he was running. It completely threw me off as I was getting pegged hard by his axes. It almost looked like he was stacking Might with axe auto’s. Anyway, I can already tell that handicaps are going to bring down any king off of their hill fast.

Well ItsFinished and I had our matchup, and let me tell you guys, it was something! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think the handicaps determined the outcome of the matchup, and I’d advise everybody to take a look at his build because Celestial Longbow is not to be trifled with after what I experienced.

However, formalities and respect aside (because I could probably go on for a very long time with the flattery lol), I walked away victorious from the fight (and I’ll have to duel him more with no handicaps once I refine my build).

Do I regret a particular weapon choice? Absolutely, but I set out to prove to myself that the shortbow is in a good place. Whether it is or not, well, I wasn’t entirely happy with it’s performance, but we’ll see going forward! (my immediate thoughts after some for funsies duels with the build was that Axe/Dagger Sword/Torch would have been an infinitely better decision and is my personal more comfortable set).

So, I will be the current NA champ! However, let’s give it up for ItsFinished, who was more than likely defeated more by handicaps! Though he made me very happy with myself that I have keybound the store weapon function (anybody looking at our two builds will understand what I mean).

Anyhow, let the challenging commence! I will do my best to accommodate peoples play times, but I will warn everybody I’m an evening to late night EST NA player, and binge play Destiny on the weekends when I go home to enjoy the get away from the crappy lifestyle that is trying to sleep on a campus mattress (though I will make the effort on the weekends to support the thread! )

It was a match well played! A full melee build that was way outside the comfort zone of most of us ranger players, I will always respect the bold players who push the boundaries of what builds we run to find the hidden gems we aren’t using!

My build was a bit of a mistake, but not in a way that would have meaningfully affected the duel. I was accidentally using a soldiers amulet and dolyak runes with not enough condi removal. I meant to use SotF, bark skin and berserkers, which is often my normal roaming build, but the accidental build was definitely viable if not what I was expecting!

Edit: Oh, jcbroe, don’t forget to bold your NA KING title and put some blank lines above and below your throne posts, so people can quickly spot it.

Congrats to jcbroe for taking the hill! It was tough with two handicaps and was totally expected to be a hard match. Being my 7th opponent, I had two handicaps and ended up dueling him with this build. No Sigils and only 12 Trait points. Picking a handicap for myself was a real challenge. Knowing that I would have to carry it over to my next opponent(if I had one).

But either way, it was a lot of fun. I met a lot of good Rangers in game and got to play with a few old friends. I think the funnest part about this King of the Hill challenge is coming up with builds that counter the current King’s build. Other rangers get a chance to “try their build” so to speak. And all the Rangers that are looking for builds or even the seasoned Rangers that might see something with someones build and spark an idea for something new and fresh.

I mean other than to prevent the same guy staying winner forever if we imagine someone could, I know it’s meant to be lighthearted fun to see new innovative builds rather than a tourney to see who’s the best but the handicap kinda defeats that purpose if you ask me, wouldn’t it be better not to have that we might actually find some new build that proves unbeatable (by other rangers)

you answered your own question in the first sentence. it not about finding which is the most OP because typically a good play in a bad build will bet a bad player in a good build anyway.

It’s about having fun, being inventive, and an excuse get petty/trolly over something that don’t actually matter. If one person gets to the hill stays there permanently then this adventure would die and loose its fun very quickly.

You and BadKeanu both challenged me (he messaged me in game) around the same time frame, so I mean, being for fun and all, I’ll talk with him and basically, I’ll see if you guys want to go by whoever’s time zones line up first.

The Spirit of Spirits was Spiriting and left me spirited….. Spirited Away? (seriously netflix, why you no have my favorite movies).

It was spirits versus spirits (if the last few statements were too nonsensical to understand the gist)! Fight fire with fire, very strategically intelligent move! Shortbow versus Shortbow as well! It was like a scene right out a Rocky movie, just swinging away at each other, trying to take the other guy (girl/etc) down.

It was a fun fight, and very entertaining to meet another fellow ranger in game my friends list is starting to fill up with you all now (outside of being a semi-recent addition to Wind NA).

Let’s keep it going! SadKeanu is still on the challenger list, but playing time frames are playing time frames, so still accepting challenges!

I really enjoyed my duels with jcbroe this evening – thanks for taking my ranger forum KotH virginity (am I allowed to say that? we shall see)!

I didn’t really do my research to see what build jcbroe had to stay using as king, so came in with what I’ve been running for Solo Q’s recently, which was this valkyrie BM variant:

It was a titanic battle without a doubt – our builds both had a lot of sustain.
The fight moved back and forth (with one falling lower little by little) until I got a lucky heal interrupt from a hasted doggy that changed the balance of attrition just enough that I could whittle him down!

For the second round I swapped to a slightly more damage focussed build (as I don’t think my heart would have stood up to another full length duel as intense as the first!) – this build:

As you can see, they were minor changes, and although the second duel was far quicker it was still anyones game. At one point jcbroe was all of a second or two from killing my pet, which would have likely meant my loss.

Afterwards we had an enjoyable time duelling more, chatting, and trying out different options. I look forward to both playing with and against jcbroe more in the future – thanks for the fights mate!

Also, I would love to duel the EU king of the hill, but even though I’ve played this game since launch, (and main a ranger) I’m still a kitten ranger, haha! Maybe when I get a bit better.

Yup there is. You not supposed to change builds for all 3 fights. Presumably no harm no foul, here. Although if you can get Jcbroe to throw a temper tanturm about it, I would pay good money for that.

That build you’re locked in to is almost identical to my normal dueling build. I run mine with celestial, and just a few minor other differences.

The most number of defenses so far is roughly the amount of people we’ve had participate for either region. If we start getting 50 people playing per region, we can always up the number of defenses before a handicap.

While I agree with you 100% Manekk, it seems that people may become uninterested in trying out if someone is on the hill for 10-15+ defenses. Plus, this way, it gives others a chance to get the Hill, even if its for one opponent due to the handicap introduction.

But at the same time, Fluffball brings up a good point. If more rangers become interested, maybe he can bump up the amount of defenses before requiring a handicap.

ItIsFinished defended 7 times I think it was, which was pretty much everyone who is involved on the NA side.

Edit: Oh, did you just mean it from a vocab perspective? I’ve been involved with and watch a ton of MMA and boxing my whole life. I’m actually not sure how common the term “title defense” is in ‘normal’ lingo.

Well ended up having lots of duels against theses two. Vaniity was running a very similar build so they were quite close. Solrik tried out lots of things so he probably has more to on it.

Also my bit on the handicap, I kind of think it defeats the idea if you win not because of the build you made to counter but because the other person had not armor or something. But maybe make it optional for the challenger to choose if you really want in?

Well, we’re getting more and more people playing, so I’m going to bump the handicap up to 8 instead of 5. That’s up for debate, but I’ll update the main post for now.

I definitely think it needs to stay at some level. This is only fun if we have a revolving door of builds, not if one guy just outplays everyone on the entire forum.

Yeah, the duel with Siroso was pretty intense. Not that I think I’m the best player ever, but his build immediately highlighted the limitations of my own, and confirmed a few things I had on my mind going into the KotH challenge:

• Survival of the Fittest with Lightning Reflexes and Entangle alongside Signet of Renewal is enough condition cleansing to counter other rangers (not necessarily other condi classes like Engis and Necros, but there is certainly a possibility there)
• Shortbow does not do enough damage on it’s own to kill a sustain capable, bunker stylized build unless the person makes more than one or two mistakes

Those factors out of the way, I couldn’t have asked for a happier defeat! Against an uncommon (at the very least unpopularized) build no less. I won’t give away ALL of the secrets (not sure if they are secrets, but still, no unfair advantages haha), but I will say that I was both surprised and impressed with it’s capabilities.

I will admit that during the heat of the moment, he actually pushed me to my performance limit, both with the match up fights and the few for fun duels we had afterwards when I switched things up…..
…..Which is exciting! I already have a few ideas on what I could have done differently and the optimal build to play, BUT, I still need to get hands on with his playstyle to figure out the exact limitations of the build (given my own current skill cap as a factor).

Siroso, the meta-killer (I’m sticking by my word hahaha), I do have one request! Please message SadKeanu in game and give him the first chance you can at a duel. He was one of the first people to ask me but our time zones didn’t match up and in the spirit of keeping the activity going and not putting it on hold, I played first come, first serve when I was available.

So please play him as soon as you can! He will have been waiting patiently more than long enough.

Good fights against Cufu. He did well with the traps , one of the better trap rangers i’ve seen. we did some more duels after where he went power which were a lot closer.

I’ll say I have not often had the pleasure of duelling other decent (/better) Rangers so I learned a lot I think the main thing being zerker builds really dont work well VS other Rangers… even if I am able to maintain a lot of distance during the fight (which against Bakeyy was certainly not all that easy) that bird following you around hitting 2k+ none stop just breaks you. So for Ranger duels I cant recomend zerker LB xD

Other than that I’d just say Bakeyy is extremely good I like his build and it’s obviously strong, but I think it’s his play which is the main issue. Even if I copied his build I am certain I would not beat him. So, very well played

And Solrik, well played too. Our duels were a little more experimental so you hard a rough time at first when trying out new builds and I had a rough time at the end when trying out things, but thanks for the fun and learning

This has been the best thing for me in this thread. Before these fights I can’t off the top of my head think of a ranger I lost to in a not-almost-dead-to-camp-NPCs sort of fight. And I’ve gone a very mediocre 4-win 4-loss in this, which I’m loving.

Gotta get whooped a few times. We’ve got some really fantastic rangers using all sorts of different builds.

A/D + S/T is so much fun to just smash buttons with. You almost can’t go wrong with 2 energy sigils, weapon swapping on recharge, and evading everything all the time forever.

…..Which is exciting! I already have a few ideas on what I could have done differently and the optimal build to play, BUT, I still need to get hands on with his playstyle to figure out the exact limitations of the build (given my own current skill cap as a factor).

Siroso, the meta-killer (I’m sticking by my word hahaha), I do have one request! Please message BadKeanu in game and give him the first chance you can at a duel. He was one of the first people to ask me but our time zones didn’t match up and in the spirit of keeping the activity going and not putting it on hold, I played first come, first serve when I was available.

So please play him as soon as you can! He will have been waiting patiently more than long enough.

So my quest for king will be put on hold for now. This is an awesome event/community and I am saddened I can’t participate in it anymore. Oh well, you win some, you lose some and then you get banned for no apparent reason lol. I look forward to dueling with you guys.. at some point?! hopefully haha.

The first match was very even, we both went down and both rallied at the same time, but in the end Bakey got the win. Second and third duels were better for me when I got used to his build and I got him downed.

Edit:
Duels against BolshoiBooze were fun, but he hasn’t been playing for a while so he was still a bit rusty and I got him downed.
Duels against Joppelius were interesting, both duels we ended up both in downed state but he made a mistake and called the pet from ressing him and I got the stomp. During second duel we both got up and I managed to down him again.
(If I remembered these correctly, we dueled more with Joppelius for fun and the fights were always pretty even)

I’ll fight you with the same build

I changed my mind… I’ll come up with something

I just don’t want to use the same build again and again and again…

It is Very Tempting to join in with this King of the hill , Though i am Very Rusty at Dualing have not done a Dual since gw1.

I’d like to see if this could work, I don’t Solo que regularly, the only time I’ve done Pvp is with my guildies so i may get my backside owned a few times before im back upto speed with dualing again.

Back in gw1, the guild im in Mantle Assasins then and now we moved over from gw1 and going strong for our 9th year anniversary.

we Ran an King of the hill style comp to dual other people for our Guilds masters title and it was the job of the master to teach new and old members tips/tricks and skill pointers (for that class)

I held it for a year and honestly i love the idea of Handicaps, with the guild masters title it gave me a lot of Knowledge as i battled vs every build my guildies threw at me every time i made a new build back then , some times it was So grueling I cried a little over team speak trying to kill a Wonderlust Ritualist build, So glad they added Stabiliy in gw2.

thats the past though , Maybe This might get my flames going again.

perfect time to catch me any time wednesday/thursday 5pm onwards and the weekends mostly sunday is when gw has my full Attention not doing Guild events.

i hope to use this If i can i’ll be using this build, im kind of experimenting , My fav stat currently is a Cavalier type build , so im hoping this hybrid might do well as its crit damage is quite powerful while complementing the tankiness of Cavalier stats/Sotf.

I saw Siroso online tonight, but it was exactly at WvW reset and he was in a borderland so I figured it wasn’t a good time for a challenge. I’m coming for you though, in whatever order.
