More importantly – can pets be optional.
I really don’t see the need for a pet and I shouldn’t be forced to have one. Every time I try to hide him or her it magically reappears. I try not to feed it, it is still with me. I run as fast as I can away from it, it magically reappears. I kick, scream, and get it killed. BAM – pet is by my side again.
I really don’t want a pet nor do I see the reasoning behind it. Is this because WoW hunters have pets? If I wanted a pet I’d go the local shelter and get one or put a collar on my husband.

Choosing the Pet class and complaining about a pet being there…. seriously?

If the pet is under performing/limiting the ‘pet class’ then there will be complaints about it. They poorly implement the pet system and the it is currently too much work to fix so where does that leave the profession?

That’s true, but why should it be more important for THE pet class ingame (implementation of it aside) to make pets optional, than giving the Ranger a proper working Pet?

This. If you make a pet class where the pet is crap, you have every right to complain about it. In GW2, the implementation is so bad that some people would rather have nothing rather than a weak pet. If you’re going to leave a major part of the class as crap, then IMO at least make it optional.

You have the right to complain, but you shouldn’t complain abut the fact that the pet class has to use a pet, but about the implementation of said pet.
All i say is that if you do not even want to use a pet you should not pick the class that is designed around a pet (again it’s of no interest whether it’s good or bad at that Point). You can complain about the viability of the pet but you shouldn’t complain about the existence of a Pet when you choose to Play the pet class

Anet has ha years to fix the pets, at this point I think people can complain about whatever they want.

Actually, me being a wise @ss aside, I meant to say can pets be optional?
What if I don’t want a pet but want to use the LB/SB and range? Serious question.
And why is it a pet class? I would have thought it is more of a range class that uses a bow and arrow. I very well could be incorrect in my understanding of the class (I did not play gw1) but I just assumed it was a range class.

In Gw1 you could decide, that’s true, but for GW2 it was announced as the class with the Pet as their special Mechanic. I did not ask them why they did that x). But with upcoming Specialisations your wish might come true with one of the ones to come, or they’ll end up giving the ranger another mechanic and druid gets pet, we’ll have to wait . But as it stands Ranger is the Pet class of this game and i doubt they will make it optional any time soon, since it’s a part of the class and we would cripple the effectiveness of our class (fights vs thiefs and probably dungeons aside)
HA, know i even have a question: Will both, Ranger and Druid, have the Pet as their Mechanic or will the Ranger, since we saw the Druid having a Sidekick, get a new Mechanic)

That’s true, but why should it be more important for THE pet class ingame (implementation of it aside) to make pets optional, than giving the Ranger a proper working Pet?
I’ve never said anything about the removal/making them optional I am just stating that there are reasons for them to complain about them and that ANet doesn’t want to use the resources to really get the pets to up to the functionality that is needed for the kind of game they have created.
Not too long after launch I posted my view on the pets that the Developers are in bad place where the profession is as if the pet performs at a level where it is not a detriment to the player they risk the perception that the ranger as been given a “easy button” especially with the focus on the cluster that is spvp (which seemed to be the driving focus of skill/trait balance with little/no consideration for PvE nor WvW).
The end result is a profession where the effort to effect ratio is no where near a good place and even after putting the time to ‘master’ the profession could be generally put towards a profession with a higher skill floor and ceiling that rewards the players effort to effect.

Crap did, not you and i said that you have all freedom to complain about the viability of the pets. I just meant that i don’t see the Point in making the “unique” feature our class is based and even balanced around optional and that if you want optional pets you should not have chosen the class that is meant to have this kind of sidekick… a stupid and sometimes utterly annoying sidekick, but it’s mine and i like it >:(.
Edit: Problem is, i think that Anet does actually not have the Resources to make such major AI changes in a balance update.

It was me It was a serious question and it was answered – lol. I’m content.
I main a Guardian but really like the Ranger since I’ve been playing it. I can see the pet mechanic with range but melee, not so much. Then again per my post above I never played GW1 so don’t know the classes history much. In my mind it seems like it should be optional and I was also blaming another MMO’s similar class. Again, probably wrong.
Be that as it may when I read the OP’s post that was the first thing that came to mind. Since I don’t have any other questions maybe I’ll just hush up and stop causing the drama

Exactly. If you can’t make the pet not suck after 2.5 years then i think they ought to try making the pet a utility skill and buff/nerf appropriately. The replacement class mechanic could be something based on flanking & evading for example.
As everyone seems to agree that the pet mechanic is below par..
Will the ranger shouts ever be as usefull as the warrior’s and guardian’s? And speaking of shouts, will the radius of Nature’s Voice always be pathetic? Or will the ranger’s lack of support simply be ignored with the addition of the druid?
(edited by Lazze.9870)
they absolutely KNOW that we want pets to be reworked. they know this from the CDI. to say the least, im extremely curious about the new mechanic. but it wont resolve problems for other builds.
Tell them to fix ranger Pets.
Tell them to give ranger more survival skills like Warrior or thief or ele or any other class in the game…
Tell them why they still haven’ t done it
Tell them that if they don’ t do anything me and many other rangers won’ t buy the expansion.
Tell them why in the point of interest shows they NEVER use ranger and why they ALWAYS play warrior?^
Thank you

That and I did not choose the pet class, i chose the bowman class. Ranger is the only class that can use both bows and also has the feel of a bowman, rather than a tactical nuker tank machine or a teleporting circus act (warrior and thief).
Is happening within walking distance of me. I don’t think I’m going to go because it seems like it will be focused almost entirely on the revenant. If I do go or if I go to a bar and the devs are there, is there any magical 1 ranger question we want to know?
What’s the name of the utility line that druids get? Ie spirits are labled spirits, survival etc.
i’d ask for something more complicated, but i highly doubt they’d answer anything like that xD.

Thank for the only reasonable suggestion, and not “kittening elbow the devs in the face until they admit their lil kittenes that can’t make AI.”
It might be stretching it, because as indicated with the POI that showed off the Revenant, we have no way of even knowing whether or not the specializations have been fully fleshed out yet.
Still, assuming they are able to talk about it and it is at/passed the point in design; is the staff geared more towards range or melee?
I’d be very curious if they are envisioning it as a more up close weapon or if it will be more like a guardians staff, or even a casting staff.
Still, to ask for a direct detail like that before they have officially announced it is probably a stretch, and Durz’s question is honestly one you could “slip in” better without red flagging any NDA remarks lol.

I’d also ask (and probably beg for the information), if any of our tankier pets cough BEARS! cough will get access to taunt.

Perhaps those neutral beetles in the Silverwastes are a hint at that, since the enemy AI versions have high invulnerability.
It would be mostly useless for dungeons, but it would actually be really strong for PvP!
1 Magical Question?
“When will Rangers be really competitive?”
“A man chooses; a slave obeys.” | “Want HardMode? Play Ranger!”
Rangers are competitive. Dont know where u have been in the meantime. Keyword is “really” here. What do u mean with that? Press one button and everything is down? If u expect ranger to be a compilation of all the best skills of other classes, u need to wake up.

Well there is always keeping your fingers crossed that one of the specialization will fulfill your need for an archer. The archetype was one of the pieces off the cutting room floor that (along with warden and I would guess beastmaster) that (mal)formed the ranger as we have it, but I would guess doesn’t fit as a concept that they wanted for their game.
I’ve actually been thinking they may make a warrior or thief specialization into the “hunter” or “archer” some people seem to want. Those too classes already are basically petless rangers, but apparently people get hung up on the name when I’ve mentioned that in the past. A norn “hunter” specialized warrior that uses longbow and axe dagger or something would fill the classic D&D hunter role just fine.

I don’t feel so. T2 (Piken Square) WvW and I see both our and enemy rangers fail so hard.
My main is also a Ranger; In the past months there been much more players who had seriously OP builds that just can’t be beaten. I believe the long-not-fixed server lag also helps them not getting my damages, but I can tell you that they’we been fighting with much less effort than me (basicly just skillchaining and build does all defense), in our minimal range advantage they just outheal/outrun, and mantaining this range is also impossible after a quick while. Let’s turn to melee, GS, their buffs and conditions creep me out and there is no heal skill for rangers to deal with them in close range fights. With well synced dodges and interrupts, they still draining my HP much better while just standing still, a dumb gameplay. Because their builds are OP to save them.
It’s not THAT terrible, just annoying when rangers fighting with effort and there is no feel of being powerful at all – maybe we just need better healing skills for first… ‘cuz they’re crap.
