POLL: a ranger introspective
Not too many responses so far, but already starting to see that yeah, the meta really is affecting you guys, too!
Anyway, things have been updated with the new URLs (seeing as I’m at a PC and not on a smartphone this time), as well as a link to the results.
Comments are welcome, and yes, changes can be made to introduce new questions or content I (likely) overlooked.
Is it any surprise Wilderness Survival rates so high? Apart from Healing spring (traited or not)- this line is now is where 9/10ths of our condi cleanse is…. and only in this trait line.
Kinda forces you to pick that one.

More to do with the fact that they cleanse condis on top of other things. Your utility slots truly bring utility when you trait for survival skills. Most of our other skills don’t do that.
great poll,
Thanks for taking the time of putting it together.
Nice poll. Covered nearly everything.
Tifa Ran/Ranger with a Pet
Commander WvW – Henge of Denravi
One thing that bothers me about the class is much of its defense is geared around being fleet of foot but even if you are just targeted and not hit by an enemy your running pace will slow and often the pet is more like an anchor slowing you down when it aggro’s onto something.
Spirits? Just dump the entire line and and build something around the pet. Pets that offer different attacks and boons. maybe a mascot boost for parties?
The beastline tree can then be more about the animals toughness and health pool instead of being packed out with all the melee skills that should be in the skirmishing line instead like the name “skirmishing” implies…melee
Some rangers want to stay range fighters, and the short bow needs to deliver to fulfill that role. I wish they had got the rifle but what’s done is done.
Traps were more useful when we could throw them.
I’m not looking for an I win button, but the way everything is scrambled around the penalties are far greater for the ranger to select a template that offers a fair balance between offence and defense, than it is for my warrior or guardian, and that is even with a missing speed boost on the guard (except for the staff boost which is meh).
Its just laid out very badly by comparison in my humble opinion.
In WvW rangers should be able to use barrage from the walls like portable arrow carts. God knows I’ve seen rangers get taken out faster than an arrowcart and this is reasonable with barrage locking you into place as the special fires in order to deliver the shot.
The only other thing that I wish is that the poll was separated between competitive players and pve. Because in pve I can sacrifice skills that I can not survive without in pvp or wvw. Otherwise this was a very nice poll and I thank you for your time.

Personally, I’d like to see more options of improving the offensive capabilities of the pet in Beastmastery line, even if it meant nerfing the baseline damage of the pet. I run a beastmaster build that focuses on making sure that the pet hits, and that it hits hard, and I would like for the beastmastery specialization to actually allow me to specialize on making the beast more beastly and on mastering it. Now, I’m not saying that the spec should improve the damage dramatically from what it’s now, the pet can be quite lethal already, but I’d like to see more impact from the specialization on it.
Also, nice poll.

Not for PVE

Ironically i don’t take a single condi cleanse from WS, still run it like 24/7 though.

Survival Skills rule, New Spirits drool. Ranger Shouts are mediocre, don’t have much use in competitive play (except the ones that weren’t shouts before like Rampage as One and Heal as One). Traps are now too slow to activate and recharge.
Mainhand axe is a versatile weapon, but not good at either direct or condition damage. Offhand axe has some uses, but not being able to move while reflecting limits its usefulness in PvP. Shortbow is cool, but it needs to be more reliable at inflicting bleeding—having to hit your target from a specific angle is difficult. Longbow has been buffed enough. Greatsword is too slow to maintain damage output in PvP without using other skills or swapping weapons in between. Ranger harpoon gun has always been great, but spear maybe could use some buffs. Warhorn isn’t very useful and Hunter’s Call needs to be able to damage inanimate objects—why can’t it hit gates like other attack skills? Torch is okay. Dagger is pretty good.
Pets die quickly in zerg fights and the cooldown to swap is too slow. Pets need baseline condition damage and more aggressive features—in PvP they’re mostly just a nuisance to the enemy unless you’ve traited them to have full Pet Attributes.
Ranger is the best profession for evade skills, but why don’t we get more of them? And when we evade, we’re not doing (much) damage, just delaying it. Would be nice to have more evades and maybe control effects with the evades, and to have evades that last longer.

Hey marksmen! As requested by a user, here’s a version of the Thief poll for Rangers!
The goal here is to help aggregate your thoughts, feelings, and sentiments regarding the class, where it stands, and where you think it is (or should be) headed.
If there’s anything you not happy with or want changed, come on in and reply! Perfectly fine? Reply anyway; your voice matters just as much.

Done! Not bad for a survey, but a comments field is needed at the end.
Pretty thorough survey, and I can agree with some of the questions; but I feel some people have a poor understanding of the ranger class.
Like the questions about do you want more / less of such condition. I feel, now this is a personal opinion, that rangers should be:
The best at: bleed, cripple, poison. (Baseline in most weapon sets).
Very limited: burning, immobilize, weakness, blind. (Some skills ex. bonfire>burning).
One or two at max: daze, stun. (Trigger after meeting criteria ex. trait specific).
Zero: torment, fear, etc. (These feel like they belong to other classes).
I feel like all classes should follow some planning as above, but it feels as if all classes are getting every condition, etc., etc. Making each class feel less…unique. I feel people answered the survey going “Rangers don’t have any torment! Gimmi more!”, but, guys, that’s not really a ranger-ish theme.

My response to the torment thing is that I wouldn’t expect necromancers to have burning…but Dhuumfire.

To me, Torment is really the consummate Ranger condition because of its mechanic of dealing more damage when moving. Since Ranger is a kiting class, especially when using a bow, Torment fits perfectly with it thematically and mechanically. It is perfectly synergistic with Cripple for the same reasons. SB would be fantastic with Torment on Crippling shot in particular.
