I’m doing some map filling and playing the game super casually. I usually play axe+torch and longbow and might do events, new zone stuff, so I don’t need anything too complicated. When I go searching for builds as guides I find a lot of conflicting things. What suggestions might you guys on the forum have for me? Eh?

What do you want to change? Nobody cares what you do in open world PVE – there’s no one to impress. It’s strictly to your own tastes.

The builds you will find are usually targeted towards certain game modes in GW2. There are builds for fractals, speedclearing dungeons, pvp, wvw, and raids. If you know what the build is for, then you can better gauge what will be good for you. Note however that most of these are group content, so the builds are designed for group play, not soloing. What works well for one is not gonna work for another.

The reason the above comments are correct (if lacking in explanation) is because OW pve is much more forgiving, so that you can experiment with all the different weapons and skills of your profession. Unless you are planning to play any of the game modes I mentioned, I would suggest avoiding builds and just experimenting with different combinations of weapons, skills, class mechanics, pets, etc. Learning the different possibilities of the profession is more important than using the “correct” build. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to create the builds you need, and adjust them on the fly to compensate for group composition when you do decide to play in those game modes.

If you want a base for efficient killing, like doing world completion or exploring the new harder zones, the fractal build is a really good start. Just change it to whatever makes you happy and are comfy playing.

Otherwise, just toot around doing your thing.

You can play what you enjoy, and do just fine. It won’t stop you completing most of the content, even if it’s not a “good” build. (and if you find yourself short on something, adjust a little to fix the deficit.)

The biggest thing I’d note is that torch is all about condition damage, while longbow is about power damage, and MH axe is a mix of both. You might want to pick one or the other to focus on more, if you find your DPS is falling short of your needs.

Until you get to that point, though, that is a fine combination.

as others have mentioned, for open pve, anything will work. Some things are just faster to kill with then others. That said, I’d recommend going for either a power or a coni build. And picking weapons/armor/traits that fit your choise.

For Power, longbow (or staff) can be a ranged option, and sword/warhorn or sword/axe can be an melee option. The warhorn is imo nice due to swiftness
Armor stats can here be: berserker, or if you have problem surviving, something more tanky.

For condi, shortbow is a good ranged option, and axe/torch is nice for melee (or close to melee)
Armor stats can be viper. Worth knowing, condi duration food is alot more importent then any power food. A condi build simply get more out of using food then a power build, so even a cheap food is worth using if you pick a condi build.

Other things worth noting is buffs, it will generally always be worth using tiger (fury) as one of your 2 pets.

if you want to stick with lb, axe/torch and don’t have HoT,

with HoT,

Once you find a place to play most of the time, you will want a more specific build.
