Thanks for the vid Xsorus! I have enjoyed watching your ranger vids over the past few months so I’m a bit sad this is the final one. I was happy I finally got a chance to duel you and now with firsthand experience I gotta say you are a beast!

If it was, that kitten Entangle kept screwing me over so much..I’d get caught by the very edge of it and then get boned cause I couldn’t hit the kitten thing with sword (Axe seems to work better as I think it bounces multiple times on the root)

What really annoyed me was i think you missed me on that last fight with it, and I ran into the kitten root anyway.

If i’m standing in the middle of it, I can dodge out of it sometimes, or damage it..However for some reason, if I get caught on the edge of the thing, I can’t touch it (I can’t even attack it seems) with sword at least….

But yea..Its hit and miss.. some classes of course can escape it easily (Thieves) ..however my Ranger has a kitten of a time with it.

Also you run healing spring if you ran SB entangle would almost be useless vs you, you could go as far as sitting in the entangle and not worrying about the damage.

But your different style close ranger which fits your PI and build.

I run full apothecary, and i find that Shortbow’s damage with that set just tends to be pretty god awful which is why I don’t run it.

I could also run Greatsword which would be interesting, but I’d basically be giving up Axe/Dagger in that setup (since i’d move torch over to sword)

Not sure how i’d like that though.. I’ve tried it before and i felt the damage was subpar.

Axe i find useful for the Chill/Weakness mainly (though Split is nice)

No, don’t really play the thief all that much

I’ve played like 7 hours in the past 2 weeks

Its hard for me to get interested in a game that feels like its stagnating..

Its like how DAOC was for me after playing it for close to 9 years…Realm Points didn’t mean all that much to me as anything past RR11 was kind of grindy and pointless.

I however had the Lone Enforcer title to work for..this game doesn’t really have anything like that.

I was the thief at the end of the video. I just KNEW you would make another video and put me in it. If you recall, I dueled you a few times with both S/D and D/P about a month ago near your spawn in one of the borderlands. We discussed your experiments with technobabble and rangers in general. At the time you were trying to make a build work with it and we had some fights for your research, so to speak. =)

Ahh, I remember you..yea was trying to make the Daze Build work..I mean it does alright.. but the lack of healing compared to BM beastmaster is noticeable.

By the way, you could of totally gotten away..You stopped for a split second to I guess do black powder/HS combo and let the bird catch ya.

You could of kept running and there would of been no way for me to catch up hehe

Sorry to hear that. I havn’t logged in for a week myself. It has also grown stale for me too. I was hoping for a lot more with this latest patch, and quite frankly I do not feel like grinding out rank, in zerg vs zerg. I roam 90% of the time solo, so this last patch kind of killed it for me.

Please let me know if you move on to another PvP game, i would love to join you.

Also for rank, I ran around taking things (camps and such) while looking for fights..Its fairly slow if you’re not running in a zerg, when I can in a zerg it was so easy to get some rank cause all you have to do is tap someone.

This game over-rewards zerging though, so thats kind of to be expected

I decided not to do work, and google it anyhow. I signed up for beta.

After doing raids in EQ1, and EQ2 I can’t bring myself to PvE anymore. I loved the insanely hard to beat content in EQ1, that could take a year to beat, but anymore I just feel like PvE has been dumbed down, so I refuse to do it.

Quite frankly all I really want to do anymore is PvP.

PVE is ok now and again.. it just can’t be boring pve..

GW2 PVE is boring to me…

I mean i’ve been tempted to go play LOTRO some (I have a lifetime to that which is nice) and its basically just PVE

Nicely done. Pain Inverter is quite mean on a Ranger as it makes them similar to the Engineer in that it allows you to have access to all of the damaging conditions (bleeding, burning, confusion, and poison) since confusion was the only one Ranger was missing.

I still can’t bring myself to go back to Asura though … after switching from Asura to Norn, I’m hooked :-p

I hate PVE, so to level an Alt I just craft all my way to 80. My last alt took 5 days to level to 80, and I’m very lazy. I think it can cost between 40-50 gold, to craft to level 80. For gold just buy high on market and sell low. No need to PvE.

If you try a MM necromancer, tell me how it goes.

I tried a roaming MM necromancer, hell I tried any kind of roaming necro.

The issue is, you just can’t escape anything. You have 0 mobility with a necro other then Worm. Your only way to escape is to us cliff and DS/Jump to death.

With how zerging this game is becoming, solo roaming without escape mecanism just get really frustrating. Especially since you don’t have the best dueling class with a necromancer.

MM Necro aren’t bad in sPvP. But in WvW it’s a pain. It seems ether your pets don’t attack or they attack something you don’t want.

“Hey Bone fiend kill that thief!”

“Sorry man I’m too busy fighting that coyote.”

And one whirlwind from Warrior and all your minions are death.

I didn’t like my roaming experience with my necromancer. But I could prolly have done better if I got used to it playstile, but coming over from my engineer I felt the gameplay was too static.

A bit off topic (this is Ranger forum after all, lol), but try a combination of worm and spectral walk as a necromancer. You now have a teleport and a “portal” of sorts. Between those and staff marks, you should be pretty well off. If you can maintain swiftness, you’re golden.

The biggest issues for roamers are Dagger+Dagger elementalists and Warriors with greatsword and sword w/ 100% swiftness uptime. These classes are so mobile you’re bound to get tackled by them long enough for their zerg to catch you. Learn how to not get tackled by these guys and you’ll drastically increase your roaming survivability.

I did.

I actually focused an entire build on mobility only.

While worm is pretty cool, Spectral Walk isn’t as good as it look when roaming.

Worm is cool because it’s a teleport, and you can port to unseen place, or out of reach place.

Spectral Walk only work if the ennemy follow you, and if he gives you 5+ second so the port is worth it. Even then, if you are playing again good player you won’t escape. If you get immob, crippled or anything during that 5 sec, you are mostly death.

If a zerg get to you, Spectral will be useless. Staff is a better option in this case.

Ranger, Thief, Elem DD, Warrior, engineer. All those class can chase you.

Other classes will be 50/50 with you.

With my engineer, I have so many option to escape, same thing with this Ranger build right there.

But yeah, we are a bit out of subject now. :P

So studying the video some and I’ve realized two things:

1. I had the absolute worst spec to duel Xsorus; and
2. Pain Inverter is, quite possibly, one of the nastiest condition abilities in WvW.

The more power your enemy has, the more the skill hurts. When I pushed a button, and it appears even when I dodged, I took 968 confusion damage. I know when I have confusion not to attack, but I can’t even dodge, too?

Second, PI is an AoE, so it takes no actual target to land. It is also instant, making it even easier.

EDIT: Wrong. It does have a 3/4 cast time. Thanks Leo G for the correction.

Third, PI adds both retaliation and confusion, effectively producing a stun. Sure, I can swing my sword, but I’m going to take at least 1,318 damage doing so! Not to mention if I miss I still take the confusion damage, which is 50% higher than in sPvP.

Finally, healing yourself is also lessened by the ability. Withdraw typically heals for 4k but on a short 15 second cooldown. If I have PI, it lessens that heal to 3,032. If I also have poison, I heal for only 1,712!

So, to recap:
1. PI forces enemies not only to cease attacking, but some enemies have to stop dodging as well;
2. There is a short cast time but no targeting necessary for the ability, so difficult to interupt; and
3. Heals are effectively lessened by the ability, which when stacked with poison, basically null a small heal on a short cooldown.

tl:dr – If you’re a condition Asura and you are not running PI in WvW, you’re doing it wrong.

1. You can still block or dodge PI if you see it coming (not too likely) as it’s not an unblockable attack and even the range of it isn’t too huge.

2. It isn’t an instant cast skill. It has nearly a 1 second cast, if I remember correctly.

3. It’s not really making heals less effective, that’s just confusion causing damage on skill use. You can always cleanse it before you heal or just wait for it to expire.

But I think, personally, the kicker of PI is firstly, it only has a 30 second cooldown so you can pretty much use it every fight or multiple times when faced with more than one foe. Secondly, all it does is apply a condition and a boon, both which can be lengthened with boon and condition duration. It won’t make it super amazing (or moreso) but that can effectively improve the skill’s already decent up time. With just traits and food, you can improve the confusion to around 8 seconds or if you go the boon route, your retaliation 7-8seconds. Lastly, it’s already hard to see Asura animations so it’ll be hard to see this coming before it’s too late.

If it strikes your fancy, you can even share the retaliation with your pet and stick by it, giving the attacker a double dose of retaliation damage for that short window.

You would be correct. Apparently, you’re also very correct about it being hard to see, because I obviously missed the cast time while watching the video! lol

I used the term “effectively” to mean exactly how you said: it doesn’t actually reduce the heal, it just means by pressing the button you are taking damage while healing, thus, “effectively” reducing the heal.

Reminds me why I hate thieves. Even with my 1v1 kings of dd ele and BM ranger if they want to get away, they will.

Why am I so lazy in leveling a 7th alt to 80….

I’m curious on how a BM ranger will fare against a proper confusion engi, though. Good condi, confusion spec engies are probably the strongest 1v1 class. It’s good that they’re such a rare profession lol.

P.S. DO IT! MAKE A VIDEO OF A MM NECRO! I will be amused at the very least. Last time I roamed with my necro the flesh golem sat still for about 7 seconds while a thief was wailing on me.

Couple thoughts, I’m guessing the reason you’re getting the Confusion on dodge Jakob is you have an ability that’s proccing on Dodge, Maybe might or caltrops (I’ll have to rewatch) those will cause you to take confusion damage as your dodge is basically a skill use at that point.

Most of the other things you said are pretty much correct, It’s more useful for Close Range Melee Fighting Rangers though, as a SB ranger avoiding close range you probably wouldn’t get as much use out of it as I do.

If you watch in the videos I generally try and get in close pop it then switch to sword/dagger for the evade chain (meaning they’re swinging and missing, but taking lots of damage)

Engineer’s right now are also incredibly powerful with their confusion stacks, if you watch I fight one and a mesmer..He gets 11 Confusion stacks on me but I avoid it by not using a skill, I then PI him, and he kills himself because he didn’t know he had confusion on himself.

By the way, my PI lasts 7 seconds with my Runeset and food ;o)
