Pet overhaul
@Lobo :
Cheers buddy … Can’t figure out how i’ve missed that
I think having pets join you when you /dance is a great buff to pets. I wouldn’t need anything else, I’d be standing in place cycling through all my pets as we dance into the night.
Bringing up the pending issues :
- Pet categorization
- Pet “Kit”
Make them official, adding them to our suggested Pet Overhaul thread ??
Discuss …
-Adjustable Leash range: Allow the player to set a max range the pet will stray from their master. This would help with keeping the pets out of AoE’s by forcing them to follow the Ranger and mainly only hit targets within the immediate vicinity of said Ranger, thus helping them stay alive.
-Inherent stat scaling: on top of BM bonuses, implement a scaling bonus to an individual pet’s stat scheme based on the overall power of the Ranger’s gear. For example, a bear would become even far more durable than a canine, or feline, etc. (This would also help pets become like most other skills in that increasing your stats helps make them more effective in some way.)
If a Ranger is forced to have pets and be dependent upon pets, then they need to actually be powerful enough to compensate for the crap default AI foisted upon them.

if i put my pet away , i do that for a reason. It is very very annoying that it re-appears every time i take a little damage..please..we’re gamers..we know when we want our pet and when not. No need to think for us.
i think we should have control of our in the downed state. i hate seeing my pet stand doing nothing because i didnt get the chance to switch to another pet right before i went to downed. your downed and fighting to get back up and having a pet be worthless in that aspect just hurts.
You can still command your pet using the F1-F4 the skills are just no longer shown in your UI.
- Pet “Kit”
Make them official, adding them to our suggested Pet Overhaul thread ??
I doubt without a pet kit Rangers will never be fully viable for high-level PvP and PvE so yes, definitely add that.
I strongly emphasis on all prof being equally. But this doesn’t mean they have to do everything like each other and have same stats. That would be boring. Every soldier on the battleground have different tasks due to their strengths and weakness. They should be able to, when played right, make the whole team stronger.
Snowybell in this forum said: “While we have to multi-task, a warrior just needs to press 1,2,3 with his sword to get 40k damage.”
Well that’s how a warrior should be. Now that said, there must be some balance. If we (the rangers) are not able to make 40K dmg, then Anet must make us tough enough to stand (at least!) 40k dmg! Every prof has a different play style. But I agree with most of you, the balancing of the them need more attention and work. Being a ranger with pet, should not have drawbacks vs eg. a warrior without a pet (and without multi-task).
If Anet fix those issues others and myself mentioned earlier in this thread, AND gave us better vital / tough stat to it would be awesome.
I don’t mind being a ranger who is not best at making the highest dmg, but i would love to be the best to the something other prof can’t do!!! eg. better control, better pet tanking, more cond / boons from pet, etc. you know what i mean!
For example, some say rangers suck in dungeon. Never have I been in a group where they didn’t appreciate my ranger’s control abilities. But they could be even better! So could our pets!
I don’t see how most suggestions would help, unless the pet takes the same damage ratio as the player, since they do NOT have any form of damage reduction,
Several pets get regen/health gaining attacks (Bears and Drakes, albeit I don’t really notice the drake doing it’s health bite) and bears can flat out ignore damage for a few seconds. If you trait into beastmaster, Natural Healing gives all pets regen and if you take that with Signet of the Wild it’s not unusual for the pets’ regenerations to outstrip a damage source.

It’s already mentioned Eksoz, so no worries there (./point at permanent stow pet option)

- Adjustable leash range : Sounds too good to be true, therefore i’m not sure if it’s worth bringing it up. Gonna give a shot though
-Pet scaling is already mentioned, so : check
PS : I’d like to lend the phrase with the pets and add it to the original post since it describes situation of pets quite precisely, so thank you in advance !

Great points there my friend and even though i agree to most (if not all) of those, there is another thread for Ranger general issues. This thread is focused on our buddies, our pets, so please try and stay to the topic.
Thank you in advance for taking the time and effort replying though
Edit : Added Pet Damage to Combat Log!
Cheers
Look, I honestly love having my pet. I think the fact that we have to manage them to keep them alive, heal them, swap them is what balances their strength. We had to keep them alive in GW1 and didn’t complain. Not to mention that when they die, they’re not dead. Just on a 60sec cooldown. As opposed to a thief’s F1 skill or Guard’s virtues?….which have cooldowns after use.
What needs to be done isn’t an overhaul of the pet system. It’s simply fixing the bugs:
- Fix the bug that won’t let our melee pets attack on the move
- Fix the bug that delays the F2 cast
- Fix the bug that has pets running 20 ft ahead of us
- Fix the bug that makes pets unreliable when we are downed.
- Fix the bug that removes pet names upon changing them (cosmetic, but annoying)
These fixes would make our pets more responsive and powerful, the way they were meant to be. Honestly, I think our pets are the strongest profession-specific mechanics in the game, if working properly. They give a ton of varied utility and add a heap of damage. Not to mention they (potentially) keep fighting after we’re downed or can rez us. That’s sick. I don’t want to micromanage my pet, but I do want it to respond to the commands I have at my disposal correctly.
Also, buff pet shouts.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
more responsiveness when I activate F2 and F3.
Allow my pet to either register the hit at start of animation, or like players allow them to hit on the move so that they can keep themselves in range through animation.
I will be pissed if they cut my pets damage out. There would be no point to our class. I like fighting along side my partner in the heat of battle and working as a team to take down our prey. Honestly why I can’t tear myself away now, I love my pets, my characters feel so lonely when I play any other profession.
- Register hit from pets at animation’s start, not animation’s end.
This!
This change alone would most likely be a major improvement to begin with. Together with some form of dodge-mechanic when calling your pet back, and a built in improved movement speed, would most likely be a very good start.
I really like the suggestions put forward in this thread – let’s just hope the devs see it and at least consider some of them!
:)
They should have the f2 command operatate like a dodge roll for the pet, bypasses the ability queue. Isn’t that the reason why we have to wait so long? I am tired of telling my pet to return to me, then f2 so it can quickly fire only to have it glitch out and fire in the wrong direction, its annoying sirs.
Considering reviving the thread or not bother at all, since A-net keeps ignoring our lasting class issues.
PS : Guildies nowdays even congratulate me for keep playing my Ranger and not having reroll yet. Hope the sun will …
I just want to be able to stow the pet permanently and have the pets damage added to my weapons…..
I do not want to be forced to use the pets 24/7, i want a choice, you know like Guildwars 1….
The only thing I agree for WvW PvP is:
“Grant pets damage reduction from AoE attacks in PvP WvW.”
But for PvE? No way! Rangers are already over powered. Believe me.
I can solo a champion and a Group Event entirly without my Pet. With my Pet im like.. unstoppable.
Did you guys forget the skills and utilities rangers have?
You can cripple, Knowckdown, Dazestun, dodge like 4 times, 3rd time with Short Bow skill3 and the other one that’s utility skill. Etc.
This class has tons of useful utility and Weapon skills… Lots of strategies can be made.
We are amazing Kiters even without pets.
If Ranger’s pet where any more powerful than they are… all I’ll be doing is spamming for DPS and not care about what my weapon skills do since my pet has the agros and I can stay far and safe.. And believe me, its no fun having your pet do all the work just to keep you safe. The action/strategy and fun will just be gone then.
I am happy with how My Ranger is.

a old thread. but one that Anet could read and use.
for now though it just more proof that this issue has been around for a long time and Anet has been slow about fixing it.

There is no issue. The issue is people rely on their pet and want to do DPS all day hoping their pets can stay alive long enough before they take agro themself.
People should learn to use their pets and not rely on them all the time. you got useful Weapon skills and Utilities to do well while kiting without pet. I feel making pets stronger will only make Ranger way to over powered in PvE.

There are 3k + people that seen the post so far with 70+ replies. Apparently, we care for this ‘kitten’ class, along with its issues. Please respect our time and effort here and go troll somewhere else.
Thank you

I’m not the one Trolling.
I’m being entirly serious.
You on Borlis Pass Server? If so I can show you. Tawalaya Miyake is my name.
I care for Ranger as well, and I dont want Ranger to be this mindless DPS spamming class all because of pets having the ability to tank and spank and deal tons of damage while we stay safe in distance. Hellz no.
@DreamyAbaddon :
Good to know you are serious, even though we disagree.
I do get your point and to a certain degree you are right. But, ranger’s pet should be looked on an actual basis that we Rangers care about, like :
- WvW & Instances (Pet ending up insta-dead, playing without class ability is not fun)
- sPvP & tPvP (Pet’s poor AI and pathing issues come forward, crippling the Ranger to play and moreover rely on a flawed inconsistent AI to hope to deal ~40% of his damage)
On a side note, don’t get me wrong, but who gives a rat’s %^&* about PvE ? You can farm one way or another, blindfolded or not :P
Haven’t you consider this?
I created a new topic just for this specific implementation of Sang’s Animal Spirit idea. LOTRO had a similar problem with the Captain pet class and was able to implement both pet and pet-less. Here is how ANET might do it:
1) Add a 3rd option to the toggle just after F3: Guard, Avoid Combat, Spirit Form.
2) When a pet goes into Spirit Form, it gets the same ghosting that the Ghost Strawberries from the Halloween event provided to players and uses the same AI as Avoid Combat (it stays next to the player).
3) In Spirit Form the pet does not attack and the F2 skill is transferred to the player.
4) For each different pet type, the player gets a particular set of boosts to his/her Attributes to compensate for the loss of DPS, aggro, attacking multiple targets, etc.
That’s it.
Some great ideas here with a few seeming to be over the top ,but some realy stand out. Such as the aoe reduction in PVE . I play a beastmaster ranger with most of my focus on keeping my pet alive and dishing damage ( 25 in beastmastery).
With a 10 point investment in BM you can get Master’s Bond and when that hits 25 stacks your pet is doing some decent damage and able to take alot of hits. In open world pve its great and you can easily get that to 25, but not so easy everywhere else. My suggestion would be to take the buff Master’s Bond gives the pet and switch it to being on the ranger . The effect stays the same and icreases the pets attributes, but doesnt increase the rangers stats. Having it be on the ranger instead of the pet would let you swap pets and they would also have the same attribute increase instead of having to rebuld the stacks for each pet. Keep the buf the same, the mechanics the same but switch the buff to be on the ranger. This would help pets survive more as a whole and would effect every pet we have in all situations.
They need to fix the Black Widow so it isn’t objectively worse than the other spiders. The white raven also has this problem (though strangely the black moa and rainbow jelly don’t, so I’m pretty sure it’s a bug).
i just think pets need to have some brains. I can be standing like 10 ft from a baddie and spamming F1 and the kitten pet just stands around like its looking for a spot to take a kitten or piss. And i dont like it that when i have auto attack, moving my mouse over an enemy and pressing F1 doesnt work. So i am force to attack first taking aggro for my pet!….maybe the pet is smarter then i thought!. At times, it can so stupid..it runs off to attack the further enemy rather then the closer one. CMON!…WTF. Like i said, they should give me the option to slaughter my animal and sell the slab of meat i get from it.

Already mentioned in the initial thread buddy, but cheers nontheless !

I’d recommend you go the full 30 beastmastery. Natural Healing gives a fair amount of health to the pet every second, and if you pair it up with Signet of the Wild it can get over 200 health a second.
I’d love to see an overhaul. Pets in this game are just so uncool, not to mention near useless.
I like a lot of idea.
and this is my idea.
Aggressive mode.
F1 Attack(Passive.)/Get’em!!(Active) : Attack is auto atk.
Get’em!! : Forceful Attack reveange for master.
(30sec CD.)More %Hp Master loss more painful bite…
F2 pet skill…
F3 Come back(Passive.)/Watch out!!(Active.) : Come back run back to master(And start ATK when master open atk again).
Watch out!! : Order pet to evade and gain +10%Dmg for next 2ATK.(15sec CD.)
peaceful mode.
F1 detect(passive)/Search and destroy(Active) : range1000 detect enemy cloaking in range who’s come in range will got spot and get condition"Detect" 15sec will leave footprint when out of range.
Search & destroy : Swiffness+Fury(5sec) run to victim if target got attack when heve condtion"detect"Any Pet attack to victim will alway interrup and crippled.(25Sec CD.)
F2 pet skill…
F3 Stay still/Hide :Stay Still : Do nothing jocking back to master.
Hide : Pet will cloaking and gain protection(Perma protection untill get another order or Start Atk Protection will active 5sec when chang to attack.) 30sec CD for order hide again.
F4 swap pet…
(edited by Silverkung.9127)
For the 15p minor trait to give 50~% reduced aoe dmg and then for a ‘move here’ command to be added in would be wonderful.
Those 2 things and decent responsiveness and control over every ability would be everything I could ask for.
You can just send them out of bad situations and random aoes won’t slaughter them without noticing. You’de be able to control the situational abilities and pretty consistently relly on a pet instead of just using it as a situational perk.
