Pet ressing underwater is so annoying
I was killed on my ranger today under water because I got a permanent root wich is a very common bug in water downed state for ranger if you accidentally touch anything, today it happened in the middle of the water aswell, very few things are working very well under water I would say though that ranger downed state damage under water is far worse than the petheal because it is just ridiculously high damage for a downed state and as for the petheal you can usually kill the ranger before the heal even becomes avalible if you can’t do this with 3 people then you are doing somethig seriously wrong.
Rangers are hard to finish underwater. Whenever I am solo roaming in borderlands and get into trouble the #1 safe zone I will head to is the water in the middle because I know its safe there unless seriously outnumbers/surrounded.
It used to be better when LR was bugged and we could zoom along like 3000 range with it.. but still, even without that water is always good

i just spit my energy drink out. A couple of “dps thieves” complaining about not having the damage to compensate for Lick Wounds.
You thieves cant expect to have game breaking advantages everywhere in the game, leave some crumbs for the lil guy ….whos already dead in the water.

“I was trying to kill a Thief in the open with my friend (2 dps warrior/guardian/ele/necro) and we tried 4 times but we cant cuz his stealth and speed are so OP. He appears and disappear all the time, stands far from us and /laugh. We tried to AoE him but he was so quick… WTF anet? Why we cant sense stealth chars? How to burst him down if he can cure himself while stealthing at the same time? 2 dps warrior/guardian/ele/necro do not have enough dmg for kill a thief in the open… Its so stupid.”

Thieves are a a powerful annoyance outside the water , we’re a powerful annoyance inside the water. Learn to live with it.

I would say the thief is the hard counter for rangers rather.
The thief is a hard counter against itself underwater.
In any case, they’ve done a bit of balancing for underwater combat. However, I think this post really refers to downed state issues, which they have barely addressed at all, both on land and underwater.
They’ve already indicated they want to implement some sort of “finishing” mechanism underwater, they just aren’t sure what that will be yet.
But yes, I don’t think anyone will argue that the pet rez rangers have underwater isn’t completely ridiculous (well some might, but they are just wrong).
Nobody will ever argue that, Yam. Most of us have actually reported the bug and want it changed…for PvP anyway. PvE it’s a GODSEND.

Why are we a thief’s nightmare? I’m enclined to state the opposite we are good at outliving most others in a 1v1 good access to boons and high armor etc, thieves can strip the boons however and if necessary always reset the fight if they make a mistake and wait us out til all CDs have been blown and heals used up they can easily burst down a bunker ranger if they know what they are doing there are many variations of thief of course but in general I’d say good thief > good ranger.
I can tell you I beat and kill 99% of all players I run into 1v1 including thieves, all classes can be tough if the player is good however only a few times have I had to concede I simply stand no chance and it’s usually a thief, I met one today and he was cutting through my 3400armor like it was paper without being the slightest bit glassy I don’t think many rangers would have done much better to be honest.
those pet revives are over the top, especially in water where it’s not possible to finish. it’s just ridiculous how long it might sometimes take to kill someone underwater.
2 thieves should’ve probably killed the pet or something though, in this particular case :P

after thinking about what i said, I was referring to Melee based Rangers ie Faux’s RRR or my Re-port331 series, also Xsorus’ trap build would do well.
with our amount of evades, rapid condition application and amount of soft and hard CC’s a thief fight might be drawn out. but the second they get knocked down with weakness/poison/chill on them. its all over.
Now bow rangers on the other hand, Probably not so hot.
So i will rephrase my statement, I would say that the Re-port and similar based build rangers are a counter to thieves. But alas this isnt the place for such talk.
I think the lick wounds ability is fine . if a ranger is downed for long enough to use it then something has already been done wrong on the killing persons end. and most times above water we get spiked before it rallies anyhow.

Actually Hyjaxx my bow builds do very well against thieves, granted I’m a BM build with a bow so that may do it, especially seeing as how LB has a lot of ways to keep them from wanting to either A get close or B knock them away (sure my barrage doesn’t hit hard, but that cripple + giving might to my pet will be their end)

I have found if I am trying to kill another ranger in water and I can not do enough to down them before the pet rez is going to take over I save all my CD’s and just kill them again. Then if I need to, I do it once more and they just die.

^This i never noticed. I mainly do pve though and haven’t died in water a lot, but if it really works like this, it really is broken.
Because underwater combat is the epitome of balance in this game. Half the skill descriptions even look like jokes to begin with.
To the Thieves vs Rangers argument, thieves that aren’t specced for removing condis (or for about 30 into shadow arts in general) really shouldn’t be kill roaming condition rangers (BM, Shout Heal, even Spirit).
Thieves that go 30 into Shadow Arts with condition removal in stealth can be fairly difficult to kill, but there really isn’t any reason why that thief is killing the ranger. If anything, that should come to a draw, and the ranger player can pretty easily disengage whenever they want, provided either they are running sword or greatsword.
Note that I’m mentioning roaming builds (builds with the specific purpose of self sustain and fighting 1v1 or being and and fighting against small groups), and not necessarily berserker/damage builds that don’t build for any sustain in a fight really.

I will always remember the time a player was trying to “showoff” (perhaps, or may be he thought he would be “quicker” with damage) by trying to finish me off with attacks rather than with the finisher on the ground, and finally realized the folly of his ways and just did it normally. Were it not for the finisher, I bet many Rangers could revive themselves rather easily on WvW, and to be honest, of all downed mode mechanics, the ranger #3 is the best for PvE in my experience (mesmers can’t fool the AI, revenge usually ends up with the Warrior still getting killed (unless traited), the Guardian symbol is nice but with limited healing, the elementalist won’t be able to run forever, etc.)
I have a question for the OP, though: how is it “fair” that two thieves are ganking a lone ranger? :P The Ranger is completely justified in using all tools available to survive against such difficult odds-even if it’s throwing himself/herself underwater to take advantage of more favorable combat mechanics (and ESPECIALLY if otherwise he/she has to pay an equally unfair fee for armor repairs.)

No, what really happens is that the ranger pet comes back alive with full health once #3 refreshes, and goes back to revive its owner-I imagine how this could be annoying for WvW, but it really is a life-saver on PvE. The pet can really die, and it will stop reviving once that happens, but it’s easy to revive it again to continue the process.
