Pet won't do as I say
you must be new here
Just the WvW

Well I bought game at release. But I just came back to game couple days ago. Decided to give it a new chance cos my friend bought it as well.
The problem is the pet won’t use the abilities when in the middle of an attack animation. It will be queued and go off when there’s room, but often the reason you needed to use the ability has long since passed and your ability is usless.
Has been a complaint since you left. Will be a complaing after you quit again. ANet doesn’t seem the least bit interested in this class.
Yes, pets are stupidly broken. Sadly, having recognised that fact, you’re about to endure 5 pages of people telling you how pets missing everything and dying constantly is intended and you just need to learn to play.

I -thought- it was intended for like the first month or two until they (Anet) posted saying we are balanced around 100% pet uptime to which I just facepalmed and began looking at other professions…
And here’s the quote, from the December 14th Patch notes:
“The ranger class combines its own innate abilities with the skills of their pets. We’ve balanced the class around the idea that you always have a pet with you to aid in any fight….”

Oh come on, they obviously meant moral support there.

That’s sure as hell all they were in the Liadri fight xD

LOL, that’s priceless. Thanks

The pet makes use of the same crappy AI used by mobs. Ever notice that when some melee mob attacks it will stop moving first? As long as the enemy is moving at normal speed (except for moving backwards), then the enemy will be out of range of the pet’s attack before it lands.
You have to chill or cripple your enemy.
In addtion to that, pathing is horrible and the AI in GW2 doesn’t recognize AoE damage. Remember in GW1 when they made that change so if you round up half a dozen mobs and attempt to burst them down with AoE, they would run out of the AoE zone?
Pet survivability is only good in 1v1 or 1v2. Ever try and zerg bust in WvW? Lol, just put the pet on passive and use one with a F2 you can use on yourself/party prior to pushing.
Balancing around 100% uptime was a horrible idea. The failed logic is just bind boggling. It would make sense if pets couldn’t die but they can and easily. Thus we should be balanced around 50% uptime. We should be at 125% whith the pet up but 75% with the pet dead.
I saw the light and moved onto other professions. The fail hards at ANet are simply incapable of rational thought and is why the game in general is in a rather poor state.
So where is problem? I see way too often that my pet just won’t attack my target. It just roams around and doesn’t attack.
1) F3 will make your pet stop attacking and start getting back to you (read: attack queue cleared)
2) F1 on your target: new attack queue started
Micro-management for the win..

Too bad hitting F3 is NOT the solution, I mean sure if I wanted 95% of the pets F2s to be worthless but at least activate it’d be a good idea, but having my drake scorch thin air because I need to avoid pressing F1 is stupid and NOT A SOLUTION.

That’s priceless. Almost as good as the answer to the question Are there any plans to improve ranger, necro minion ai by Chris Whiteside
He said making the pets less dumb and better was like giving the possibility to warriors to dual wielding greatswords. He prolly just wasn’t expecting a pet ai question so he went into panic mode since he very well knows what a poopfest the pet ai is and started rambling about dual greatsword warriors but still it was so funny

In a game of active combat where timing is everything, performing 3 actions in order to reap the benefits of one is a severe handicap and again emphasizes just how poorly done this pet system really is. It is not on level playing field with other class mechanics.
To illustrate: If a warrior had to press F3 to clear his current attack queue, press F1 to re-start auto attack, and then F2 to use his burst skill, the skill would almost always be delivered late when the moment of opportunity had passed.

You should have elaborated that you were talking about the special F2 attack of your pet in your begin post then, by the way.. You merely mention attack, so F1..
Also, just a hint, put your pet to passive, so that the hitting of F1 becomes a reflex, instead of hoping that the AI triggers nicely and your pet rushes to its target..
It’s true that there are still some issues with the F2 activation (lots of QQ threads about it), so no idea why you needed to make another thread about it?

Heh, do you mean the class mechanic of the thief that everybody adores? Check the forums for QQ about thieves.. It’s silly to believe that every profession has the same potential and that every class mechanic is at the same level..

Warrior =/= Pet
Ranger has a steeper learning curve than (oh yeah) thief for instance.. And this makes it an awesome profession.. Ok, if you can’t handle the micro management, get a profession without the pet..

We’ve tried for almost a year to have our pet mechanics brought up to par with that approach. So far, nothing. I say the more threads the merrier at this point. Flood the freaking message board. Maybe it gets more attention, maybe it doesn’t. What we’ve been doing up until now clearly hasn’t registered how unhappy many of us are on their radar, so maybe we try spam?

True that, true that.. One can only hope indeed that ANet would start to look at their game from a player point of view instead of a dev’s..

Personally, micro management is not an issue. I’ve spent months asking for a better pet interface and full control over pet abilities. I’ve played pet classes in various games going back almost 15 years, so the L2P card is not appropriate in this instance.
In this specific case warrior does indeed equal pet because we are talking specifically about a class mechanic – an F key skill. In the Ranger class, we are given a variety of F2 skills based on what pet we choose. In the Warriors case he is given an F1 skill based on which weapon he chooses. Suggesting that we perform 2 additional actions to effectively use the special ability is a real and fair comparison. If we see an opportunity to use that skill, we should be able to use it, just as the warrior does with Burst, the thief does with Steal, and so fort. No one else has to fight attack queueing and sloppy AI in order to benefit from something that defines their class. Neither should we.

Wow, you’re clueless, for starters I didn’t make this thread, secondly I ALREADY DO ALL THAT, passive or GTFO has always been the motto of pet users in other games, it was th first thing I did on my ranger…
And seeing as how the ONLY thing we have direct control over our pet is the F2, why the kitten would you assume he’s not listening to F1 commands? Just… Wow…

…and we’ll have more of “How many lame excuses can you come up on ANet’s behalf” right after a quick word from our sponsor.

You know it’s bad when -I- have this same mindset about a poster… Gotta say I defend Anet on A LOT of kitten, but this is ridiculous.

I have had no issues with my pet. Make sure it is on aggressive and if you want to make sure it attacks your target, click the crosshairs under the pet portrait. If there is another issue, I would put in a ticket via the game. As I said, I have had no pet issues (other than my Ranger saying “I choose you” when switching pets, too much Pokeman for me).
