Q:

I’m curious on how a pure 100% Power Crit Ranger works when against other classes, on my first account I was a thief and played the thief out as much as possible, legendary etc.

When I made this account I decided to go Ranger because of my love for bows and seeing that it’s slightly improved since when I first played and I got my Ranger to level 80, so I’m at the point picking what endgame gear I want to gear towards and I want to know how well a power crit ranger works since their damage is heavily kitten by the pet, or is it more beneficial to go for a tougher build?

Full Glass Longbow Ranger is the glassiest build in the game, you will need to have somewhere to run or hide to. However the damage is amazing, over 1000 range expect 3k autos and rapid fire should hit a hefty 8-18k depending on how glassy you go. Signet of the Hunt 150% proc with maul can hit 12k also.

I have no problem hiding, hours as a thief got me into the habit of hiding and running out of engagements :P Just wanted to know if it’s worth it considering thief and warrior can hit a lot harder.

All depends what you mean by power ranger as that name really includes any spec that uses a longbow. Also includes shortbow specs that just ignore condis and go for power. I tend to think power rangers mostly run signet builds, but even that has several specs included.

Overall though, it’s not that great of a roaming build. It does exceptionally well against thieves, but that’s because of their lack of stability and your rapid fire tracking through stealth.

It does well against Warriors, but the fights last a long time since healing signet + adrenal health heals about 30-50% of the damage you do.

Eles also tend to be easy because their burst is easy to soak with a signet build and their health is quite low.

Anything that runs mostly condis will eat you alive. This is the reason it’s a poor roaming build as most roamers, other than thieves, run condi.

Mesmers and Necros I don’t even bother with because the lack of burst and AE makes these fights too much of a hassle.

Play it for awhile and you’ll really notice the lack of AE, Condi cleanse, and AE and why most say it’s such an uphill battle.

What would you suggest for a roaming build? As I do like to roam WvW as it used to be my greatest past time, and can the Ranger really roam? I’ve never seen the Ranger as a roamer

Woah this is a strange post. If Benjamin is correct and the auto attack does 3K damage on crits from above 1K range. Then none of these problems you are describing would happen? A warriors Healing Signet heals (with no healing power) a minimum of 1536 every three seconds( or 512 hp per second). Keep in mind that is if a Warrior has full adrenaline at all times (never happens). And Healing Signet is weak to burst soooooo that is one dead warrior easily. elementalists? abosrbing their damage? As a full glass Ranger going against a glass elementalist you would NOT absorb all their damage. BUT they certainly wouldn’t absorb your damage. And at 1K range on an unsuspecting foe you would easily do good damage before the ele could get to you (Ride the lightning and other mobility skills could change that outcome). Mesmers and Necromancers? Don’t let them get close. If your best damage comes from distance why let them get close? A Ranger should engage from far away. Therefore you would not be in range of Mesmers and Necromancers as they have limited range depending on their weapon set.
But that is the nature of the beast, everything is not known till you get into the situation. I think Power Ranger would world exceptionally well but would have a seperate playstyle than most other classes. Simply stand back, tug on your bowstring, and take out some poor sucker who doesn’t even know where that attack came from. Seems like a more thief playstyle to me but thats what the OP is used to. Seems good to me.

I do roam and small group with my power build (30/20/20), but I find myself running with the shortbow for practically everything other than thieves.

But generally speaking the condi and regen builds are what you’re looking for with this class when it comes to small group stuff. Large group anything works and most just run power with piercing arrows to hit a lot of targets.

Full glass the 3-4k crits are common at max range. The issue is why would anyone stay at max range? The number of ways classes have to get within melee range far exceed the number of ways rangers have to stay at max. At other ranges it crits for considerably less.

If you refer back to my original post, you’ll see that I consider power builds something with 30 in marks and something in other stuff (normally 30/20/20 or 30/10/30) so absorbing the burst of an ele is easily done with signet of stone and since their burst is on a long cycle time you can easily get through them before their burst can come back up.

As for mesmers and necros and not letting them get close, I don’t know how you intend to stop them. We’re not talking about fighting in a vacuum where we remember that one fight where everything went to plan. In theory a Ranger can lock someone down for 20 seconds, in actual practice though it doesn’t work out as planned.

The OP worded his post in a way that leads me to think he was talking mostly about roaming and 1v1 scenarios and not general zerging. Power Rangers work fine in larger groups where you’re not the focus of attention. If you are, it’s not going to be a great day.

If you want a power ranger build go GS + Sword/* be better damage than you could ever hope for on bow plus you’ve have some nice evades (survivability)

You know the most useful and fun part for my power ranger is suicide rush.
In GvG it’s very often to see opponent team regather/stacking might or healing. That’s the right time to pop SOH+SOS+SOW, Swoop into them, Maul, then GS111111 till you down. 90% of time I will go down with another at least 3 opponents , then my team rushed in and I rally up.
It’s very aggressive play style but a lot of fun.
Imagine 2-3 rangers doing the same thing.
The biggest advantage ranger has now is all other ppl think — What the hell this crazy ranger gonna do here ?

3k auto attack is very much possible on non-bunkers. I recently started playing longbow/gs ranger, and it is a looot of fun when you start not dying to the sneeze of warriors. Forget invulnerability and get aggressive on your defense. Krytian drakehound and Wolf, Lightning reflex, and take hidden pistol if you’re a Charr. I did try traited signet of stone and protect me, and 2 evades are just way better than 12 sec invulnerability imo.

power ranger is a playable class ankitten ot talking about gs/sword and … !!! am talking longbow ofc. Playing longbow/greatsword for a year now and i can tell you after you master it you can see it as a very powerfull build and ofc one of the most fun. As that guy said 3k autos is something normal on 1000+,only on tanky class you will hit 2000+ but on a less tanky classes i hit 3000+ all the time and on glass ones up to 4000+. Its all about atacking first and useing your skills to keep distance long enouf to get them to low healt/then swoop out and redo the cicle. Keep in mind that the post on top about healing signet warrs is true and just avoid 1 on 1 them couse of massive heals and dmg abbsorbe, you stand a litle chance if you dont do everything perfect,as for all other classes you can own every one of them couse your range can give you a nice advantige on start of battle……………………….Also want to say that using longbow for power build while stacking it with dmg signets can give you a kill in less then 2-3 sec on weaker classes and a train wreck on a bit tougher classes. So yea if you want to play longbow then do it… its harder to master then other builds but after you do master it you will find it fun and verry good in 90% of times

I use a power Longbow + Sword/Dagger build in WvW and have very little problems beating most folks that aren’t condi PU Mesmers and a lot of Necros.

Longbow isn’t a burst weapon, it’s a tactical one. It’s got a three second stealth and an awesome knockback both on low cooldowns, and that really grants this weapon a ton of survivability. Contrary to what a lot of people say, you need not go full glass to make longbow effective, and honestly, I think you’re not playing to the weapons strengths if you go full glass. It’s a long range harass/survival weapon until you can get in melee range (which all Rangers need to embrace.)

Speaking of melee… I don’t recommend GS, it’s bad for anything other than zerg surfing. Maul is good damage, but easily avoidable. LB/GS is too defensive, and I think Sword/Dagger on swap is going to do a lot more for you. Not only does sword do way more sustained damage, but you get permanent poison uptime with that set and three built in evades.

I’m in the same boat and have a seemingly very similar taste for what I’d desire the ranger to be.

The class isn’t for me, and I don’t think it’ll be for you, either. There’s no really good archer role in GW2, so my ultimate recommendation is to simply pick another style instead.

It sucks, because much like you, I’ve also played/mained ranged DPS as my build in games for over a decade, and also do some archery, but ANet refuses to acknowledge this style of play.

I play a thief because I don’t mind assassins, either. That said, the lack of archery options as viable main weapon builds for this style really keeps me away from playing more classes (I now have three thieves), and frankly the execution of the thief was so well-done for me that it in itself justifies playing the game.

If you can’t find something else stylistically that you like, then frankly I’d be recommending you find another game.

I’ve made the experience that a lot of players want to get into melee ranger reaaaaly bad. By that time most are not prepared to dodge your hilt bash maul combo, cause they are focusing on getting their damage in. Unless I come across warriors who have stability on stun/daze, I can hit most of those players.

Hilt Bash + Maul is nice and you’re right, it’s a nice way to land a Maul on some players. That said, your combo starter is on a 25 second cooldown unless traited. That’s a pretty long time.

This is the power build i use in pve(dungeons)

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQJATRnEVEZZVQWVwaZgY9YP7/PsHJ6QMyVAVZs0JzkA-jgxAYrARWASeFRjtNUENWdNmylIqGA-e

This is the build i use in dungeons.
Basically with this build your just trying to stack vulnerability for your party.
Longbow combo+greatsword combo
#1—>#3—>#2—>#5—>#3—>#1×2—>#2—>swap(greatsword)-#2×2+autos within 10 second swap —>#3—>#2—>#5—>#3—>#1×2—>#2 rinse and repeat.

Only use this against bosses.
I swap out remorseless with piercing arrows when fighting trash mobs.
Just swap to remorseless when fighting bosses
You can swap to singet of the beastmaster(signet of stone) when you need to do parts where you need to absorb damage like examples Dredge zone in fractals when you have to put down the bombs to destroy gate. When doing skips in arah.
This also works well with signet of wild when you need to dps structures only do this in CoF path 1,2. In path 1 use it if your going to do gate zeyphr+sick em+signet of wild while using sword+feline. In path 2 use it on end crystal thing. I use shortbow here since sword doesn’t really work out to well attacking that thing. Use the ledge near the crystal and swap your pet and command it to attack to get your pet to attack the crystal.
