“Revenant is actual proof that devs read the necromancer forum”
Hi, I wasn’t sure if it was ok to post this, but I have seen a couple people use these weapons together and now im curious. I recently got my ranger to 80 sporting around 2.5k armor (2.7k with signet) and a 2.1k power, crit at 42%, and crit damage somewhere around 65ish. running 30/10/30/0/0. I have Greatsword, sword+Axe.
I have been having a serious hard time fighting thieves and I was wondering if anyone can give me any tips on how to deal with them. so far ive fought D/P thieves and S/D thieves and they both seem to just eat me horrendously with me only putting in a few dents. Do I possibly need a weapon change or stat change in order to do better also?
2.5k armor for a melee class isn’t enough… 2.1k power is low and 42% crit chance isn’t so high at all…
i suggest you to look my guide but i use for my power build longbow and gs not gs and sword/axe; are you sure you want to play with your set?

I was originally using Longbow+ Greatsword. And i didn’t know that wasn’t enough :| My necromancer runs around with lower armor than that, so i figured if I get 2.7k armor with signet it would be fine. . . power can reach 2.3k with food and 45% crit chance. I will read your guide though. :o
edit: Yes, I can say that I do enjoy the weaponset.

The problem can be two things. Either you don’t put enough damage on the Thief, to make him stay away from you, or you don’t play aggressively enough and put your back to the Thief too much.
When a Thief attacks you from stealth, you will be at a disadvantage, and so your first priority is to get some distance to the Thief. Don’t run away at first (Thieves can deal a lot more damage to your back), but face him, dodge, and gain distance. You can do this with skills like Point Blank Shot, Muddy Terrain, or just a trap. Then use your healing skill if your health is under 50%, and start applying pressure to the Thief. The main goal here is to scare him away. Getting a kill is a bonus. You need to get a ranged weapon to really do this (longbow or main-hand axe), as the Thief will continually go from melee to range, and you want to keep damage on him the whole time. Chasing a Thief around with melee weapons, will put you at a disadvantage, as you’re keeping yourself close to him, while he can just dance around you in stealth. You want to damage him with greatsword when he tries to burst you down in melee (Counterattack>Maul>Hilt Bash>Swoop or alternately Frost Trap>Whirling Defense), and then switch to your ranged weapon when he tries to gain range and reset (Point Blank Shot>Rapid Fire / Winter’s Bite>Path of Scars>Splitblade). Use your pets or utilities to lock him down, so he doesn’t run too far away, or so he can’t keep pressure on you. Save your AoE for when he goes into stealth, and take notice of his attack pattern. Never stop attacking, and keep moving even when the Thief is in stealth. Other then that it’s just practice.
My build only has 1526 toughness and 18382 health, yet I can still beat a Thief. It’s all about being confident, by running towards them instead of away from them, and knowing how they move.

The problem isn’t your armor. The problem is stability and damage. You need to avoid or protect your self during big attacks which may be harder for some than others.
The biggest problem is that the thief can blind you or just stealth to avoid your damage. If you can hit with your big attack like maul and path of scar or whatever you can put him down quick. Lighting reflex can help.
Ah ok. I get it alright, Il probably try and switch back to Longbow then instead of sword/axe and try how that goes along with more avoidance. Lightning reflex sounds nice also.
edit: I guess I should ask, any suggestions on a pet? so far ive just been using spiders and Reef drake.

I would go with Jaguar because of the stealth and burst or ravens for the blind and burst. I would also consider wolf for the fear and the cripples and kd. I normally run Jaguar and wolf or ferns the healing of the fern hound regen isn’t going to help you vs thieves but they still kd and cripple.
Either go with Krytan Drakehound+Alpine Wolf for control, or River Drake+Marsh Drake for burst damage. Keep the pets on passive, so they don’t run around all over the place, and focus on using their F2 skills when the Thief gets close. The Thief will mostly move too quickly for spiders to hit him.
I personally prefer the hound and the timbre wolf (think that’s the name.. the one with fear). Especially when fighting thieves. They jump you, you can immediatly fear and hope to hit the thief. Best case, they’re hit with fear. Worst case is they blow a dodge avoiding it.
It’s best to roam with GS out as well. If a thief jumps you, you can push #4 to block and knock them back. You can also daze them to interrupt. Once knocked down you can longbow them away and auto till they prepare to stealth (most will drop the blinding field with pistol offhand. Others will do the heal animation, etc). Once they attempt to stealth you can use rapid fire. If you start the channel before they stealth, they’ll continue to be hit with it while stealthed. Once they come out of stealth, you can shoot them with hunters and stealth yourself and then swap back to sword for a maul for a big crit or wait out the delay for a second knockback or rapid again.
Thief really is a pretty good fight for the ranger which is why this class is often said to be a good roamer. It’s awful against other roaming classes usually, but so long as you beat Thieves you get the title of being a good roaming class.
