PvP: Pet gets obliterated by burns
clearly a skill issue here , i have no problems dealing burning Guardains since i trait for health sustain through oakheart and nature magic + evasive purity to help clear unwanted condis , if you use EB in Pvp on a Active Lb/Gs build with SoS and little survival skills Expect the pet to take the brunt of the hits , then you will need SoR to remove condis from the pet 1 every 10secs to sustain it with regen.
if you are not then the pet will die regardless of burn or not normal conditions will kill it.
go back to the drawing board rework your build as in this Patch the old SoS , LB/gs glass ranger is dead , just as you said SoS is not enough vs the improved condi damage and Eb melts the pet.
take more sustain active defences do not work vs condis yes WK maybe active but it is also limited to the amount of skills on the bar so you only get so many uses and using them for clears without considering the main effects like muddy terrain ect they are all situational so you can not clear condis when you want and WK condi clear is regulated through the builds rotations.
and a pet dying inside a ring of fire thats not the pets fault thats the users fault for not swapping pet or recalling it or health sustaining it correctly , letting it sit in a burning ring of fire will do the same to you too , you can’t just stand in it without suffering the consequences.

First off EB is a dead skill with the new condition meta. Second, by going nature master settler’s tank (which looks like the build your recommending), what are you bringing to benefit the team? Why not just run MM necro, which can transfer burns back to the guardian with the pet and has double the sustain? Not only that you can transfusion downed allies out of stomps and interrupt via fear.
I think in settler’s NM/BM tank you will be in worst shape with the pet dead, because your outgoing pressure drops to about nothing.
I find burn guards far easier to tackle on a marx/ws/bm ranger than a zerk medi guard. They don’t have a focus, their retal hits far weaker so you don’t blow yourself up using Barrage or Rapid Fire, no hammer to ring you in and burst your kitten off.
As for the burn, honestly, it’s easily manageable. Only unavoidable thing is Purging Flames activated on your face, but you should have at least one cleanse against that. Zealot’s Flame misses at above 300 range if you don’t stand still. If they’re running Permeating Wrath it means they have no F2 cleanse or F3 stunbreak. Entangle and pet taunt are your friends.
I think that whole wall of tears about how ranger sucks in current meta is grossly exaggerated. LB ranger has a good matchup against d/p thief, gs/ham warrior, any type of necro and engies not running FT HGH. Only thing that reliably beats me at this time is a lockdown mesmer, assuming equal skill.

You know, I agreed with everything you said until this. Assuming equal skill, LB/GS is hard countered by D/P, every mechanic is in its favour.

nope don’t even use Settlers i use Crusader or Rampager for the source of damage followed be defensive runes or toughness/condi runes.
ps Eb is only a dead pet if you don’t condi clear the pet.
the build brings HS regen of 8k over 7.5seconds if you got Skirmishing/nature/wilderness on point with CC’s and pressure get over yourself rangers do not act like guardains or Shout warroirs.
unless you build for the Battlecry timbre to provide regen+swiftness and condi clear on each and every shout which is 5 shouts on shout ranger which leaves the pet squishy with only regen but each and every shout cures conditions on the pet also so those burns are of no issue oh ya it also has Taunt or Zyphers speed on pet swap so you swap pets out when the shouts are on cooldown to clear the pet condis.
so next time you say what do we bring to the group we bring somthing and not nothing.

Anwsering to you, Heimskarl (I don’t know how to quote, go me), I either haven’t yet met a D/P thief good enough or no one has yet proven me wrong about LB ranger having a good matchup against a D/P thief. As i’ve noticed, ranger has plenty things to counter whatever d/p can throw at you. To note, i run S/D +LB.
As a start, thief has to close the gap. If it’s an open area like foefire/khylo sides/skyhammer mid, he’s not getting in 1k units of me without stealth. If he blows stunbreakers to close range, he’s dead since he has nothing to counter pet taunt/entangle/PBS. Even if you get backstabbed, Bark Skin softens the initial blow and usually you don’t have to pop SoS/LR due to pet taunt (I run dual birds or owl/wolf, so initial pet taunt hits like a truck). BP/HS combo can be also either countered by pet taunt or rapid fire. If that’s not available, i’ll abuse sword mobility to hop around like a kittening grasshopper to avoid being backstabbed. And if it isn’t that obvious, bird f2 into rapid fire into weapon switch triggering hydromancy is enough to 100-0 an unwary thief down.
To boot, you can easily counter thief defensive cooldowns once he starts losing. Shadowstep is rather useless since you outrange him at all times unless he abuses LOS immediately. Shadow refuge is a neon banner saying BARRAGE HERE or camera aim rapid fire over it. Shortbow does exactly nothing to help since LB outdamages at all ranges and there’s only so many autos he can avoid with #3.
As for main discussion, it’s true that ranger doesn’t bring enough to teamfights, but there are quite obvious perks, especially in Nature, with it’s magnificent Allies Aid and Protective Ward offering AoE weakness on very low icd. There’s always also a wolf fear, long duration water field and entangle. It’s not that much as other classes can offer, but coupled with all other tools like condi burst or solid range DPS ranger can offer, i’d say it can be valuable.

Guardians are hard counter to rangers? thats news to me, never had an issue with guards.
Anyhow, it already been confirmed that condi damage is going get tuned down and pet survivability is going to go up(extra 150 to stats), take a tanky pet.
burn guardians are garbage. you need to learn to time your dodges, blocks and cleanses properly. also look into ways of having a large HP pool. cc the guard a ton, get him to blow his stun breakers and approach the fight strategically. you cant kill a guard with LB, you’ll have to mostly use the GS.
