PvP/WvW ...Dumb Question
Bluntly: Real level and gear does play a role in WvW so don’t expect to be nearly as effective as a real lvl80. That being said, you can still function to some degree and if you roll in a Zerg it makes you feel better about it.
Lastly, I’m sorry you made a Ranger. Not to be a complete downer but I call it like I see it. It seems like an appealing choice, but it quickly gets discouraging. Tbh it could not be less fun (and by fun I mean useful) in WvW. I strongly suggest trying other professions out before investing too much in the Ranger. Sad but true. Either way, have fun.
So why do we choose to ignore it?
I know it is hard to quantify, but how close is a manafactured 80 to a leveled 80 …75% ..50%?
(edited by Moderator)
I’m not sure what the exact percentage is, but I kill a mid-leveled Elementalist (judging from the armor) in two Long Range Shots and a Rapid Fire a few days ago. So it’s pretty significant.

Here’s the laydown for your original question:
You and your gear scale up in WvW/pvp, but there is a catch. At 80, you will have 80 exotics on to get the best stats. When scaling up, it scales your gear based upon the gear level vs your level, and the rarity.
So at 45, with a full set of 45 rare gear, you will be pretty close to a full lvl 80. Probably 90%. If you stay in WvWvW and level 5 times, you will find your character LESS powerful than when you started. Because you now have a 5 level difference between char level and gear, where as the game says at 80 your gear level should be identical to your char level.
This makes low level characters be subpar in WvW, unless they really spend some dough to keep their gear up to their level. In my personal experience, it was much more effective to grind out the levels in the world and then spend money on getting a suit of 80 armor, rather than buying gear every 5 levels while pvping.

On topic…
In sPvP or tPvP you are bumped up to being a true level 80, and will have free access to max level PvP gear and all of your traits and skills. You will have full access to all of the same resources that everyone else has. It is a completely level playing field in that respect.
In WvW your stats are upleveled, but you don’t have any of the perks of being 80 like a full set of skills and traits. It will be a very obvious handicap until you actually have all of your exotic gear, traits, etc.
That said, play anyway. You can level in WvW, and there are things you can do to help even though dueling will not be your strong point. You can run supply, repair gates, res people during protracted sieges, etc. It’s not always the glamorous work, but it contributes and you can still have some fun. Learning where everything is and what needs to be done to take objectives is valuable, and can be done at any level. Just run with the zerg until you get a handle on things and you will at least have the protection of numbers.
Mostly, just don’t get too frustrated. There is a pretty high skill barrier with the ranger. It’s just not an easy class to play in this game. Our direct damage is relatively low, but we have crazy good control skills and lots of ‘em so if you can survive the initial burst (and you can), you can take a fight back with a bit of effort. Just don’t expect to see the big high risk/high reward stuff you see on spikier classes.

If you do foolishly persist with ranger like I have, then you HAVE to equip either a warhorn or a greatsword in WvW (I’d reccomend horn for spvp as well, but its not absolutely essential there).
The reason being is that you will need to run away a lot, and those two weapons give you a chance to do so. Also warhorn gives a great buff to your group and has a good attack, its probably the best weapon we have. You will also need at least one spike or ice trap to help you flee from death.
You can contribute in WvW at a low level if you run with a group; in spvp everyone is at the same power level so its fine there whatever level you are.
As some people said, in sPvP you are not kittened, everyone is the same. In WvW however, being level 1 (80) or a true 80 the difference is huge, it’s like if you were naked…doing two-three times less damage and taking much more damage aswell. You can still have some fun joining the zergs but you are no match against a true level 80 no matter what class you play.
To play in sPvP you don’t need to be above level 1, in fact a good majority of people that plays sPvP has low level chars.
Also he/she didn’t ask if he/she should or not play ranger, just ignore the whiners that only post to say “roll another class, ranger is so weak!”, if you read the forums a bit you probably know who are these anyway

Hey everyone.
Please stick to the topic of the thread.
Thank you

Okay, I have to call bullocks on the idea that the scaling works well. I brought a mesmer in with the best possible equipment – can’t remember the exact level, but it was the first level that there are green items. Level 11 I think…. Anywho, he was completely power stacked to the limit that is humanly possible.
I went to WvW and tried to kill a deer. It was an epic, 3-4 minute battle. The same mob on my ranger would have died in 7-8 seconds. The scaling problem probably goes away gradually, but at lower levels it’s INSANELY bad.
Telling new players that they’re currently at “level 80 equivalent” is a horrible mistake, and will likely make them think that they either don’t know how to play the game or that something else is ridiculously wrong.
Yes, in some cases they think the class is bad because they believe being upgraded to level 80 is the same as being a true level 80 in WvW.
I’ve also suffered the same, went to WvW with a fresh made char and tried to kill a mob…that’s what i call PvP :P

So to confirm.
A level 20 bumped to 80 in PvP is the same strength as everyone else. You can respec multiple times and try different traits and gear out.
A level 20 bumped to WvW is going to have a tough time.

Yep. You got it.
So the build I use while I level is irrelevent to pvp because I make a pvp build when I enter.
WvW it uses my actual build at the time….it just bumps me to 80 …correct ?
Thank you
Yes, sPvP build is made there, you can respec for free anytime, in WvW it uses your PvE build/gear, everything you have in PvE applies to WvW.
So, sPvP can be played anytime with any class since you can just create another one in a minute and be ready for it, on WvW you will use your real PvE char.
That is pretty cool. So I can create each class once…bump him to 80 and get an idea what they can do in a know thy enemy sort of thing.
Nice feature
Well, that’s definitely going to get infracted.
They removed three of my posts in this thread too. Two of which were actually on topic and part of a civil conversation with another player. One of the posts I can understand them removing.

Yep. Annoying as hell. “Oh, you posted something on topic? Well it’s negative and I personally don’t like it sooooo ./infracted.”
It used to be reasonable with only posts I figured to get infracted would.. but now its any time I spew something negative about a profession, regardless if its on topic or not.
So why do we choose to ignore it?
Have you ever considered they removed these posts because the OP never asked if he should or not make a ranger to begin with?
I didn’t see your posts, but it’s a fact that some people just post to say “reroll to another class, ranger is the worst blahblah” even if it’s not related with the topic. I find that perfectly fine, it’s getting really boring to see the same people whine on every single post in the ranger forum, even if it has nothing to do with the thread.

Yes, the fact is you did not see my posts. Y post if u have nothing to say on topic? I think you’re confusing trolls with humans

Same reason as why you made your three last posts. As i said, don’t get mad, i didn’t see your posts, but watching one of your last posts i believe i was quite right about the part that some people only post to whine “ranger is so bad, make another class”.
On topic, the OP already got his/her answers in several posts, there is nothing else to say about it.
Sleepy, I understand what you’re saying, but much like conversation in real life, questions on the forums tend to become more elaborate the further into it you get. So if someone says, “How much of a difference is there at level 40 and level 80” that can easily branch off into a related, though entirely different, subject.
I totally agree with you about the constant “don’t play Ranger” posts from the same group of people on the Ranger forums.
(edited by nldixon.8514)
You know as well as me that these conversations start every single time from the same 2-3 “trolls”, it doesn’t just appear by itself.
Writting on topic two phrases and then four paragraphs of the same whine they write on every single post is not really posting on topic.
I also got some post removed/infracted.

My last 3 posts have been made for different reasons as yours have been made only to attack me. As I said in the soon to be infracted post. I replied to a comment about how ineffective lower levels are in WvW with “it’s noticeable more so on a ranger due to the inherent low damage…” which was relevant because not only was it about the specific profession the OP created but is also a fact that because damage is split with the pet, when the pet cannot perform.. neither can you. So why would you infract that post? Because I told the truth or because I was on topic? My rude tone as of late is because of the way I have been treated as of late, you make the mistake to assume it is naturally always there and was in previous posts. You’re doing the same thing you claim to hate. Make my day more please.
So why do we choose to ignore it?
(edited by Sco.9615)
To attack you? Yeah, first stop being so mad, then read the posts again, you are clearly making rage posts right now. Whatever, mod should close the thread because unless the OP needs another answer nothing good will come from it.
Sco, you might actually want to remove or edit your post, honestly. It would be a shame to (possibly) get a permanent ban from the forums for losing your cool for a few minutes.
@Sleepy
Just lol. Its clear and admitted you don’t know what your talking about and on top of that you assume that because someone is angry and unpleasant at a particular time that they are always thus. If that was not enough, you then proceed to assume for yourself that I said anything like “omg don’t play ranger it is horrible” which I clearly did not but instead sympathized for the new ranger for when he does uncover exactly how Rangers get the shaft in WvW (generally speaking) then stated a fact about our profession mechanic. I suggested trying other classes in a different post(which is something everyone should do anyways), which was not infracted and despite your negative connotations on similar posts this one was polite and detailed. Finally, you yourself are doing the exact same thing you complain about other people doing but with a reversed topic. There’s a word for that….
@nldixon
I really do appreciate your concern but frankly I’ve been posting on forums for a long time and I’ve ceased to care. I can’t even play the game at this point because professions I like are so unstable. I used to contribute a lot to suggestion conversations and help threads but as you can imagine, that gets old, fast. It’s at the point that there are no more new suggestions because everything that can be said has been said and we’re still waiting for updates, much less, bug fixes. Then, when you do get on forums and see a post asking “Is it that bad?” Then reply with not only a confirmation but then facts and experiences to back it up gets infracted and/or trolled by other plays for simply answering a question in a polite, but unfortunately, negative tone. I’m just done.
@OP
I’m sure your answer has been found by now and I wish you the best of times on your Ranger and/or any other profession you settle on. Take Care.
So why do we choose to ignore it?

ArenaNet mods said a max level geared out character should easily be able to solo 4 lvl 1’s bumped to lvl 80, which I definitely agree with.
