PvP need help and advice
I play a full condi ranger and love it. Sadly, ranger does not offer a lot of team support unlike just about every other class unless you play spirit ranger which has fallen out of favor as of late. Cant say I have even seen a spirit ranger in pvp except on a rare occasion. The meta build for condi ranger is ok though I prefer sb and s/d and use sig of the hunt vs traps. I like to be able to move fast around a map. The nice thing about the condi build is you have literally 6-8 condi clears which is sweet. The classes that really counter condi well are guards and mesmers. I tried power ranger but find it pretty boring to play and way to easy to kill.
You just need to find the build that fits your playstyle plain and simple. I enjoy the freedom of having the sb for decent ranged attack but also the destructive capabilities of the s/d in melee range.
Thanks for the help. I’ve been trying out all the ranger weapons in PvE and so far I really like the axe/torch combo, I also like LB, GS and SB. I really haven’t gotten the hang of the MH sword. I tried turning off AA on it but I still find my positioning while using it is just totally off. Is axe/torch an ok replacement for s/d? Or would a/d be ok? Is ranger just really not the best class to bring to PvP?
My other toons are necro and warrior. When looking on those forums I see a lot of QQ about those classes at the moment. Necros especially seem to be at an all time low. So I was hoping my ranger would be the best choice for PvP.
Carrion , GS + axe/dagger or sword+dagger depends if you rather have some range or not.
i use sigil of accuracy + hydromancy for chill + damage , Axe Geomancy + sigil of battle to support axe autos to build up pet might stacks.
60,2,6,0 sharpen edges, spotter, predators onslaught
Natures vigour.
Natures protection / spirit to strenght , two-handed training , survival of the fittest.
utility , healing spring , quicken zypher , muddy terrain , signet of the wild , entangle (use muddy terrain + quickness and gs auto chain evade to avoid attacks prolong sustain)
Bird(raven blinds) or Snow owl (or anything that causes chill or fear)
Pig saimoth or Wolf/frost drake/salamander/draken hound/devourer , saimoth only for timed charges and promotes tanky moments while plasma is foraged , others are cc and mobility conditions to improve damage consistantly.
its a great build just don’t activate quicken zypher at poor times, inside a high damage aoe field.
tips for combo evade.
Gs>quicken zypher > auto > auto > when the evades end > hilt bash > maul > block (if needed) > swap > axe auto (if needed)> dagger evade/ cripple (if they are at range)>muddy terrain> swap > gs chain .
Entangle is used as a finisher move use if you think you have enough cc and condis to support the gs auto , swoop > hilt maul chain. (you counter attack by this time will be recharged and can use before going for the finisher to waste his downed skills)
i’ve done this before on kylo when our treb downed one , i Qz’ed the other with gs downed him and had enough quickness to finish both after blocking there down state skills.
Try this build.

There’s a heavy condi bombing damage pattern, it has very high survivability, has some nice utility thanks to Entangle, but the problem will always be FearLock Necromancers.
You have limited fear clear and limited condi cleanse. But you are Armor Heavy, and have very high sustain.
Try that build. It worked quite well. It’s almost immortal in the right hands thanks to the bonus Vigor, High Endurance regen, very high healing, and several evade options.
Also, if Axe is not comfortable for you, you can swap Axe+Dagger for Shortbow. It’s more comfortable but has less potential.

You could try Trapper Ranger. It’s fun to play, though it has its weaknesses and shortcomings. I haven’t played it in a while, since the tears the power longbow build can provide me are too sweet, but I when I played it I liked to lay out traps smart on points, on chokepoints where most enemies come through.
So is the power LB ranger a good PvP build now too? Is that a GS/LB combo? I think I’m just a bit worried that if I try to go full zerker, being new, I’ll get my butt handed to me, which is why I was thinking some kind of condi/highly defensible build might be a better starting point.

I believe GS is the most comonly used secondairy weaponset for that build, yes. The power longbow ranger is one of those builds that’s tricky to play. It’s good vs bad players and you can pew pew people hard (especially other zerker amu users) in team fights from long range — preferably from an elevation or other spot where you’re hard to reach. It’s squishy like any other glass build, though it has the longest range in the game. The downside is that it doesn’t have teleports or multiple on demand stealths like mesmer or thief, so disengaging when you’re being targetted can be tricky.
I don’t run either of the versions you’ll find on metabattle though. I’ve tried them both and dislike them both for different reasons, so I’m running my own version instead, which is closer to the full glass version than it is with SotF.
I can survive on point for days. If you see an engi coming towards the point run to intercept him. 90% of them are garbage fighters and will die or run before reaching the point but if they get on point you are in for a very annoying fight and will likely get decapped once your stability runs out.

Thanks to everyone who posted to my questions. I’ll try out some of the suggestions here and see how it goes
You can try every build in Pvp for free. Well, for ranger you need to unlock some new traits for skill points, but you can get skill point scrolls from PvP reward tracks.
Metabattle has multiple viable builds for every class, you can set them up easily and see which one fits you the most.
