Pwr/tou/vit
I run this build as well, 20/20/20/0/10 with power/vitality/toughness on armor, and berserker accessories.
I use 2 ‘Rune of the Flock’ and 4 ‘Rune of the Ogre’, and then Sigil of Rage (longbow) and Sigil of Intelligence (greatsword). Rune of the Flock gives me a nice little extra burst from the bird, and the rock dog is just a great pet. Sigil of Rage gives me three times the quickness (other two are from pet switching and Quickening Zephyr), and Sigil of Intelligence makes Swoop hit even harder with the 100% critical chance. It’s a bit of a gimmicky build, but I like it =)

Hmm. I usually do not recommend full soldier’s equipment (pwr/tough/vit) because you sacrifice a ton of damage due to the lack of crits. Also rangers have a moderately high base hp (15000ish)
As for sigil/runes… What weapons are you using?
I mostly use lb/axe+wh although since the movement increase I have been experimenting with other weapon combos. I find myself liking the sword+torch I also use a couple of berserker items mixed in as well.
Is there gear with those 3 stats? Please don’t say dungeon gear :/

You can get a ton of precision/critical damage from your weapons, accessories, jewels, and runes, it’s not really a problem. Survivability in WvW is much more important then it is in PvE or sPvP.

Yes, it’s the karma gear from Orr. It’s fairly easy to get thanks to the Karma boosters from events and daily.

I’d drop 5 points from beastmastery to skirmishing to get those 10% while flanking. Also, i’d use rune of the ogre.
It is, hands down, the best rune for pure power builds. Rune of the ranger also works. When the rock dog comes out ( which will be all the time ) he hits just like a canine though a little bit slower.
If you REALLY want to make the axe a big dmg weapon, pair it with the torch.
Bonfire, 2 at point blank will make you really happy.

You should either put 5 more points into BM for fast pet swapping or take 5 points out, there’s not much point in going 10 in BM since all the T1 BM traits aren’t that great, you get much more advantage from swapping pets faster since it resets the CD for all their abilities (double wolf means you basically have a guaranteed cripple +knockdown every time you swap) and gives you quickness.
The only current BM T1 trait that seems worth it is compassion training (for faster lick my wounds) or the stacking stats thing, but those are both gimmicky, this is because the ones that reduce pet ability cds/F2 recharge time are worthless since ideally you want to be swapping pets on cooldown and of course the 20% shout cd reduction is worthless since shouts are only used as a defense/troll gimmick at the moment.

Always liked the GS, but feels like damage is to poor.. If Anet was smart they would fix the GS skill so it did greater direct damage instead of the bleeding… Any way you can share, your specc ? Either here or on pm.. I Will be leveling a ranger to 80 this evening cause im bored with My 3 other 80s (guard, ele, thief) and want a new challange..

Of course, but when the OP said a “set” I just imagined full Soldiers (weapon/armor/trinkets). Which is, again, you’re sacrificing loads of damage.

True you do lose a TON of damage (says the guy in gift givers armor xD) but my go are you a god amongst mere mortals when it comes to WvW, you can wade through battle dealing death to the inferior bursty people all around you, it’s freaking awesome!!

I started running this build recently after mistakenly rolling a thief alt—it’s totally breathed new life into my enjoyment of the class, and it’s pretty beastly.*
*In PvE. I could not care less about WvW or sPvP as it stands now.

thanks I started giving the gs a real try today. battlefield disruption you could say that!!
Do u really think dolyak runes are the best choice for a bunker ranger? (rhetorical question)
I usually do not recommend full soldier’s equipment (pwr/tough/vit) because you sacrifice a ton of damage due to the lack of crits.
I usually do not recommend a non full-soldier’s equipment (pwr/tough/vit) because you sacrifice a ton of survivability due to the lack of vitality. Point of views.

Sorry, but this annoys me as you’re attacking a strawman argument. I don’t like full soldiers. That doesn’t mean I’m endorsing a full berserker build. Heck I don’t recommend a full zerkers set as well.
Also I’d like to point out when you say non full-soldier’s, there’s other sets that give you vit/toughness too, you know, like Valkyries/Rabid. The problem with Soldiers is that it has 2 defensive stats. Going everything with Soldiers is somewhat overkill. Best to mix and match, and find where your own sweet spot is.
I found that as a Ranger that can take a beating and keep fighting, POW/tou/vit gear was holding me back. All that power I was getting was just not giving me the damage I needed to accomplish anything.
I switched to a mixture of apothecary(tou/HEA/cond) and Shaman (VIT/hea/cond gear and started focusing on using conditions to do my damage. I found that my survivablitity stayed about the same, but I am able to put out quite a bit more damage this way.

That kinda depends on what weaponsets you are running with……..

Is never an overkill. Mix high tough/vit with dodges and protection and it won’t be easy at all to kill you. Ofc you may ask “What’s the point? Your dmg is bad” wrong i have over 2k power in spvp and my pet hits hard, and with hard i mean HARD. Also even if your crit is low you can boost it with fury. Actually some ppl i played against even asked me if i was specced glasscannon…

Since we have limited stats at our disposal, there’s an opportunity cost to spending everything on defensive stats. Especially with the way numbers are calculated, the higher you have of a stat, the less efficient spending more points into that stat becomes. So yes, there can be overkill.

The point isn’t your damage is “bad,” it’s that it can be a lot better. As I said, you can give up a little bit of survivability and get a lot more damage, comparatively, for that.
You know, it’s good that you like your (I’m assuming, from your posts) full soldiers set. But, for the OP’s purposes, he’s running 10 pts in beastmastery and wants to WvW, so using pets as your main source of damage isn’t really recommended. Full Soldier’s is just….something I highly recommend against, IMO.
Ah kitten my bad i forgot the op was looking for wvw only. Well ye with only 10 points in bm a full def spec is not the best setup. Lol i should defo read ops again before posting.

with maxed out skirmishing and maybe runes of thief and some precision in accessories, you can easily get 40% crit, have decent power, and a load of toughness.
