Q:

So, my wife and I decide to work on some alts and both she and me enjoy so far rangers. Now the question is. What is a good setup for me and her build wise? She want DPS/Crit more than healing. I want to do a build that helps her with the idea of buffing us and our pets with healing ability as well. She enjoy Longbow, I enjoy short or long. She wants to have an axe with warhorn and I don’t mind what I have on my second setup. I am so far testing sword/torch. I have a Bear and she has a cat, I guess that is about it, we quest a lot together so far my ranger is behind levels but I do have xp scrolls to help with that.

Any idea of such combo setup that anyone is willing to share with me?

Thanks In Advance!

I almost exclusively duo with my ranger, and it’s really fun.

You can duo very well with ranger/ranger, we do have more group utility than you’d think. And since it sounds like you are going PVE and questing, you can work well together.

If your wife want an axe, do it. They are condition weapon, but it can also work very well with crit damage, because they hit so many people and if you have a sigil that procs on crit (like fire blast for example) it can turn into a mass murdering tool. My power ranger often runs with two axes or axe/warhorn depending on whether I want the fury/blast finisher or more mass murdering power. If she likes cats, but they end up dying too fast, have her try a drake as the second pet. They are nasty and durable, do good damage and area damage. And their F2 is one of the best. You might want to entice her to try the sword, it is a love or hate thing, but if she likes it, it can do crazy damage.

If you want to play a ranger as well, to complement her go for traps and conditions. The shortbow works well with that, and sword/torch as secondary is fun too. Or double warhorn, or off hand axe if you want more mob killing capacity. If you have fire and frost trap, you have great combo fields together with the water field you already have. Her cats (and she if she has sword) can leap through it, your projectiles will burn/chill, and if you have drakes they will have blast finishers with their tail swipe. Area healing is really nice. And the axe twirl on the offhand axe. I almost always have a trap even though I am mostly a power/crit ranger, just because the synergy is so nice.

I would urge you to try anything but a bear, they are nice, but sadly so very, very underpowered. Drakes can live through mostly everything and do lots of damage too.

If you want to try another profession, ranger/thief is fun and the combo I normally use. It works best if you both have a few fields/traps, and it will be the ranger/pet’s job to hold the mobs attention. Both power and power/condition builds work well for that, and drakes are simply the best.

I haven’t run two rangers so can’t really help. But you’ve got some of the weapons mixed up.

Power weapons are longbow, sword, greatsword, and horn. These do no or very little condition damage, so are good choices for power/crit builds.

Condition weapons are shortbow, axe, torch, and dagger. These have condition damage as a significant fraction of their total damage, so are good choices for condition builds. The dagger is kinda iffy because most people use it for the evade, not necessarily the conditions.

That’s not to say you can’t do axe/horn or sword/torch. Just that if all you want is all four of these weapons between the two of you, then axe/torch and sword/horn would probably be better from a DPS standpoint. That said, sword/torch can work because burning scales the least with condition damage. So even with zero condition damage torch still does decent damage compared to a 1000 condition damage build. And axe/horn can work if you’re using a bleed on crit trait build (horn 4 helps you quickly get 25 bleed stacks), or if you’re using a boon duration build (the runes for this pretty much preclude a power build).

Also, sword’s autoattack is quirky and not everyone takes to it. It’s unfortunate because it’s the best DPS weapon the ranger gets, and the only other main-hand weapon is axe which sucks for power builds. So if you want to use the off-hand weapons with a power build, you pretty much have to learn to use sword.

And try a river drake instead of a bear. Almost as tanky, but does substantially better DPS due to the AOE attacks and F2.

Nice thank you for the info, do you think a Ranger is a good choice to combo with her Ranger or should I be looking into an Engineer or Thief?

Greatsword is a lot of fun to use, while sword is quirky and not for everybody. You’d lose some dps but in my quick testing (time to down a heavy golem) it doesnt seem that far off, it got a small buff last patch.

I duo with another ranger almost exclusively. We don’t really compliment each other in any way because the Ranger class doesn’t really synergize with anything. In fast paced combat, the class really only provides the water field to a group. Outside of that, there’s not much group utility in the class.

When we run together, our play style doesn’t change all that much from the way we play when solo roaming. He’s shortbow/greatsword with conditions (mostly celestial gear), and I’m longbow (and occasionally shortbow)/greatsword with power gear. We both run with a signet build.

If you’re up to changing classes I would suggest one that provides a lot of blast finishers and ranged CC to help her maintain a gap on the target. Thief or Engineer would be better, and the Engineer would be my preference.

Thank you guys, I will give the Engineer a run, I did try Necromancer but for some odd reason not sure if that will work with her Ranger.

Engineer is a very gimmicky class. I found the repetive clicking to keep swiftness up tough on my wrists, its carpal tunnel syndrome inducing. Out of the two, if you want to keep the feel of a duo I’d feel thief might synergize better, since they are both “rogue-like”. But really all classes can work together so its hard to make an argument either way.

Good point there Kilger, my hands get tired as it is due to working with computer a lot. I think I might try the Thief class then.

So far I like the way Ranger and Theif play so my final question would be. Which combo provide better support between the two that I can choose to play with the wife Ranger? If a Ranger I will grab a drake for sure. =)

Thief and Warrior (warrior especially) synergize well with Power builds. While Power oriented Ranger is strong vs. other warriors, mesmers and many others when you can utilize kiting, we need a class which will help us maintain decent range and peel off thieves when they jump around, bursting. Something like Sword+Warhorn/Hammer Warrior is a perfect peeler and helps our class A LOT.
