Why are you destroying Ranged players in this game aka Ranger’s?

As far back as I can remember, the PvE ‘meta’ has NEVER been Ranged for Ranger as it should be. It’s always been open with a bow, then melee camp, or just full melee. Don’t you realise that this defeats the purpose of a Ranger?

I would hope that most people, like myself, have made a Ranger because they enjoy playing a ranged class. This is what your very own gw2.com website says about the Ranger class under the Professions description: “Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows.” So, why is this not the case? Why are we melee heavy? Why can almost every profession reflect our projectiles back at us?

With the recent lack of Ranger ranged buffs and the constant nerfing to our traits (Adding cooldowns that shouldn’t be there!) and the reflects that everyone else now has, we’re useless as Ranged in WvW, PvP and PvE.

Ranger vs Mesmer, dead beacuse of endless reflects and dodge, basically all my damage is thrown back at me while they dps me and their clones to too.

Ranger vs Warrior, dead because shield trait reflects all my damage back at me and the warrior is immune to any and all CC while dealing MASSIVE damage! Basically I lose 80% my hf from my own attacks (reflects + retalliation) and cannot use my ONLY kiting skill on my weapon (Pushback) because the Warrior has instant-cast 10stacks of stability on more than one slot skill. Why isn’t ‘Strength of the Pack’ instant cast? Why don’t my stun breakers have stability like the Warrior does? Why doesn’t my Rapid Fire deal 40k damage like the Warrior Hundred Blades does? Why can’t I reflect his melee? Where is my retalliation?

Need I go on? The state of Rangers has been bad for a long time, with only very minor improvements over time (if any)!

This game no longer suits my playstyle, which is ranged dps. It was bad enouigh before being kicked from groups because I prefer Longbow etc, and struggling in WvW, but now it’s even harder and less fun.

Sic ‘Em is bugged mate, its alot harder now to beat Mesmers, Thieves depending on their build, I honestly change class if other side has 2 Mesmers its just pointless playing Ranger one is a problem. If your Marauders a good mesmer can almost 1 shot you and that’s with protective ward. This isn’t matter of learn to play you don’t have forever dodge or stone signet. GS block is worthless vs Mesmers even more worthless vs d/p thieves.

Ranger is worthless atm, we require support 24/7 or we are fish food. Even our condition builds are weak.

Pretty much this, against good players you will most likely have your buggy weapon skills abused (gs block is one of them, they intentionally trigger the block to keep you in place so they can burst you because the counter attack which SHOULD allow you to run doesn’t, it locks you into place so you’re an EASY target for burst) , peopel will intentionally ride you on longbow because they know 2-4 are extremely buggy when the person is extremely up close and the skill can easily put on a full cooldown and not even work at all. Hell, even I do this to longbow rangers when I fight them, and it works, because longbow is buggy as hell and sloppy.

They spent so much resources fixing things that positively helped us that they couldn’t even allow some of those resources towards easy fixes like the 40% damage on sic em , natural healing trait, offhand radius (why taken out anyway? just a dumb removal since you had just given us a bigger bonfire radius a month before post-patch… sigh) , there’s many more bugs that hurt us.

I also think protective ward doesn’t even trigger when you’re blinded as it counts as an attack to the player hitting you so I think it won’t even work on a blind burst combo by a thief as the protective ward will miss due to blind but I need to test that.

Engineers have same as Warriors in terms of Survival as well, Elixir S and the Trait Self-Regulating Defenses, Engineers can bring MoA to counter Rampagers or Necro’s DS and Elite’s. Ranger can bring what? Entangle and get it transferred back or just watch the warrior walk right out of it no wait we can bring the new RaO which does what? safe way to stomp someone?

it certainly does just go compair underwater spear vs gs on land the old underwater spear is what co-ed Gs was back near release the gs aa damage is out of palce , it takes a lot of glass just to get the last in chain to reach 900 damage while i see Mace and sword or gs warroirs reach 1.2k base on gs AA with full glass.

gs needs onther 10% increase for its 3rd in chain and 5% for starting hit , speed up the AA chain by 1/4 of a second .

or example

slash 1/4 (0.55)
slice 1/4 (0.60)
power stab 2/3 (0.70) though the cast time of the attack is limited to the evade so it evades for 2/3 of a second rather than 1sec a good comprimise for the increased attack speed and damage.

with quickness gs users would evade more often and destory more projectiles more often with Striders+quickness improving its survival while under quickness , this would make me love Chronomancers for there quickness i;d keep saying buff me and live in that moment of bliss.

Thief I believe under PERFECT CONDITION in which no-one interfere and all your skills off CD lol…

Mesmer.. GL with that. They can easily waste all your traps with one summon of clones.
You may be able to get him once for their first attempt, but not the 2nd time.

If you can use Ranger on Rate, you should be the number one.

Any build works in Hot join, even the pew pew build.

You should not bother to use it as a comparison.

Why do people still think the definition of Ranger is one who uses ranged attacks? You need to look at it more like a forest ranger, especially with all of the nature-oriented skills and attacks.

It’s funny when a Warrior pops Rampage against an evasion Ranger, that’s the worst thing he can do. It’s actually easier to kill a Ranger as a Normal Warrior than to use Rampage even if they do pop all their stances before going into it.

And you can beat mesmers and Eles. The only Ele that I had a hard time beating is Staff Ele and Diamond skin but we all know Diamond skin is just a cheat anyway. And if the mesmer stands off point to range you down, there’s not much you can do other than to line of sight them.

not sure, rangers have always been killing me in pvp and great at roaming in wvw too.

Roaming in WvW has become almost impossible compared to pre-patch.

My build went from months of tweaking to get to a decent place and decent damage to being killed in two seconds if I am alone and not with a larger group.

This is nuts.

I picked it because I like the thematics behind it.

I’m not sure what makes me cringe the most, people refering to the old flavor texts that Anet wrote on the class descriptions, or people arguing that rangers should be ranged due to the misconception that the profession name means someone who do ranged combat.

Not sure about the guildy’s build, but i met the ranger “ragnar” post the patch and he’s famous for his LB trapper build. We were dueling os OS and roamed on EBG also saw him duel other ppl and he doing as good as ever. His build was somthing like this, dont know for sure how he minmax his gear.

Im not saying it is supose to be a melee only class but it feels kinda weird when they nerfed LB and they are supose to be “Unparalleled archer” when all they really have over a warrior with longbow is basicly the extra range and velocity and an elementalist with an icebow is basicly an “better archer” then the so called “Unparalleled archer”

One could argue that there’s nothing untrue in that statement since Unparalleled doesn’t have to mean the best (from Merriam-Webster.com):

: not found elsewhere : never seen or experienced before

: having no equal : better or greater than anyone or anything else

Have no equal? Check (No equal doesn’t mean best, the worst has no equal either)
Better or great than anyone or anything else? Well… not so much.

3/4 is pretty good.

my point was either change the class or just change the class description which would be easy but they have done NEITHER which just show how little they acually care since they are moving more towards melee ranger

The class descriptions do not represent what the professions are like beyond giving a basic rundown on their themes. Beyond that, the ranger IS an unparalleled archer. It’s the only profession with access to both types of bows and the only profession that can effectively use it’s longbow from max range. The warrior longbow is nothing more than a utility weapon and cannot function as their main damage source like the ranger longbow can.

So it seems that the description is pretty accurate. However the profession description doesn’t cover how the game itself operates. In GW2 melee will always do more damage than ranged, and because of how the field/combo system is set up standing away from the melee group means you’ll not be benefiting from the combo fields and boon spam, lowering your effectiveness. These are just the raw mechanics of the game being melee friendly while ignoring ranged combat.

Meanwhile in PVP Longbow is still one of our better weapons because in PVP things like mobility and hitting the enemy when they can’t hit you are actually important.

Before patch, range did matter something, but now ? When game got quicker? You have nothing, if you get ganked or you gank, you drop like a stick. Be it PU or condi mesmer, a condi necro, a burn guard, d/p thief.. i can go on.. The problem of game is we lack of defensive mechanics that are active, dodges, and cooldowns.

Thiefs can reset stealth to fast, so do mesmer, and they still make full potential damage. The biggest problem with rangers currently is that we simply have nothing to defend ourselves because pets die so fast because anet simply didn’t think and is simply dissrespectful and careless to make rangers some how decent reactive class.

Pre patch i could have upper hand even when ganked, if i know who i face and how to react to counter it. But now? Game is so quick that every class can full burst each other in 1-2 combos. Normal 1v1 fights went from 1+min fights to 10 sec fights…

This meta is most boring meta i’ve been playing since GW2 beta. There is no counter to stealth, and yet those that aguse it have full burst potential. D/Ds are simply undestroyable in 1v1 if they face power vs power build, because their sustain is to strong.

It’s just sad what rangers have became, trapper is gone, spirit ranger is gone, regeneration ranger is gone, what do we have left? Longbow and condi melee ranger.

Can we get shortbow rework?
Can we get a decent dodge mechanics? “maybe get vigor on dodge if u happen to evade”
Can we get decent trait synergy? ( i trully love QUickDraw idea) but that’s one out of trillion good traits that i can say, this trait works beautiffully with my build.
Can we get classes balanced? Because current meta is is nothing but full berzerker, because even full dire, you will get destroyed in 1-2 combos.
Can we get pet buffed (sustain stats) so we can actually use mpathic Bond?
Can we get fury ranger a thing? It’s not working like you’ve planed.
Can we get somehow decent pet that will allow me not to worry more about his health then mine?
Can we get some traits improved? It’s a shame we literally have only 1 option because we trully have to decide which trait sucks less, and not which one is awesome.
Can we get sic em reworked? To work on radius reveal and not preventing reveal of a player?
Can we get off hand training back?
Can we get trapper ground targeting back ?
Can we get more then 1 post per 3 years of Anet on ranger forum?

Wish I could get back to GW1.. PvP-GvG. It feels like we are outcasted, not desired or rewarded..

I’m still fed up with the state of Ranger ranged attacks in WvW and PvE.

The “piercing arrows” should do exactly that, pierce! They should negate blocks and a % of toughness along with it! That’d bring Rangers in line imo.

Man… I REALLY hate to be ‘that’ guy but with the exception of PVE it sounds like you have a L2P issue here.

Ranger, if played well, has no counter in the current state of the game (apart from a very well played PU Condi mesmer). Power ranger is in the best state it has ever been in for WvW and 1v1 PVP.

A lot of people seem to be struggling with thieves and mesmers 1v1, which is understandable. Stealth gives those classes the right of engagement, however, with a calm head you can mitigate a lot of their damage and retaliate brutally. In both cases, I highly recommend running the Quick Draw trait so that you can double your defensive attacks while you wait for them to open. In either case you NEED to bind a ‘sheath weapon’ key somewhere convenient so that you don’t kill yourself.

Thieves: Start in LB and get in combat asap if you can, waiting 2-3 seconds for their stealth buff to start running out. Switch to GS and use #4 to block. If they are stupid enough to attack you during this time they will regret it and eat a 4-7k Counter attack. If they wait it out then use #3 to evade and gain distance, by which time your #4 will be back up due to Quick Draw. The thief has now lost the right to engage effectively. If the thief re-stacks stealth (they will be very low on initiative in the second situation) then follow the same process as above but space out your defensive skills a bit more. You can also weave in dodge evades in either scenario. Keep in mind that you have your own access to stealth in LB and can punish thieves for trying to re-stealth with LB #4 when they drop Black Powder. If you don’t have LB #4 up then you can track them in stealth by using LB #2 just before they disappear in their BP. If you find yourself in a position where the thief is in stealth and you’ve got no defensive abilities ready then you need to use your pet skills (wolf/hound) to buy yourself time. The key to beating thieves is not panic pushing your skills.

Mesmer: Depending on whether or not they run PU for extra stealth this can be very difficult, but very do-able. Beating mesmers largely comes down to timing your blocks/dodges/evades/immunity to nullify their shatter damage and being aware enough to see the reflect visuals and stop attacking via your weapon sheath keybind mentioned above. 90% of shatters are not instant. In order for a mesmer to instantly 100% shatter you out of stealth they need to set up invisibility for their clones via Mass Invisibility and this usually happens after kittenually long period of stealth. The same rules apply during enemy stealth as with the thief; use your blocks/evades/invuln to avoid or soak damage after you see the tell tale phantasms/clones pop out of stealth before the player. You have enough access to these things to use the next available skill if you’re wrong. The main advantages you have vs. a mesmer are your stealth tracking rapid fire, your mass defensive chains and the fact that you can stealth off their clones with LB #3 (try to time this for 2/3 seconds after they go into stealth or use it to re-position if they are going ham in the open). You need to be ready to go full offensive after every shatter you avoid/soak. Don’t be discouraged if you die to an instant 100% shatter out of stealth… maybe ANet will fix that one day but don’t keep your hopes up. Like I said, there is usually a split second tell for when a shatter is incoming.

Also, RE: WvW…

Power rangers are now extremely effective in open field fights and GvG. Go full zerker with runes of Vampirism to avoid focus party 1 shots if you don’t see it coming and deal out steady caster pressure, as well as assisting or actively participating in gank fights. Entangle is absolutely brutal if your positioning is good enough to use it effectively.

I’m sure there are builds for this but I’m happy to link my own if people would like that.
