would Ranger still be worth leveling ?

I’ve got a level 20 ranger and a level 20 necro trying to decide which one to level up next
I’ve got my mind on the ranger tho….

people were saying ranged ranger sucks, so I guess I need to use a GS and a some other combination for leveling ? Idk need help with figuring out a dece level build.

Level the necro, the AOE is the meta in Zergs, conditions are really strong and much lootbags can be had with little effort. Ranger you are the lootbag If I had my way again I would have levelled the necro.

Level up the one you enjoy the most (Or both, if you have the time). Both are good, but have different play styles. And try not pay too much attention to all the whining about Rangers in the forums, all the “Rangers suck” posts are overly exaggerated.

If you’re talking WvW, just depends on what you are looking for.

Necro is good for zerg and roaming.

Ranger, depending on who you ask, is really only good for small scale roaming imo.

Honestly, pick either a guardian, warrior, or mesmer.

All those classes are very well designed with numerous build combinations and roles. The ranger is pretty much just a less useful warrior, but with a pet.

You can have a lot of fun with a Ranger. However, there is no build that can do it all. You have to gear, trait, and choose appropriate pets for the role or game type you wanna play. There’s a lot of Rangers out there that are successful in different things.

You’ll get better advice from the community about builds if they know what you want to do with your Ranger. Solo level, dungeons, fracs, wvw, spvp, etc.

well I have a guardian(80) and thief(80) already, and I have a ranger/necro and one other character slot to level up with so I guess it looks like necro. lol I have fun with both of them just want something strong lol in pve/pvp. (my guardian is good tho I love my guardian, just need a new class to play around with lol)

well my ranger is only 20 so I need to (solo) level him up to 80 that would be the first thing I need to do and after that I’ll prolly try and do wvw with a mix of dungeons.

I guess I’ll have to do the dungeons for gear to do wvw unless there is wvw specific gear

I ran a LB and S/D with traps when I was lvling. Thinned out mobs with barrage finished with traps, had good fun with it.

GS is slower but Maul hits hard, and Swoop is pretty good for gettin outta trouble.

It all depends on what you are going to do when you get to 80.

If you like zerging in WvW then go for the necro. The amount of AoE spam they have is just astonishing.

And on the other hand if you enjoy small scale roaming in wvw or running dungeons in PvE then go for the ranger. Condition bunker rangers are one of the best 1v1 builds in the game and can take on pretty much anything and spotter/frost spirit is an invaluable group member in dungeons. By providing those 2 unique group buffs you can increase your group damage potential by +10%.

So for leveling a ranger what would be the most efficient leveling strategy(as in weapons/traits/utilities-etc..)? Everyone is making the ranger sound pretty sweet for wvw/dungeons. I’ve got my eyes on Ranger now thanks to everyone thats posting in this topic.

Once people get used to Water Spirit play and NV, you will find rangers even more desired in dungeons.

Getting to 80 fast is great, but I think you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not experimenting with all the Ranger’s different weapons, skills, and traits on your journey to 80. Solo leveling as a Ranger isn’t to difficult because the pets can hold aggro, heal, bring utility and dps. I think most of us Ranger’s would agree that learning to manage your pets and keep them alive and fighting is one of, if not the most important thing you can learn.

Yeah, if I can use a Shortbow/Longbow all the way up to 80 with out it sucking then ill do that, but everything im reading about is for lv 80 weapons/traits etc.. just want to use weapons that’ll make leveling cruise control destroying mobs without much effort if that is possible.

For levelling just go full zerker stats and 30/30/ wtv else you want. That’s how I leveled up. You can definitely use Longbo/Shortbow setup no problem all the way to 80. I ran Longbow/Great sword most of my levels unless I came across a shortbow that was better than my longbow. Greatsword is really good for that evade on auto attack, I managed to solo a champion krait from a meta event using it. It helps in those tough situations where you pulled too much aggro. Def. most important thing is learning to control your pet and keeping it alive. Final advice though, if you stick with LB/SB combination know that at lvl 80 its not that viable of a set up.

oh yeah I’ve read enough to know that sb/lb isnt good at 80. I’m only level 20 atm i havnt started leveling again because I want to figure out the weapon set ups I’ll be using beforehand. and I guess I’ll jus stick with Power until i can get the zerker stats.

Power all the way, leveling with a power build is a breeze. I’d recommend LB/GS or SB/GS since I found GS to have saved my life quite the few times especially against champions. That evade on the auto attack chain is really good.

So you’d rather blindly believe what some forum trolls post instead of trying out for yourself? If that is indeed how you plan to play the game, leave your ranger and get a warrior. Lots of spoon-feeding threads in the warrior subforum for builds and such as well..

Ah, there you go.. I can say it a billion times: Never ever let someone else choose how and what you should play. In the end, it’s you that needs to enjoy the game in the way you want to play it..
Enjoy your ranger, learn its weaknesses and its steep learning curve, and be satisfied when you get it to level 80.

In WvW you will do alright roaming, but in zergs you can either be meat in the zerg or you can sacrifice all damage to bring control skills.

PvE just go 100% dps with longbow, greatsword, sword, axe, and warhorn. They will cover you for every dungeon and boss you will fight. Groups should be chill with you if you bring drake, frost spirit, and spotter.

well I’ve always liked the ranger, I actually was leveling a ranger on the 3 day head start before the game fully released but my friend rolled a ranger too so i decided to just roll another class to give some diversity in our lil group lol.

but as far as pvp will come after I get geared in exotics or rare gear which will be easy anyways. but as far as those pets? Frost spirit idk what that even is lmao or a spotter. I have a drake already but its one from the charr starting place or w/e. I do have pretty much every weapon set in my bags just to level the skils up anyways. and in case i get bored playing with certain weapon sets.

Forst Spirit is a utility skill that grants us a chance on attacks to deal extra dmg. Spotter is a trait in Master Trait (2nd major trait) in the Marksmanship line that gives nearby allies 150 bonus precision during combat.
