Essentially, my friend (Engineer) and I (Thief) just finished the EB jumping puzzle, and jumped down in to the water where Mesmers use portals. A ranger was just at the edge of the water, and naturally, I just go for it (badges badges badges). He was downed within a couple of seconds in the water, so I switch to my spear and smash both him and his pet, with my friend shooting him over and over. We’re both specced completely in to damage. However, without using Bandage, or in fact doing anything, he regenerates health, and it outperforms both of our DPS, eventually getting back up and escaping through a portal that an enemy Mesmer dropped. We had literally no way to kill him, despite keeping up a constant onslaught for over a minute, and all of his pets were wrecked within seconds of the start of the fight. I even made sure there were no pets around while we whittled away with no chance of success. He did attack us a few times, but his damage was pitiful – I could regenerate past it passively if I started using stealth because it was so weak – however, he was just impossible to kill. If he got back up on land, it would have literally gone on forever with no victor.

I want to know – is this legitimately possible, and how is it possible?

Either you’re leaving things out, your info is horribly flawed or he was cheating. Because Rangers are incredibly weak and impotent. Play one yourself and you’ll understand why.

No, the moment he got back up on land you would’ve been able to down him in a heartbeat. The issue is due to the pet heal, instead of addressing how it rarely works, they buffed the heal on it so the pet keeps healing the ranger underwater (even when dead, either it’s intended because they haven’t addressed the flaw with the skill itself or it’s a bug) and you can’t out dps it (usually takes 3 to do it)

This is part of the new “Aquaman” title we’ve appointed to rangers, with all the underwater buffs we’ve received while leaving us like magikarp on land.

It sounds like they used lick wounds. That’s basically what it does, and it is capable of outhealing quite a bit of damage if they are not defeated before they get the chance to use it.

Are you absolutely, positively certain the ranger’s pet was not anywhere near even after they went down? It should be noted that Lick wounds also rezzes the pet if it’s downed.

Lick wound’s big weakness is a finisher, which can’t currently be done in water.

Sounds like a couple of Thieves in stealth healing him in his downed state.

Yes it is legitimately possible, and this is why:

You were too focused on your ‘badges badges badges’ when you saw that Ranger and you made a mistake. You underestimated your opponent, fought him in an area unfamiliar to you and allowed him to use his downed skills. That is why you failed to kill him.

And that’s all the info I’m going to give you as my Ranger takes great joy in fighting opponents underwater (badges badges badges).

EDIT: Awww, other people spoiled it by giving you the answer. Here I was hoping you’d try to find it yourself and learn from your mistake…

Aquaman strikes again! I went 1v3 today underwater and walked it off like nothing because of my armor fish healing. Once i rezd I got out of combat and came back to kill 2 of them. Then my armor fish was so pleased it lept out of the water and joined me.

Thanks for the info – it was fairly obvious that it was Lick Wounds. I made no mistake – I’m extremely familiar with underwater combat and rolled a Ranger in BWEs so I had an idea of what skills they had – which is why I kept extra vigiliant for nearby pets when he went down – and there weren’t any. So from the sounds of it, it’s just the underwater Lick Wounds being horribly dodgy. Cheers!

Nothing dodgy about it- it’s a feature of the ranger class that they are more effective when downed and in the water or just in the water than most other classes, which don’t make up for the fact we’re not so good on dry land.

You’re probably just hurt that you couldn’t instastab him and actually had to try to use some skills to figure out how to kill him- and failed.

Honestly lick wounds should work even when the pet is dead, its only fair since pets die so easily. But yes, my ranger is godlike underwater, above, not so much.

No, the bug is that Lick Wounds doesn’t work at all at times and your pet just sits down next to you and watches you die.

So I’m happy that it seems to work underwater at least, as on land the pet flips a coin first.

I know it doesn’t work all the time and it frustrates the heck out of me cause it seems to never work when i most need it. I was just stating the bug underwater, i know there is a bug with it on land also but they are completely different bugs

Oh, so you assume I’m a gimmicky backstab build, too. No need to get personal about it, buddy. Stop being such a bitter nutcase. It has already been stated by multiple other Rangers in this very thread that something is off about Lick Wounds underwater, going both ways for the benefit or detriment to the Ranger at random. Yes, it is dodgy. It clearly is, if it can continue to work when the pet is dead/repeatedly being killed during and/or nowhere near the Ranger.

Again, it is not a bug. Pets have always been able to res you or other players (through search and rescue) even when they are downed. It’s been stated by the devs that it is working as intended.

And yes, I went down like a rock after getting out of the water….I am a ranger at 1/4hp, and there were 3 or more of you guys as usual camping.

If this was not the server you’re talking about, completely disregard this, it was just a similar situation.

I am confused as I know my pet can out heal one persons damage, but not two at the same time. Something just seems weird to me. Not saying it did not happen, but ya … seems weird.
