Ranger Is a Bad, Boring Prof
No doubt the ranger needs some serious attention, but I wouldn’t say it’s not fun.
Even due to all the bugs, messy trait lines, useless spirits and stupid pets I still have fun with the ranger. Sure it’s a challenge, and you have to play smarter and better than other prof but, the needed changes will eventually come.

Ah but I agree its not fun, its literally the most boring class Ive ever played. Not saying you cant enjoy it, just saying I dont. I hope they fix it before other games come out because at this point my love of gw1 wont keep me here.
It’s MMORPG, nothing static here, everything can change. Just look to WoW – every season rules different classes (except paladins, onebutton cheat kitten)
It’s because it’s broken that I play it- playing a ranger in wvw is a lesson in trying to make a broken class work for you. There are so many things wrong with ranger it actually makes it fun and a challenge to play well in wvw.
If you wanted no challenge go roll a thief.
Having leveled a warrior, thief, elementalist and mesmer to 80, i figured I’d try a ranger. Mind you, this is pve, no Wvw. Strictly solo leveling and questing (with obvious group events when possible), with crafting as well. I went with a LB/SB combo and traited for max power and damage along the way. My pet ended up staying a Pink Moa pretty much all the way to my current level 70, not so much because it was the best, but because I got a kick out of having a Pink Moa named MIAMI LAWN FURY screaming in things’ faces like the TV monster from that Aphex Twin video.
First 20 was a blast. I was pretty amazed at the damage output and relative ease i had stomping everything, being able to handle vets and even a couple of champs. Then around level 40 things started to get a bit harder – had to use short bow a lot more for maneuverability, and switched to GS for swap. Ok, not bad – tried a couple of other combos – LS/Axe and LB was fun for a bit until i found myself flying all over the place in combat.
Level 55 I hit a wall. I tried crafting all fresh rampager gear, then again at 65, which by then it became clear that there was no hope for me to have a high damage ranged Ranger. To make a long story short, it was literally laughable. Shooting the crap out of something, hitting it with everything I had, only to watch it’s 85% healthy self boogie-ing toward me with nothing but auto left not on cooldown… By this time doing storyline quests were a long, drawn out pew-pew-y mess at best, or an almost impossible task at worst. Hearing Trahearne yell PROTECT ME at one point had me cracking up, saying out loud WHO ME ARE YOU HIGH AGAIN, BOSS?
And yes yes, i know, I could have done this, and i could have done that, and you can tell me that the class is blah and bluh and L2PLAY NUB but that shouldn’t matter in mid-to-high-mid solo gameplay. Every other class I’ve been able to meet the challenges of higher level questing – some more than others (staff elementalist was kind of a chore for a bit there), but for me the glass cannon Ranger I tried to make was more like a glass .22 with rubber bullets.

I hope so. I just read a build that said you should essentially get your crit chance as high as possible and spam 1 with shortbow. Just makes me a die a little inside.

Umm that’s called an opinion. Grats on having one. Just because you don’t like something or find it boring doesn’t mean everyone does. Hell, there are kids in this game who enjoy farming. That’s right… farming for mats and drops.

Umm, the OP asked the question “anyone else feeling disconnected from their ranger?” and people responded with their opinions. No need to get snarky here.
ranger is broken and a simple update won’t make it any more decent. for this class to shine like in gw1 they’ll have to change most every trait, all utilities but traps, all bow attacks but barrage, all elites and all other weapon skills but maybe torch and dagger.
to me. i have pushed this prof to its max since BWE1. as someone who always plays nature based characters (shaman, druids), i feel the ranger was just so poorly executed. and it does not feel like a nature based class. it just doesnt, you can argue it any way you want. this may be due to uselessness of spirits and lackluster pets.
i have lots of success with various builds in tpvp, but im not having any FUN.
the pet is a liability in PVE. i have no attachment to my pets. theyre idiotic, unresponsive, and poorly designed. not to mention kinda ugly (except a few cool ones like birds).
compared to other profs, the ranger is just bad in WvW. i feel like i bring small things to the table. for example, the rifle warrior does vastly superior ranged dps because bullets connect nicely with the target. mesmers, thieves, eles, guards bring so much to the table. rangers, necros and engies are bottom of the barrel in wvw.
i just feel a lot of my GW2 grief would dissipate if i were to just go back to my guardian or mesmer, both of which bring huge things to team fights.
anyone else feeling disconnected from their ranger?
Your right, the GW1 ranger is “thee” best example of what a ranger should be
Gw2 ranger is some random person picking up a bow with cheap tricks.

I think you should read my post again. I mentioned how I DONT ENJOY IT, idc if you do or not. Im saying they either make the class more fun for me and make longbow worth using in pvp or Im outtie. Not trying to sway any1 here just hoping anet gets their kitten together.

Exactly, I do feel disconnected and bored as kitten, I am lvling a friends toon on wow atm because he is paying me and even if he wasnt Im so bored with gw2 atm simply because ranger is boring. The game is amazing, and I love it, but the fact that my favorite class is a waste of space atm makes this game miserable for me.

In a nutt shell. GW1 ranger had it all, gw2 ranger doesnt, but keeps trying.

This, i still do love GW2 ranger, and it’s still my favorite prof, HOWEVER, GW1 ranger was so much better, its spirits were actually strong (those things literally changed the rules of the battlefield, making people ill prepared to fight on your terms to get destroyed).

Though I don’t really care how good the ranger is, I too always play the nature-based class.
And I agree that the ranger doesn’t feel like a nature based class at all. It feels like a hunter class. In tuned with nature but not nature-based per say.
It’s like the difference between a hunter and a druid/shaman in WoW. This class has great potential to be both, but especially with the broken spirits, it feels like a strictly hunter class.
That’s why I think we should get a staff. And our spirits should be fixed. And then maybe a out of water spear (though I think a lot of classes should get this). Then it would feel right.
If I’m on my ranger and not using a longbow, i’ll probably fall asleep

agreed, I feel this way completely, sadly longbow kinda sucks so I cant really stay awake while playing ranger in general.

I pretty much just dance in and out of melee range while i maneuver my pet around the battlefield (that takes a lot more effort than a lot of people believe), but it’s rewarding. Pet stays up, i stay up, enemies die, etc.

If pet doesnt die sure, and if it actually hits the targets.

I don’t know what you’re implying but it’s not because I have trouble with the other weapons. They just don’t seem exciting as the longbow. The longbow I currently using all my skills while doing Pet Micro (Ex. swapping them when I’m doing barrage/rapid fire).
The shortbow is unbelievably boring and I’m too glassy to run sword more than 15-20 seconds.

It’s the same in PvE and PvP. You run around in circles spamming auto attacks until you’re in melee range and go squish.
I mean the class is broken from the ground up with almost nothing rewarding to offer this game or the player. Everything from skills, traits, pets, utility, to PvP design just doesn’t work. If you aspire to do more than sit on a wall all day (which even that is working against a handicap because no pet!) you may as well choose another class.

So wrong, where is your sword/dagger? You know you have weapon swapping right? Ranged is simply inferior to melee in close PvP combat if you don’t have a zerg to hide in, and even then really vs a good assassin. This applies to every class.
Like any reasonable ranger who wants to play a ranged class, I use greatsword. Why you ask? Because it’s the only way this class can properly disengage from a fight.
Even with GS to get you some range you’ll not be able to effectively kill good players in single combat if you keep swapping back to bow(as I’m sure you’ve noticed or this post wouldn’t even exist).
I run S/D and SB. If they try to melee swap to S/D and you’re near impossible to hit. When they inevitably try to run, swap to SB and snare + stun them whileshooting the, in the back. Way more effective.

Yea Im about to switch back too it, been using sword/horn because its easy might stacks with elite up but I prefere GS.
LB/GS power builds are fun, but theyre not dueling builds.. u need team support. there are other viable GS builds, such as power BM bunker. but the LB simply sucks outside of WvW.
Its all about preferences. I’ve tried every single class in game until i came to Ranger(was my last choise because i rarely play ranged classes ) and i was about to quit gw2 because any of them wasnt interesting to play but ranged got me playing again and im still in game.
I even got several classes to lvl 80 and dropped then instantly because.. i dont know, i have tendency to drop things i guess. But on ranged i worked my way out with full exotics, ascendent and such.
Warrior,Guardian,Thief is really way more boring than Ranger can ever be and i tried them all , one of them to lvl 80 also.
Also as ranger you cant rely on one weapon set. Switching beetwen SB and GS for me is constant in PVE, PvP SB/Axe+Warhon and WvWvW SB/LG .
Ranger has way more to offer than eye meets first.
Cheers,

Get to level 80 and start doing the higher level dungeons. Come back and say that again.

Ahhh newbies are so cute. Sorry but anything is fine in pve, except in dungeons. Go do a dungeon and enjoy your dead pet 90% of the time. Go join spvp and enjoy being the weakest player on the field. Go do WvW and enjoy being told to build for aoe roots and snares. While it is preference if you like the class or not, just because you like it doesnt mean there isnt many things wrong with them. I also played warrior/guardian/thief and I feel ranger was by far the most boring and weakest of the 3. Enjoy your ranger, Im betting that in a few months tho, you will be on here complaining about them. Ive been where you are, if in a few months you still enjoy it then good for you. I just cant.
Bad? Aye. Boring? No. I’ve tried every single class, and not a single class has given me the joy of the Ranger. There’s just something about pet/kite classes I really enjoy. Hunter was my favorite class in WoW, and I always prefer the archer/beastmaster in any game I play.
Ranger for life. I don’t care that the other classes are better. I’m playing this game hardcore mode.
There does not exist bad, boring professions in GW2 yet bad, boring players run amok in these forums. And OP…I’d hate to tell you but…

sorry bud, but there’s pretty much a consensus that the ranger is lackluster in many ways. but who knows! maybe a spirit rework and further pet buffs may make it more interesting.
regarding someone post about spvp, this is where rangers actually shine. ranger is a beast in spvp
