Ranger Out of combat - Pet attack
Server : Anvil Rock (Since Release!) [SOLO]
Until I die. The entire time, the pet stayed full HP. Why?
The Ranger stayed out of combat. So his Pet was getting out of combat regen.
How is that possible?
It’s not.
When a pet attacks someone, it makes the ranger go in combat no matter where he is. The pet probably had SotW and the ranger was running BM/Healing Power. That means he (and the pet) had around 200-300 passive hp regen.

I hit pretty hard when I’m in downed state, I’m a necro after all. I doubt 200-300 regen could outheal my auoto attack + random bleed damage.
But I will keep this as a possibility. Yet I could see the ranger, and he wasn’t in an attack position, like he was out of combat.

Actually, no. The fact is that the ranger can be out of combat while the pet keeps attacking someone IF the distance between ranger and pet is far enough.
This was something I never even noticed myself until ppl started to complain about it. I consider this a bug that needs to be fixed.
As for how much the pet regens when this happens, while it’s not as much as “out of combat” regen, the pet still regens the same as always as far as I can tell – which is plenty if having SoW AND natural healing running.
You can’t seriously be complaining about loosing to a pet while in downed state now, right? Because if ppl start to complain even about that, I don’t know what to say anymore…
No,
If you did read my post, I pointed that I didn’t mind that, but if it happened when I was still alive, it would have been an issue.

Actually, if a ranger is running a bm build with signet of the wild and natural healing the pet could have a lot more than 2-300 passive healing per second.
Signet of the wild is 125 hps + .25 healing power. If the ranger has 1200 healing power which is pretty easy in this sort of build that would end up being 425 hps. Natural healing is another 125, for 550 hps.
If the ranger popped troll unguent on top of that there is no way you’d be able to touch his pet.

I stand corrected, yeah it can happen, but it has to be like over 2k range for it to happen. But I still stand with it not being “out-of-combat regen”

This is closer to it, except you can get even higher. My pet heals passively for around 620 hp/s on top of whatever Troll Unguent may be giving it.
Menorah | Charr Cat | Some Cat Thing
Still running my old RRR build because why not
Can you see the troll unguent buff on the pet?
I took a screenshot, I will have to check it out when I get back home.
600 hp sec seems possible to be the reason.

I was being conservative xD
Also, if the ranger had engaged you he would have had to travel a long ways to actually get out of combat and have the pet get the ooc regen.
What pet was it?
Some pets have skills that regen on attack. Fern hound has a regen F2.
If they run x/30/x/x/30 (putting the other 10 pts anywhere else) you can have pets healing for more, passive regen, pet’s heal on crit. Use a cat pet that crits half the time, plus signet of the wild (I think that’s the one with regen?), plus troll unguent.
I can guarantee that the pet will out heal anyone’s down state dps.
As for out of combat. I, as the range, have been out of combat while my pet is in combat once beyond a certain range. The pet, is not out of combat, only the ranger. I noticed this when I tried out a build that did away with most, if not all, passive regen. My pet also didn’t heal on attack with this build.
The person ran and my pet chased but I didn’t. Eventually I got back the ability to swap skills and my hp regen’ed back up to full. My pet’s health did not regen and I had to use TU to heal my pet. Eventually I had to swap my pet out.
Can you see any buff that could explain it?

Signet of the Wild is the one that lookes like a bear paw.
Honestly rangers don’t need to be ooc for their pet to out heal incoming dmg.
I remember reading somewhere that the pet has its own “in combat” state, so that even if the ranger is in an out of combat state, the pet, if attacking something, remains in combat and does not receive an out of combat healing. It isn’t anything I can confirm though, because it isn’t as though it’s easy to test whether or not the pet is receiving out of combat healing, with no visual buff.
What’s likely happening is that, with a necros downstate damage being so poor, the pet is literally outhealing your damage. If that damage tick is from your downed attack against the pet (the number being 139), then on a per second basis, the pet is literally outhealing the damage 4 to even 5 times over.

The raven is a dps pet and has a buff to precision for high crit chance. None of the above show up as buffs. In addition to that, there is also this.

I’d have to confirm but I’m pretty sure that this too will not show up as a buff. The pet will just suddenly start taking 0 damage.
Edit: Oh, I just noticed that the pet has the following signet passive as well.

Man a bird can become really beefy then :P
It’s the first time I can’t overdamage something just from regeneration.

I’ve had my cat face tank champs in Orr. If not for a small slip up on my part with an add (I accidentally used my pet’s F2 against the add causing my pet to leave the main boss), I could’ve solo’ed the legendary boss at the Temple of Dwayna.
However, that’s pve. In pvp, remember that the pet can be up to half our dps. Yet provided that you are at normal forward, in combat, moment speed (strafing and moving backwards is slower), then when our pet stops to attack, you will be out of range and the pet will miss. If you have a speed buff (+33%) then I’m pretty sure you can include strafing.
So half of a ranger’s damage is prone to missing at least half the time. It also takes time to go from target to target, and if both are dead and the swap is on a 1min cd, then the ranger is at half dps for that minute.
It would be better if we did 25% more damage than everyone else with the pet but then did 25% less than everyone else without it.
Instead we depend on our pet to be on par and even then most other professions are capable of out dps’ing us.

It’s a double edge sword
If you get 75% dps ranger / 25% dps Pet, You will be better at dpsing with your ranger and being consistant. GC Ranger might become useful.
But at the same time, 50/50 damage is the reason why BM bunker are so strong right now. Keep 50% dps, and still be a bunker. Most class lose any kind of damage when going bunker.
I would personally like your idea, since I don’t like having 50% of my work being done by an AI.

That’s actually the reason why people build BM bunker with condition damage so often, at least, there’s a logic reasoning to it. That being; because pets represent some percentage of a rangers power damage output, but little to no part of our condition damage and little ability to increase their condition damage, people stack condition on themselves to get the full benefit of stacking condition damage on the player, while increasing the amount of power damage done by the pet to the best it can be.
Logically, that represents the most optimized damage output for a lot of decisions made in regards to pvp. Whether or not stacking power with a power pet is the same is a different story, and it isn’t something I haven’t ever seen anybody put up numbers for to show equivalences or anything.
