Edit: Since I got zero responses I’m changing this to more of a progress report for others to follow as I level.

Well for starters I’m new, only been playing about a week now. Tried a few other professions and i’m liking Ranger. Just hit lvl 21 and have been questioning my choices the whole way through. I’ve focused primarily on Power, then vitality, then toughness which isn’t much I should add.

I feel a bit squishy
Attribues:
Power 132+129 = 261
Precision 132+13 = 145 (do I want to crit more with a ranger)
Toughness 132+16 = 148
Vitality 132+58 = 190

Attack 529
Crit chance 8%
armor 347
health 2332

all green gear

CHANGES:

Primarily switched to focus on Precision and crit %

Attributes are now:
Power 201
Precision 421 (far more dps than high power)
Toughness 180
Vitality 180

Attack 483
Crit Chance 59%
armor 410
health 2,502

Gear is now using all masterwork with minor rune of the eagle, lyssa, and ranger. These are faily cheap on the Auction house. Bows are now using precision with % critical damage modifiers and upgrades for critical chance. For those that may not know you can replace the old upgrades with new ones. I either salvage from gear or buy them from the Auction House. Pretty cheap and easy to do. Eventually I’ll want to get my crit chance up to 100% as I hear the dmg is pretty amazing.

Currently my pet, using the Jungle stalker because of the high crit it already has. Also a key trait i’ve taken is skirmishing 10 for the increase in precision and crit % and Beastmastering 10 for +100 healing and increase to pet attributes as well as Masters bond which increases your pets stats every time you kill a foe. This greatly increases your pets stats and with a dps pet it will make your toughness stat better than what you’d have with a bear but not quite as good of vitality since the bear has primarily high vitality as it is. I also use signet of the wild for the extra regen for me and my pet. Since these changes the kills have been quick and my pet hasn’t died and I have been killing foes +5 levels above mine with ease.

The signets help as well but i’ll switch them up with the traps for larger mobs.

Still unsure as to which is better, longbow or shortbow. melee is kind more for fun for me.
Carnivorious appetite is pretty important for pet survival as well but at my level I don’t have it yet.

This is where my build is headed http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#MVom0Vc0ohGmoohngo0Ga0fzk0M

Any and all constructive criticism is appreciated. I’m no expert, i’m learning this as I go.

As an added note and bump: Trying to keep me and my pet balanced so my neither of us is out damaging the other. Its tough to do but it keeps me and my pet alive this way without sacrificing dps. I feel it’s a great balance and I can’t wait to see how it fairs in pvp.

You would want to get more power than precision later on in the game though.

@snowybell if you could please elaborate as to why power would take precedence over precision later on in the game that would be greatly appreciated. Blatantly saying do this later doesn’t tell me why I something may be important.

tip: in lvl 80, with 30/30 marks/skirm and 0 Beats. Your Feline WILL outmatch you NO MATTER what u do. Cond, Dmg, Crit, doesnt matter. In terms of DMG Feline 80 pets are the real deal.

100% correct.
For real DMG over REAL TIME (not only burst, but over time).
2 options:

Berserker Shortbow build 30/30 marks/skirm
Berserker Shortbow build 30/30 skirm/tough

This in terms of DMG.

And NO, the 2 skill Longbow seems GOOD but the overall of the weapon speed cant keep up with Shortbow.

The reason you want to max power over precision is the fact that power scales faster. You need ~900 power added to double your damage. Assuming ~200% critical damage, you need ~2000 precision added to double your damage (more or less depending on how high your crit damage is). Both power and precision stack additively with themselves, but of course stack multiplicatively with each other. So ideally you’ll want somewhere around 2:1 power to precision ratio.

This is just a general rule, and various traits and effects will obviously change things up. E.g., on crit procs mean you want more precision. Increase crit chance traits mean you want more power.
