Ranger Pet
If you want to play a Ranger, you have to get used to having a pet.
It’s specifically a pet-class. There’s no way to play without one. A-net also favors a must-pet design of Rangers, so as long as things are this way, you’d either have to roll another class, or get used to them.
I personally like pets. I find them clunky, but I still love them.
If you want an Archer, get a Guardian ready and take the DragonHunter specialization.
Im afraid hte ranger (ATM) is tied to the pets if thats something you hate (Theres alot of people that feel like you. And theres alot of people that disagree with you. I personaly LIKE hte pet but I understand the desire to not have one)
HOWEVER. The guardian just got announced they would have the dragon hunter expansion. Featuring a Ranged/CC/Preperation focused playstyle. If that is the playstyle you would like. It may pay off to start leveling a guardian. And switch to dragon hunter when HoT comes out.
If you don’t like that idea. Maybe feature one of hte build types that has very little to do with the pet. (certain easy to use pets involve the wolf there useful without being micro intensive like drakes or birds which require skillfull use of there f2s to deal decent damage).
You may enjoy trap builds. traps are getting reworked soon to be stronger than they are now. If you enjoy that playstyle it may be worth considering. Especially since the CC aspects are good whether you run condition builds or not. (Spike/Frost/Poison traps are reliable even if you dont run condi power as CC options you can use to buy time or negate healing). Trap builds dont REQUIRE micromanagement of the pet to be effective. And they can work with both power and condition options. (They arn’t optimal at this time. But as I said they are getting buffed)
Another option is a survival of the fittest build featuring wilderness survival skills. These utilities do not require you to make perfect use of your pet to be effective. And like traps tehy can work with both power and condition builds.
Thanks so much ;D im gonna level up a guardian
Yay, it is working guys! We can just send them over to the guard forum now!
I’ve been trying to get archer-people to play thief or warrior for years. They’re all just names.

Key words have been bolded for emphasis.
For those who love to play melee Ranger, well, SOL.
The problem is that neither the thief nor the warrior really fits the archer archetype.
The problem is that neither the thief nor the warrior really fits the archer archetype.
And neither does the ranger. Yet people demand ranger to fit the archetype for some reason. Rangers will never be pet-less (as discussed in the ‘Future Elite Specs always with pets’ thread). Warriors and thieves are thus more likely to fill the niche. Both already have multiple non-magical ranged weapons and no pets. Plus their selection of ranged weapons can be expaneded further with elite specializations (such as the speculated thief specialization which gives it a rifle).

They all use magic with their bow skills. You can bounce an arrow off the ground to get it into a target, but you cannot bounce it from squishy target to squishy target and injure each one in turn. You cannot shoot two arrows at once and expect reasonable range, damage, and accuracy with either of them. You certainly can’t knock someone 10 feet back with an arrow unless they weigh much, much less than you do and your arrow has a heavy, blunt tip on it. The ranger is the only one that does its damage with the arrows themselves rather than attaching bombs or incendiaries to them for damage, and is the only one to use precise shooting to target a single foe and bring them down. The warrior version looks like a longbow but acts like an artillery piece (although it does have some commonality with splinter barrage from GW1), the thief shortbow is both short ranged and focused on trick shooting and weird arrow types, so the only thing that we’re left with that has much of anything in common with the GW1 bow ranger or real life archery is the ranger.
Saying “just play a warrior” is just such a stupid answer. You see, also Heimskarl is wondering, that this statement worked

The problem is, that no class fits the original GW ranger, except a ranger without the pet-constraint
And in addition: The pet is the only class mechanic you MUST use. And it is the only class mechanic that can destroy the game. Jumping puzzle, enemy-pulling, show enemy your position while in stealth, boss mechanic destroying (i.e. marionette) or impossibility of getting achievement (scarlet end boss fight). Did i miss anything? For sure, but we don’t need all reasons here Not again

What I am wondering, is what that second sentence means.
I said play a warrior because if you want a GS weapon that does tons of DPS and you don’t like the pet, you aint gonna like the Ranger. It’s simple, really, not stupid. It wasn’t an answer to a question it was a statement of fact.

I mean that you was wondering that finally one player moved to another class. ^^
