Forgive the juvenile nature of this – I’ve never fraps/video edited/etc anything before.

Long and short of it – you can experience this as a pet-type animal in the norn starting area Heart (spirit of the jaguar or something) or simply attacking an animal and strafing in a circle.

Pets need to attack while running, just like PCs do – with the exception of our 1hs attack, which has the same root problem as our pets.

Now, what else kind of proof do you need that something is wrong?

Awesome and sad that we have to actually show proof but lets see if we get a ANet response.

Waits for the 2 people who think rangers are fine to come here and say that this is how it should work because it improves dps and lets not forget docmed is gonna tell you that u don’t know how to play..lol

Same thought crossed my mind.

Anyway, this is exactly why I don’t use my pet as often as I want. It’s a shame really because I thought GW2 would be an improvement of GW1, Ranger wise this is the opposite. Rangers and pets are worse in GW2 then they were/are in GW1.

It’s a non-issue if you use ranged pets.

Melee pets definitely have some issues.

So the pet feature is working to less than 18% (7 ranged pets out of 39 pets in total)? Cool, that’s almost what I’d call “ready for closed beta”.

Even if one accepted this “argument”, it still leaves

  • the horrible pathing
  • targetting limitations (ever seen a spider/devourer attack a target in a location the pet couldn’t walk to, e.g. up a wall or so? no? guess why)
  • lack of responsiveness
  • aoe vulnerability
  • positioning issues (when you’re standing on a wall your pet always stands right at the edge facing the enemy to clearly tell them where they need to drop their aoes to hit you)
  • weird aggro mechanics (sometimes your pet can hold aggro, sometimes it can’t – even when using the same skill rotation against the same mob type)

which are subpar.

I like how I can agree that pets need work, but the forum mopers will jump on anything I say that’s positive. I realize that the forums are generally used for whining, but this is getting ridiculous.

I CONCEDE! You’re all right and I’m wrong. The Ranger class is the worst class in any MMO ever. The only reason I ever get any kills in sPvP or W3 is because my opponent’s mouse batteries are always dying.

I think I’m just going to reroll Thief or Warrior. Rangers are terrible, this is the worst day ever, and my life is ruined. Boohoo!

Well it was better than your posts that’s for sure.

But in answer, I don’t think anyone is saying we’re so horrible that we can’t play the game. We’re just pretty underpowered in many situations compared to the lovechild that is the warrior. We need A LOT of fixes. I think the SB and the lies about it were the final straw for many. I’m still playing my ranger so obviously he has qualities. It doesn’t mean that I’m going to see pink and try to tell others that everything is great and if they disagree they must suck.

I’m pretty sure everybody is aware of all the issues with the Ranger class. There’s a GIANT list of bugs/issues stickied right at the top of the forums.

That doesn’t change the fact that there are still viable alternatives that DO work if people are just willing to look for them and try them out.

But lets face it, we have to do a lot more work to find these alternatives than some classes like war and thief. If these classes are where the devs want them to be, we’re nowhere near that. Saying that we are is a lie. We can be good with some work but not great like they are. Put two amazing players together and the ranger will come under.

Yes, Rangers need a lot of work. So do some of the other classes. MMOs are, by their very nature, a constant work in progress, so it’s not surprising that this is the case. The GW2 release has been pretty smooth and balancing has been about par for the course. Anyone who has played any other MMO at release and doesn’t have their nostalgia blinders on will realize this.

I feel like balance is almost achieved for most classes, with the exception of certain builds. Backstab Thief builds that can burst someone down in 3-5 seconds, for instance. The nearly unkillable Elementalist bunker builds are another good example.

The Ranger class requires much more thought and planning to be effective, because there are so many ways to be effective. Personal play style heavily impacts the effectiveness of Ranger builds, way more than other classes.

Hey hey everyone – let’s not let this get ugly. I spent time I could have been leveling up my new Mesmer on making that video! I don’t want to get the topic locked =/

I just realized what would make a better video – me on my mesmer, walking around in circles hitting a veteran bear that was a level above me and I never got hit one time, no speed buffs or anything. Just every time it goes to swing at me, it has to stop and think about it for 3/4ths of a second, during which time, I just saunter out of the way =P

Why don’t you go post your builds for pve and pvp in the build area if you think that your builds are making a huge difference? I’m not trying to be mean btw. I’m saying who knows maybe you know something no other ranger has thought of. I doubt it but maybe…If I haven’t tried them yet, I will.

I did post my sPvP/W3 build in another thread. I’ll post my PvE build when I get home if you want. It’s just a Beastmastery build that focuses on pet survivability through healing using a hawk. The main point I’m trying to make though, is that it’s not all about your build. It’s about your play style.

[Edit: Speaking of not being home, I need to get back to work before I get busted. Haha!]

I agree that the pet response time needs to be improved, but the pet should not be a replacement for the player. You should not be able to send a pet after a player in Worlds PvP, and then expect the pet to hit with all its attacks, and also dodge the opponents attacks (as other topics have suggested the pet should do). What makes the pet dangerous is not the pet itself, but the pet in combination with a player. Just doing something as simple as putting chill on your opponent, will help the pet to hit more. Your “job” is to make sure the pet is effective. That’s part of the learning curve of the Ranger. The pet is, and should always be, second to the player.

Can you repost the Spvp/W3 build there as well so it’s easy to find? May as well put everything together. I will honestly try them out if I haven’t already used them. I sitll think that no matter what we need A LOT of work as a class but I’m willing to give you the benefit of the doubt that these builds will make a difference. As for my play style, I don’t have one. I adapt to be as good as possible with what I have. What I would want to have isn’t working and it’s frustrating… This is why I’m here. We can’t always have what we want but I feel like there are some gross errors that do need fixing as they were meant to be a part of our class and are not working at all.

PS: As I said in another post, I do appreciate that you’re willing to ‘’show numbers’’ unlike someone else who was just being an elitist and refused to do anything but tell people they must suck.

I’m out for now but I’ll be back. Hurray..OR not? lol

ArenaNet released GW2 to early, they wanted to beat WoW to the punch, and what they released was a half finished game.

It honestly needed at least 6 more Months maybe longer.

Here is the PvE build I use: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMMQNBjODbkoKwOxyyi1OQ0UwJzzUkIE9egea1+TGS3gA

You don’t really want to swap your pet unless you have to, because it resets Master’s Bond stacks. You can keep fury up pretty much non-stop with Call of the Wild and Furious Grip. Activate your F2 abilities and then use Signet of the Hunt to get some nice burst damage. Lightning Reflexes can be swapped out for QZ or pretty much anything else you like to use.

You can also take 10 points out of WS and pick up Signet Mastery in Marksmanship if you want to make more use of Signet of the Hunt.

Since most traits are focused on your pet, you can use pretty much any weapon you like. Longbow and axe/warhorn are what I generally run.

In PvP I tend to use one of two builds, depending on what I’m doing.

If I’m just trying to stay back and nail people from range I use this build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMMQNBjODbkoKwOxyyC1SQseQo+MIOD+zovAXBUdyKWGE;TsAA2CooQygkAJLSOkkItYYAx+DA

I tend to run this more often in W3, since a lot of fighting happens in/around keeps. You can also swap the marksmanship adept trait for Steady Focus if you find yourself at full endurance more often. This is a pretty straight forward “stand back and shoot” build.

Here is a build I use for small scale group combat: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMMQNBjODbkoquOvyyC1SQ0ekJJhJ2D+7oH9F4FcyKWGE;TsAA2CooQygkAJLSOkkItYYAx+DA

Shortbow works well with this build too, but I like longbow for the control. It’s more survivable and easier to control combat with this build. It requires lots of situational awareness, as it’s more focused on keep players controlled than on doing outright damage to them.

Swap pets and weapons often for the buffs. Don’t be afraid to dodge while you have vigor up.

There are some other builds I have saved that I’ve played around with and been pretty successful with, but these are the builds I’ve been goofing around with the most lately.
