Hello
I would start by saying I am far from a master of builds.
I did not read or try any builds on forums or web for my Ranger.

The simple logic would be: Power+Precision+Critical = High damage/second
This translates of course in low survivability and I am fine with this.

I am using full Berserker Exotic gear and full Ascended rings, amulet accessories and back quiver. All pieces using Power Precision and % Critical

What I expect from this kind of build is: kill an opponent fast if he/she is using same kind of gear as mine, try to evade as much as I can and hope I end up the last man standing.
Also. if he/she is using toughness/vitality gear, I expect do to moderate/low damage to them, but in the same time I do not expect to be put down in 2-3 hits.

In real combat, this is not the case, at least for my Ranger.
Of course, I get to take down opponents very very fast in some encounters, but as far as I can tell, those are only leveled up players with poor gear.
I am talking about level 80 players with armor in par with mine, at least in quality.

1vs1: I find a leveled up player with poor gear. I kill him/her fast. I am not satisfied because I know the fight was not equally balanced.

1vs1: I find a player geared as me, same level as me. The fight is interesting and one of us ends up victorious by luck or skill. Close call and close combat outcome. I like these kinds of fights and I am not upset if I loose

1vs1: I find a player geared as me, same level as me. He/she seems to be having a toughness/vitality build. I start shooting with my short bow as see I only do moderate to low damage. I need to dodge/evade a lot but can;t seem to get his/her health down. My cripples seem to have no effect, my bleeding seems useless. My opponent gets within melee distance, hit me 2-3 times and I am down, while his/her health is almost full.
I am lost for words in this scenario. Either you are built to take a hit and do low damage, or you are built to to deal high damage and die just as fast. But not both combined.

I am lucky enough to meet the last version of 1vs1 very often.
I do understand I am meant to to go down fast because of my gear choice. I really do.
But sacrificing survivability to be able to do high damage and seeing I suck at both, it is pretty disappointing.

My arrows miss their target very often.
My pet thinks he should play with my target instead of hitting it most of the time
My daze 5th skill on short bow last for the same amount of time as my character’s animation lasts to execute it.

I do feel like there is no balance between some of the classes.
Then again, I might do something wrong or do not see the big picture.

So, to cut the long story short:
I am wrong to think that using high damage/second gear should allow you to do high damage to an equally equipped player?
I am wrong to thing that using a high damage/second gear should not make me so squishy against a toughness/vitality geared player?

I am willing to learn, but I do not see the logic here.

Welcome to being a ranger… If you post your trait choices experienced players might give you some pointers on how to get more survivability.

Man. I feel sorry for you. Made the same mistake months ago by equipping my ranger with zerk gear. You’ll wanna switch to BM build or trap build.

In wvw, you are pretty much useless with zerk ranger. You suck at roaming. You provide no benefit to your group (organized or zerg). You really have no role in wvw. The most you can do is try to tag people for badges LOL.

The ranger needs healing power. Without that, dead pets will kill your DPS even with full berserker, when the pet dies—almost a guarantee in dungeons with a zerk build—your own damage isn’t enough to make up for the loss. I estimate that top ranger DPS would be a combination of rampagers stats with healing power trinkets or runes along with 20 or 30 in BM.
