Champion: Phantom, Hunter, Legionnaire, Genius
WvW rank: Diamond Colonel | Maguuma
Pre-Gw2, I was always a skirmish/assassin/sniper/traveler/wanderer lover. Every game I’ve ever played I’ve gone for the ranged classes and always enjoy them the most. Not because I’m afraid to be in harms way but because I enjoy planning my shots and observing my opponents.
Gw2 was the first game I found I loved something more than Ranger, which was Necromancer – that aside, I still love the survival specialist. My hours between the two are extremely close and I favor them pretty kitten evenly.
Lately I’ve been playing Dragon’s Dogma ranger and I’ve been thinking about things I’d love to see for the Gw2 Ranger. DD has so many great combat options that I feel could transfer quite well to Gw2 and just a few I really enjoy are:
“Dazzle Blast”, tosses fire-work type explosives on the ground to stun enemies.
“Tenfold Flurry”, fires ten arrows in a single shot. Much like Rapid Fire but not channeled. Just grab a heap of arrows from the quiver and blast them all at once.
“Comet Shot”, an intense, long ranged shot that hits like a 50 calibur bullet.
Would love a new utility skill where I could toss mini explosives for a 2second stun and mid-ranged damage.
A trait that augments bows in such a way that auto attacks can be charged for a longer range, higher damage attack and the #2 attacks become shotguns which instead of firing a fan like shortbow or a channel like longbow, fire a heap of arrows at once to knockback and deal high damage.
Not that these things would ever come to Gw2 but just felt like sharing to strike up conversation.
Anyone else always been a Ranger lover even outside Gw2? Anyone find other skills or mechanics from other games they wish could be seen in Gw2?
PS. If you haven’t played; Dragon’s Dogma is an amazing game, albeit slow at the start. Hands down my favorite combat mechanics of any game, superbly well done classes and creatures and a touching story. Check it out if you’re ever looking for something new (:
We all hate rangers here.
I bought DD: Dark Arisen as well. It’s truly an amazing game.
But the sad part is, ranger (or druid) in GW2 is more like a mage in DD. A healer buff bot.
I’ve been a hardcore archer / beast-master for 10 years, in all game types and real life included. Also was a Hunter Class Leader back in WoW for 2 years. Most of my heart is dedicated to the archetype of lone wolf (with a companion) going through the wilderness. Yup, count me in for enthusiasts.
It’s hard to say what do I want for Ranger now. Most of what I liked about archer classes is already on Ranger in GW2. But in much worse, more clunky, unreliable and bugged pattern.
If anything, I miss kill shot, tranquilizing shot and deterrence from WoW. In case someone hasn’t played WoW yet
Kill-Shot was a certain death sentence but could be used only on players below 20%.
Tranquilizing Shot didn’t deal damage but removed Magic and Enrage effects.
Deterrence made you unable to attack and gave you 100% deflect chance against all attacks and 30% damage reduction (against dots and stuff).

More often than not, I end up as a ranger/hunter in the various RPGs I play. I do love a combination of skulking/stealth and beastmastery – but I don’t think GW2 captures this feeling as well as other RPGs do. The longbow is the weapon I want to be my favorite, but by itself it is kind of lackluster. I know this is obviously because PVP and PVE balances are done together, so by buffing longbow to the point where it is fun to use just longbow would result in an unbalanced PVP. I am a huge fan of the hunter archetype, and I am really hoping the next elite spec might capture this better. Longbows, stalking, straps, poisons, pets – those some things that come to mind in my ideal ranger.
Always loved ranger type professions in any game i’ve played. I know gw2 range is not like gw1 range in any regard: but i do miss pure beastmaster (my favorite spec in any game) or interrupt ranger whose’s interrupts could mean the difference between a win or lose in pvp.
I was happy in the beginning of gw2 with ranger when you could do a pure beastmaster with the jaguar pet: with sic em, SotH, SotW and RaO/strength of the pack in stealth could one hit yaks or unsuspecting people. People didnt expect it, and it was funny. But it got changed and no worries. Interrupt ranger is fun in this game though (not as much as in gw1) with 7s stuns/dazes with boars stone/bone bash|close to 9sec fears as well with the skull hehe. with gs and shortbow it is funny.
But all in all: ranger/beastmaster at heart. and glad to hear there are more out there that like that as well
