I am not an upper echelon SPvP player who knows the ranger inside and out including the OP traits, builds, etc.

I am going based off what I see in WvWvW. In my experiences, the class seems to be limited to Axe/Warhorn + Longbow. Very few people bother with Shortbow.

It isn’t hard to understand the appeal of the class especially for those that love to compete in WvWvW. Longest range consistently in the game without kit equips, a pet (two w/ swap) for company and some slightly added utility, and easy DPS rotation.

The rotation currently seems to consist of using Bird call off warhorn-> bleed axe throw + Longbow damage ramp up ability and if they get in trouble, use guard (pet) utility skill.

The most annoying thing in fighting rangers is being a ranged class and TRYING to let your ranged attacks land on him instead of it being body blocked by his pet which he will eventually swap if/when it gets low on health. No matter how well you strafe, mouse turn to angle your attacks, and time your jumps to throw the projectile over the pet; this is annoying.

The intent of my post is not to start a nerf rant but rather what a majority of rangers do in WvWvW that I encounter. Perhaps give them other viable weapon abilities?

The pet body blocking issue has to go though. They should not be able to eat attacks passively AND use the Pet Guard utility skill. Heck, give their pets another passive ability.

Medium HP, armor, Pet and decent utiltiy skills. Pet that body blocks projectiles? Too much

This is a passive aggressive post of someone who lost against a better player who happened to be a Ranger.

This game has endless possibilities, fighting techniques, strategies, play styles that many counter one another.

People tend to fight a very conventional way, and then straight away jump to a conclusion that, (oh I used all my strengths and still lost, they must be OP) far too often, and you mate fell into that pit of silly whiners, albeit being diplomatic and respectable, so I do kudos you for that.

I get frustrated with the class ranger because I think it falls short especially in a play style I wanted to be as a Ranger. However playing with a professional guild, where anecdotes, constructive discussions and analysis are a typical daily mumble occurrence, I guarantee you, ten minutes with some of these players will put your mind at ease with Rangers and even perhaps pity them in a few ways, especially for stPVP.

T.I.L Rangers are solid, versatile, strong but are left with the short end of the stick in regards to min maxing for a certain extreme profession. As oppose to what other classes can achieve.

Came into this thread expecting something constructive, but have to agree with this poster.

Somebody lost in PvP. Rangers are a ‘newb friendly’ class for PvE but we’re not really one-dimensional, and in WvW/PvP we excel at pretty much nothing that can’t be replaced easily.
Jack-of-all …. well, Jack-of-some-trades – definitely the master of nothing.

And many of the ‘newb Rangers’ will likely either stay with the zerg in WvW, stay in PvE or roll another class as well anyway, so I see no issue that the class that has a ‘low entry fee’ so to speak.

Yep, he got butthurt. And who says people stick to longbows?…well mainly in wvwvw. I didnt see a ranger with a longbow in stpvp for quite some time now.

rangers run axe/warhorn for ranged attacks + speed increase in wvwvw, barrage from the longbow is just a great tool in the massive zerg fights.

Ranger is maybe slightly above par on everything. Not able to excel at anything, but can mix good survivability with good damage.

You had me until you said most rangers stick to longbows. My estimation is most rangers that know what they are doing are using quickening zephyr+shortbow. Longbow is very situational, and should really only be brought out for defending a tower/keep with the aoe, or trying to clear the walls of a tower/keep with the aoe.

Most classes are complaining about the exact same things that this thread is complaining about. Necros are complaining that they have a tiny number of viable builds, guardians are complaining that they have no real way to root and get kited too easily, Elementalists are complaining that they are too fragile, engineers complaining about flamethrower and that grenades is one of the only real viable specs, thieves and warriors shouldn’t really be complaining about anything. You get the point.

The pet is meant to block projectiles so you are forced to deal with it, as the pet is a big part of the Ranger. If you could shot through the pet, everyone would just ignore it, and get dealt a lot of damage in return. But it’s not really a problem at all, if you just use control skills like chill or knockback to get rid of the pet, and you remember to always move. Also; AoE attacks.

The Ranger has some great weapons. The problem is that everyone only want to use the absolute best damaging weapons, and don’t really care about other uses that weapons can have. The greatsword is a good example of this. It has the Rangers best traveling skill (Swoop) and also has an interrupt skill and a block. These are some amazing qualities for a second hand weapon, even if the damage is a little on the low side.

I actually have yet to lose to a ranger. I came close once but I prevailed. Do you really think that someone who knows ranger’s DPS rotation would lose to a majority of them?

All I can say is that I haven’t had a problem with this (and I’m not using piercing), since I’m always moving around and the pet is also moving around with my opponent. But I think it’s strange that you think this is an issue, when you say you can kill Rangers without any problem. A problem that only exists in theory, is not a problem at all.

Of course you haven’t. An extremely skilled player like you would never lose, even against something overpowered. It’s not like you’re frustrated by an embarrassing loss or anything.

You’re just doing a public service by going to the official forum for a class that never gives you any trouble in PvP and suggesting that they’re overpowered. Because you have a passion for objective analysis of game design and want to help out all the poor scrubs out there who don’t have your ability to just always outplay your opponent.

That said, if you guys are just happy with your simple DPS rotation … hats off to you.

The intent of my OP was to discuss pet body blocking → collision with projectiles. I understand the game tries to be that of an action combat in some ways but this an issue. An issue that is not solely tied to Ranger only.
