Ranger damage
I use my pet for utility only. Usually in the form of Immobilizes and Fear. I do just fine.
You can spec for birds and cats to be really heavy hitters, though.
Rangers do have slightly less damage than other classes built the same way if you don’t factor in the pet, but if you use the pet correctly, you can bring your DPS up to that of a zerker warrior in some situations, as well as bringing lots of utility.
Straight up – If you want the pet to do damage, DO NOT USE THE BEAR. It’s a meatshield, no more, no less, and offers no actual damage or conditions. If you want a tanky pet, I’d reccomend a wolf in place of a bear, for their more condition based brawling power. As for damage pets, cats and birds take the cake, with drakes being around the third best for dps.
Overall, you can’t ignore the pet – it’s an exention of you, and as such, has a portion of your DPS. Managed correctly, the pet offers alot of damage and can be an asset to an entire team. You can still do damage without it, but proper pet management is essential to maximise your DPS.
Ok, Thank you. I’ll consider leveling up a hunter, but I just wanted to clear that up.
ranger deal nice damage, the problem is.
you need a good group, with nice buffing group you deal more dmg than warris

I’m sorry but no.
Ranger damage sucks if you’re not factoring the pet in plain and simple. It isn’t “a bit less” it’s incredibly noticeable. On top of this your pet is controlled by a rather unreliable AI that, many times, simply cannot be worked around.
Second, wolfs (canines) are not tanky condition power brawlers. I have no idea what he is talking about at that point. The best way to look at pets is this;
- Bears: Meatshields. Sometimes useful Active skills but there’s generally always a better choice.
- Drakes: Solid, all around pets often dealing decent condition damage through the AoE active skills they can use while being sturdy enough to take more than a few hits.
- Canines: Very balanced pet you can expect to take a couple hits, deal decent damage, and control. Usually used for the cripple and Kockdown.
- Felines: Damage. Will die fast. Will kill fast.
- Birds: See above.
- Boars: No.
- Spider: Ranged canines. Useful for ranged Immob and AoE poison. Will very rarely actually stay at range though. Often found right up there in melee range taking those hits it shouldn’t be.
- Devourer: Sadly, No.
- Moa: Red moa for nice fury. Rarely worth using any other.
Invest a few points into Beatmastery during general PvE and play smart. You’ll love your pet. WvW is a completely different story but that’s a whole other can of worms.
(If you don’t really want to deal with the pet so much I’d suggest taking a Drake or two with like 15 points invested into Beastmastery. This gives you F2 recharge and Swap recharge, or if you prefer just 10 and take Master’s Bond and don’t swap. They’ll take the hits and deal some decent damage, especially if you start stacking might/fury on them.)
It’s popular to hate Bears these days, but no other pet does a better job at staying alive for things like Protect Me , Signet of Renewal and Empathic Bond (trait). So it has its uses, but generally there is no need to pick it unless you pair it with such utilities.
