Ranger feeling
Sniper referrers to guns we cant use them..
what were you disappointed by?
damage? well our pet has alot of our damage.. maybe try a class with a rifle?
Yeah, a modern “sniper” is usually someone with a rifle, but in game-speak it also means anyone who can deal good single-target dps at range. You can snipe with bows in games just fine.
But to answer your question Morty, no, the GW2 Ranger is not a sniping class.
I troll because I care
instead of feeling like a sniper.. with a bow i feel like i have semi automatic
with QZ and rapid fire
cant really speak much for WvW but in spvp and tpvp i do pretty well with a longbow
FPS-like Sniper gameplay is sort of lacking in this game. Despite the fact most PvP maps have excellent natural and obviously planned perching locations, I can’t really say I’ve come across any class that can make much gameplay out of it.
This is all subjective, but. I’ve felt Warrior has the big satisfying numbers, but nothing too spectacular on the mobility front and no real incentive to dash away from a perch given how well they handle brawling. Thieves have the frailty incentive and mobility, but given how much of them is geared towards skirmishing there’s less reward for perching in the first place. Ranger has the frailty incentive, the mobility, and the pet works well with perching gameplay, but the longbow mechanics have too much of the damage potential wrapped up in the vulnerability condition and too much focus on channeling to have much of an element of surprise (or much of a reward for surprising).
Nah I feel more like having artillery support (Barrage) and an assault rifle(Rapid Fire). Not a bad feel. I love the 1500 range too much to use something other than longbow. To get any damage out of it I have to go full berserker glasscannon tho.
Yay, another daoc veteran =D
I’ve also played hunter/ranger/scout in daoc for several years (actually my first char was a Norse Hunter in 2001), but I’m afraid that stealthing&sniping feeling won’t be anywhere like that, in this game
I like the Ranger though for what it is, and so far its my favourite (PVE) class =)
Actually sniping is refered too as shooting accurately at long distances, bows were the first sniping weapons, then guns came into play. Bows, especially around this medieval set era were incredibly deadly, just not in gw2. Im with you OP, I felt underwhelmed with my ranger, I wanted to snipe with a longbow, and sadly I gotta play rifle warrior or wintersday scout to get that fix. While longbowmen or archers of their respective eras were never called snipers, they were called marksmen, which is essentially another word for sniper.
I made a thread about how Id like them to change longbow, I know they wont and Im already planning on moving on to a game that showed very good archer classes so far, but its some good ideas from myself and others, check it out. Hopefully anet gets their act together tho. We should be precision shooters from long range and have skills like an aimed shot, not rapid fire or a charge up shot like snipers shot, not long ranged shot that gets weaker the closer the enemy gets….makes sense right?
We’re not snipers in WvW, we’re mobile artillery as someone above said. The Longbow absolutely shines from on top of a wall or from the outside picking guys off of the top of the wall. No, we can’t burst people down using it like an FPS sniper can, but QZ+Rapid Fire + using Guard to send your pet down off the wall can drop an enemy from farther out than anyone can retaliate (except for siege weapons).
Longbow + Jaguar/Wolf + Guard + QZ is very nearly the ultimate wall defender.
Ex DaoC Scout also.
No, GW2 Ranger is nothing like the DaoC Scout.
“Sniping” in GW2 should really be called tickling. You only kill someone when they are already injured and distracted by someone else. If you can actually find a 1 on 1, and your target feels they might lose, they just run away. If you can keep up, it takes forever to take them down.
Daoc was all about positioning, patience and target selection. Do it all right and you got yourslef a kill. gW2 your target can just strafe side to side = rarely hit them.
Obviously stealth helped a lot to allow yourself to get away from the zergs and not get runover while you wait for a good target …IE sniping

Yes thats perfect, 4 skills to kill 1 person, or play rifle warrior press 1 button, kill 1+ person depending on if they are lined up, and still have the same range. Yes arrows travel further than bullets but what if you dont bring guard? I mean then your pet just sits there, although I admit if I was shooting from the top of castle wall Id get rid of lightning reflexes and use guard because it lets pets scale walls. However if that pet dies to an aoe or the person starts targeting the pet like a smart player, you just lost your pet, or have to switch out and then guard was useless.
