So, I love my Ranger despite the clear issues and will continue to use her. But I do want to level at least one other class to 80, problem is I’m having a hell of a time deciding on what class.

As Rangers that love well… Rangers. What other classes have you been able to enjoy most? I have tried all the casters and hate them, I also hated the Guardian. It seems to me that a Warrior might offer work out, I just want something as good at solo PvE as my Ranger.

Might be helpful if you post what you like about the Ranger, and whether you want something more the same or as different as possible for variety.

You said you hated all the casters and fair enough. But my 2nd character is/will be a Necro, albeit not a typical build. I’m planning to stack as much power/tough/vit as possible and run it with a dagger/offhand and mostly spectral skills and/or wells. The sPvP results are pretty hilarious, since people get taken aback by a necro who runs in and cracks heads and also has access to snares. Watching warriors and guardians who thought they’d be better off close to me was priceless.

I made a thief. Level’d to 80. Loved the thief, but I hated soloing stuff in PvE and doing dungeons. So I only use my thief for WvW, and my ranger for everything else.

I disagree. I have leveled my Ranger to 80 a while ago and although I still play him I have found Elementalist to be very engaging and when played correctly very active and sturdy, like a ranger.

Other than that I would say try Necro. A lot of what I like about Ranger is having the pet around (I find that an extra body is great in pve). Eles have pets based on attunement and Necro clearly has plenty of extra bodies (their playstyle is not as active though). Good Luck.

I can’t stand playing as an Elementalist. Beyond the one FotM build there is almost zero variation for PvP. For PvE it’s just boring (in my opinion). I could just never get into it.

I play an unorthodox Necro that uses dagger/warhorn and it’s really, really fun. Not as fun as my Ranger, but a close second for PvP. In PvE I just don’t really find Necro to be very engaging.

[Edit: For the record, I don’t really enjoy the rotational play style, so any profession that has builds that focus on executing the right skills in the right order to maximize your effectiveness are less appealing to me. I like a more fluid play style where you don’t have to perform every single ability at the exact right moment in the exact right order. If it can be done with a macro, I don’t really see the point. I like more fluid game play where you have to choose which ability to use depending on the situation.]

Are you talking to me? I don’t lose to Thieves. Thanks for your concern though.

I’ve got 90 something games played on the Thief profession. It’s a one trick pony profession. It’s boring, not very much fun, and only good for stomping new players and bad players.

Besides ranger I have a lvl 80 necro and warrior. I find necro interesting to play, but like ranger it has issues, not least having uncontrollable pets. Anyway you said you didn’t like any of the casters. I play my warrior in dungeons and when I want to see big numbers, although the only self-made combo field is longbow F1 so it might feel dull for soloing. While levelling I played it in a duo with an ele.

Thief I tried, but didn’t enjoy it that much for pve. Now I’m trying engineer and it’s growing on me. You could give that a go.

Thats the thing right there, I need a class that does not use a rotation every fight. I need something that does something different depending in what is going on, much like my dual bow Ranger does.

I should have also mentioned I prefer 2-handed weapons as well like bows and greatswords and hammers and the like.

I would not call an effective elementalist play style a rotation. Much like the Ranger and especially the engineer, the ele usually has the right tool at any given time and can access it with ease for the most effective use. If you are playing ele just to spam cool downs no wonder you had no fun. I get a feeling we are just going to disagree on this one.

Probably. I tried to play an Elementalist “tactically” by using abilities when necessary, but there really aren’t that many. For the most part it was following a routine. Start in X element, use the following abilities, swap to element Y, use the following abilities, swap to element Z, use the following abilities. Roll around until element X is off CD. Rinse and repeat.

It’s just not that much fun to me.

I’d say Warrior.

I’ve played an “archer” main in just about every MMO since the dawn of time, but sadly in this one I just feel kittened on my Ranger. If you use the right weapons (Greatsword and Rifle or Longbow depending on what you’re doing), playing a Warrior can feel almost exactly like playing a Ranger, just without the poorly implemented pet.

In trade, you get huge reliable damage, and armor coupled with great health regeneration. I tried it, I loved it. I miss Healing Spring quite a bit, but I feel so much more capable and in control of the field soloing in Orr it’s… well, pretty sad, really.

Also, there’s no real “rotation” to anything; all your abilities are pretty reactive. like I mentioned, I made my Warrior because so much of playing my Ranger was frustrating rather than fun (seriously, it’s 2012… THIS is pet functionality and control I’m supposed to be happy with? Please.) – and it turned out that my Warrior did all the stuff my Ranger did,, mostly in the WAY my Ranger did, or was supposed to – only better.

I tried to play a warrior, but I guess I have never really realized how much better combo fields make combat. Yeah, warriors have a couple, but nothing compared to the many of a ranger. With a combo field, you get awesome damage and such dynamic combat as-well. Using leaps and projectiles and spins… compared to that, Warrior combat just feels so Dry.

I’ve never tried the Eng, or Ele. But I guess I’ll head over to the Eng forums and take a look they do sound interesting.

Tried a Necro, which is the type of class I have played in the past. Hated the Asura zone though so it slowed my leveling.

Tried a Guardian. Seems like a great class but I have never been a full melee person.

Currently on an Ele. I really like the fact that they have good mobility. WvW maps seem really large when you are on a Ranger.

I leveled a thief to 30 in PvE but it was so boring and hard (compared to ranger) soloing that I decided to level her to 80 at WvW. And it’s cool cuz I learned a few things about thieves that now help me while fighting against them ^^

I’m kinda partial to my guardian and engineer. Running around in a circle with bombs on my engy still makes me giggle like i did with psychic distraction on my mesmer in GW1.
